While the removable disc drive might over complicate the product line, it's cool that years down the line, there will be plenty of easily replaceable, first-party OEM parts if the disc drives start failing. You just buy a new drive and pop it in. No screws, no ribbon cables. Pretty neat. *Edit* I know that the drive requires internet connection. My hope is that Sony uses software patches to allow people to replace them. The online connectivity is a piracy measure that Sony had to implement because of regulations. Every console made after 2005 will eventually be e-waste when they shut down their servers, but it will be a long time before the PS5 reaches that point.

18:47 It's worth noting that the PS3 had it's first node shrink from 90nm to 65nm during the FAT model then the 65nm to 40nm happened within the slim's cycle, so a node shrink never happened in the transition from Fat->Slim or Slim->Super Slim and the PS2 had multiple node shrinks in it's FAT model phase as well.

Unfortunately it looks like they're still going to need regular maintenance, and often. I kind of wish Sony inferred with their designs that you should lay the console down flat. At least once a week I have to service a PS5 due to overheating, most of the time the top half (area that has less conductive material and more heat when standing upright) of the chip is covered in oxidation and is effectively repelling all that liquid metal off of the mating surface.

So my feelings about it are exactly as they were when I first heard about it which is that if you already have a PS5 like myself then there's no reason to upgrade BUT if you don't yet have a PS5 and are in the market for one then there's no reason NOT to get this slimmer model as it's small, has an extra USB port, and a bit more storage while utilizing the same amount of power for identical performance. Also, unless you come across a sale on the all digital model I am still of the opinion that you should go for the disk-based version despite now being able to upgrade to a disk in the future because the price difference between the two is negligible for the added benefit of being able to pick up physical discs that often go on sale from retailers way below their price on the PlayStation store.

The only change the Slim brings in regards to the USB ports is the front USB ports are now both USB-C with one being a 10Gbps port and the other a "High Speed" port according to Sony. This means that the USB ports are all the same speed as the original PS5 but the only difference is the USB-A port on the front has been replaced by a USB-C port at the same speed.

Sounds like a job for GamersNexus with their thermal probe setup. (Consoles are notoriously hard to do proper thermal testing for, as none of the temperatures are exposed to the user in any way and you basically have to take the whole thing apart, place thermal probes while not ruining the original thermal material and then put it back together and stress test it.)
@allansolano5587 Жыл бұрын
Im pretty sure there are not gonna be that much difference because the heatsink looks exactly the same as the cfi 1200 og model and that has the same node and the same power consumption im pretty sure the smaller case wont do much
@SurgStriker Жыл бұрын
Consoles aren't that hard, if you have the right tools. At least some aren't, i got to do a little beta testing on one that had access to dev tools and it included a massive array of temperature data. So some console manufacturers actually care enough to put a lot of temp sensors across a lot of nodes, just a matter of if external testing groups can get access to the software. Kind of like how PCs can have a lot more nodes than you realize, like using some apps that pull up a dozen different temps that apparently are built in, but without access unless you download the right programs to access it all (or, i think some might have access through BIOS but that's not particularly useful for stress testing)

Wasn't the original PS5 heavily marketed around its custom 6 channel Storage Controller? Which was also the reason for its weird 825GB capacity. I only see 4 Packages now, 256GB each for 1TB in total, which means it is using less channels from the controller, which implies that parallel throughput of the system would be lower unless the controller is more efficient now per channel of NAND connected to it. Can you guys run a Speed Test on the Internal Storage to see if there's any different?
@notlekrut Жыл бұрын
Heavily marketed? Depends. That was a small detail in the Road to PS5, barely a marketed feature. It was just a single part of its specs and probably not that important. Most of the custom stuff is on the actual controller, like hardware decompression. And I imagine there’s still the 6 levels of priority they mentioned. Oh, and the PS5 actually has a 12 channel interface, not 6, although I’m not sure how that translates to the nand chips
@jakub7244 Жыл бұрын
They lie in marketing a lot
@0xybelis Жыл бұрын

@Sevicify Жыл бұрын
The number of channels doesn't necessarily equal the number of NAND packages or dies within, and less chips also doesn't necessarily mean a decrease in channels. For reference modern drives commonly have 8 channels while using 2 NAND packages, so Sony could very well keep 12 channels (it's 12 not 6) despite decreasing down to 4 packages in the Slim which likely each have four 512 Gbit dies. Also fewer channels wouldn't necessarily mean lower throughput, the speed of the channels matters.

On the USB ports, Linus actually is a bit wrong - it's actually the same speeds on all ports as the previous OG PS5, they've just changed the front USB-A to USB-C. - Both back USB-A ports are 10 Gbit. - One of the front USB-C - the one replacing the USB-A - is limited to USB 2.0 speeds (480 Mbit/s) and is basically only for charging controllers/peripherals. (I guess you can use it for USB headsets as well as those typically only need USB 2.0 speeds.) - The other USB-C is 10 Gbit and is to be used for the PSVR2 (but can be used for charging etc. as well, of course). It could cause some confusion if new users try to plug their PSVR2 into the wrong front port and it doesn't work and don't understand why.
