While the removable disc drive might over complicate the product line, it's cool that years down the line, there will be plenty of easily replaceable, first-party OEM parts if the disc drives start failing. You just buy a new drive and pop it in. No screws, no ribbon cables. Pretty neat. *Edit* I know that the drive requires internet connection. My hope is that Sony uses software patches to allow people to replace them. The online connectivity is a piracy measure that Sony had to implement because of regulations. Every console made after 2005 will eventually be e-waste when they shut down their servers, but it will be a long time before the PS5 reaches that point.

if they're new, yeah but i think if you want to buy used it wouldn't work right? cause you have to register to your ps5 and all and i say buy used because sony won't be making these forever and you might want to fix your ps5 at a time where it's either too expensive to buy new or literally impossible

18:47 It's worth noting that the PS3 had it's first node shrink from 90nm to 65nm during the FAT model then the 65nm to 40nm happened within the slim's cycle, so a node shrink never happened in the transition from Fat->Slim or Slim->Super Slim and the PS2 had multiple node shrinks in it's FAT model phase as well.

I can't tell you how many times I've accidentally ejected to this or accidentally put it in sleep mode. This is a major big welcome in my opinion that will probably get overlooked, but I'm glad that line is called it out. And I must say that overall the system looks a little bit more appealing to me being smaller. I'm probably going to wait off on the pro model, assuming that happens. But it's hard to argue that they made the right decisions when it comes to the design on this thing.

@VellahTV
@VellahTV Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately it looks like they're still going to need regular maintenance, and often. I kind of wish Sony inferred with their designs that you should lay the console down flat. At least once a week I have to service a PS5 due to overheating, most of the time the top half (area that has less conductive material and more heat when standing upright) of the chip is covered in oxidation and is effectively repelling all that liquid metal off of the mating surface.
@flimermithrandir

@@VellahTV Also, while not an Issue for now, the other Thermal Pads (or whatever its called) for VRAM, NAND... other Chips might dry out over Time as well. I dont know exactly how long this will take and i assume Sony uses (very) good Components there to counter Issues but i also assume if you use your PS5 daily over longer Times when you are also living in a hot Area... this will make Issues at some Time in the Future regardless. It would be nice if you could open and maintain it more easily imo. It seems also overkill that they use SO many Screws. But i am no Expert.

Point is a Console is just different than a PC while you might just change the Thermalpast easy on the CPU or change the GPU anyways and never have that Issue to begin with (the other Guy buying it might run into Problems though). Anyways, the Point is that a Console is used Way longer. Maybe even in 30 Years, who knows, and it would be nice to not have to unscrew 234 Screws just to get to the Thermalpads. 6:00 Regarding the USB ports, Sony's own site says the original/launch PS5 has three 10Gbps ports (1x USB-C on the front and 2x USB-A on the back) and the front USB-A port is "High Speed" USB (they don't specify the speed but "High Speed" refers to USB 2 or 480Mbps) and not two 5Gbps and two 10Gbps as mentioned in the video. The only change the Slim brings in regards to the USB ports is the front USB ports are now both USB-C with one being a 10Gbps port and the other a "High Speed" port according to Sony. This means that the USB ports are all the same speed as the original PS5 but the only difference is the USB-A port on the front has been replaced by a USB-C port at the same speed.

The acoustic measurements on the plane were nice (I would recommend a tinnier angular spacing to make the graph less choppy). However, because sound can be emitted in all directions, this result doesn't mean that the total acoustic energy radiated by both devices is the same. Measuring total acoustic power will give you that information. Is a more tedious measurement to do, but it does not require an acoustic chamber 🙌🏻

Because of the die shrinks so thermal and power draw was better but this time they did the shrink and improve the thermals on the cfi 1200 models so thats why you dont see much of a change basically anyone with a cfi 1200 or a slim will have a better console overall compared to the first buyers in 2020 or 2021/2022 that got the cfi 1100 that has the worse thermals

Sounds like a job for GamersNexus with their thermal probe setup. (Consoles are notoriously hard to do proper thermal testing for, as none of the temperatures are exposed to the user in any way and you basically have to take the whole thing apart, place thermal probes while not ruining the original thermal material and then put it back together and stress test it.)

Consoles aren't that hard, if you have the right tools. At least some aren't, i got to do a little beta testing on one that had access to dev tools and it included a massive array of temperature data. So some console manufacturers actually care enough to put a lot of temp sensors across a lot of nodes, just a matter of if external testing groups can get access to the software. Kind of like how PCs can have a lot more nodes than you realize, like using some apps that pull up a dozen different temps that apparently are built in, but without access unless you download the right programs to access it all (or, i think some might have access through BIOS but that's not particularly useful for stress testing)

Honestly, everything here is pretty much what I expected. Given that the price of the console hasn't really gone down I figured that it would at its core still be utilizing the same chip. So my feelings about it are exactly as they were when I first heard about it which is that if you already have a PS5 like myself then there's no reason to upgrade BUT if you don't yet have a PS5 and are in the market for one then there's no reason NOT to get this slimmer model as it's small, has an extra USB port, and a bit more storage while utilizing the same amount of power for identical performance. Also, unless you come across a sale on the all digital model I am still of the opinion that you should go for the disk-based version despite now being able to upgrade to a disk in the future because the price difference between the two is negligible for the added benefit of being able to pick up physical discs that often go on sale from retailers way below their price on the PlayStation store.

On the USB ports, Linus actually is a bit wrong - it's actually the same speeds on all ports as the previous OG PS5, they've just changed the front USB-A to USB-C. - Both back USB-A ports are 10 Gbit. - One of the front USB-C - the one replacing the USB-A - is limited to USB 2.0 speeds (480 Mbit/s) and is basically only for charging controllers/peripherals. (I guess you can use it for USB headsets as well as those typically only need USB 2.0 speeds.) - The other USB-C is 10 Gbit and is to be used for the PSVR2 (but can be used for charging etc. as well, of course). It could cause some confusion if new users try to plug their PSVR2 into the wrong front port and it doesn't work and don't understand why.

Wasn't the original PS5 heavily marketed around its custom 6 channel Storage Controller? Which was also the reason for its weird 825GB capacity. I only see 4 Packages now, 256GB each for 1TB in total, which means it is using less channels from the controller, which implies that parallel throughput of the system would be lower unless the controller is more efficient now per channel of NAND connected to it. Can you guys run a Speed Test on the Internal Storage to see if there's any different?
@notlekrut
@notlekrut Жыл бұрын
Heavily marketed? Depends. That was a small detail in the Road to PS5, barely a marketed feature. It was just a single part of its specs and probably not that important. Most of the custom stuff is on the actual controller, like hardware decompression. And I imagine there’s still the 6 levels of priority they mentioned. Oh, and the PS5 actually has a 12 channel interface, not 6, although I’m not sure how that translates to the nand chips

The number of channels doesn't necessarily equal the number of NAND packages or dies within, and less chips also doesn't necessarily mean a decrease in channels. For reference modern drives commonly have 8 channels while using 2 NAND packages, so Sony could very well keep 12 channels (it's 12 not 6) despite decreasing down to 4 packages in the Slim which likely each have four 512 Gbit dies. Also fewer channels wouldn't necessarily mean lower throughput, the speed of the channels matters.

@@PhyrexJ I hadn't heard much about the controversy or been in the loop much so I thought they removed the disk drive or something. This is the same thing as the PS5 but better and smaller than I expected a slim version to be. So yes it's more impressive than I thought it would be.

However, in long run, this console is not good for future retrogaming because Sony will shutdown their cloud service long before all the optical drives fail. As a result, you cannot combine a working drive with a working motherboard because Sony maintained cloud service is required to accomplish that. Hopefully none of the games for this console are worth retrogaming in the future.

@@MikkoRantalainen While not ideal unfortunately it's now the world we live in, still with luck unless I'm misunderstanding something, there is a fair chance that once that point is reached either Sony changes the firmware so that the online requirement is no longer needed or 3rd party solutions are available to cater for those users.

@@raka1996 If Sony went the here with the same technique they use in their Android phones, real cryptography with secret device specific key stored in TPM (or equivalent) chip, there's little to no hope to ever fix the problem without Sony's help. For a single device, you could put the TPM chip under electron microscope to extract the device specific secret but that scales really poorly. You'll end up with similar crap that 3rd party repair services have to deal with Apple devices nowadays: swap individual chips to avoid the serial numbers from changing. This obviously totally voids the idea of easy drive replacement. And considering how poorly they support their existing Android hardware, I have very little hope for Sony ever releasing a firmware update to allow part swaps when Sony shuts down the cloud service.

The ssd thing has been done before. *With the ps3.* At least with the super slim ps3, you could slide its side off and you had a completely empty full PC HDD sized sata port, no need for screws even
@Icefumy

I used that with an sata extention cable, powering an big HDD instead of the smaller laptop drive they came with. Even modded an old external case to keep the drive in, for safety. I do remember it had a sizelimit though, but it also could've been an incompatibility with the drive brand, somehow.

One thing they could've changed is make the OS SSD not be soldered. In case one chip module is to fail it would be much easier to replace an SSD and not to desolder and resolder the chip back on the board, well at least Xbox got that right.

Glad to see a full teardown of the PS5 slim. I have no plans on purchasing one anytime in the near future, but it's good to know it'll be the go-to if I gift a PS5 to a friend and/or family member who wants one the future. I do wish the included disk drive came with both the cover to run it with and w/o the disk drive (because it makes no sense to me to buy the disk drive-less version, only to buy one later), but I'm sure a company like Dbrand will just give you the option via their darkplates in the future anyway to just buy just that one plate separately.

It's seriously cool they can pack that much in such a "small" package. I mean honestly with the size of modern consoles you might as well get a mini itx build, but those are more expensive if you spec them up. So it's fair enough. The "you need connection to the server or it's a brick" trend worries me though =l

I was annoyed that they removed the stand from the package and kept the same price but now I'm doubting; it might be actually better to get the Slim. They actually made it better. Not going down "in nm" is fine, we are already at 6 nm, that's "huge". I'm kind of put off by the power draw, I admit I hadn't looked at it for the PS5, the whole point of me having consoles now that exclusives do also come to PC was lower power draw on long play sessions (every weekend multiplayer with friends).

A few points of concern: 1) How it is smaller with smaller fan, dramatically reduced heatsink yet draws the same power and heat? 2) Did the SSD get a downgrade? I can see less NAND chips but are they the same quality TLC type NAND flash or did they cheapen out with the less reliable and shorter lifespan QLC type NAND? 3) Why does it draw the same power with the game in suspend mode? 4) What was the point of splitting both side panels and how will this affect replacement panels going forward, like, will they offer two versions or ignore "thicc" PS5 models when new ones arrive?
@zanzabar4ky7
@zanzabar4ky7 Жыл бұрын
1) That is a similar sized heat sync and not a much smaller fan. Blower fans down scale. 2) All nand is QLC or PLC now. Being able to run in that mode doe not mean it is being used that way. The controllers have have huge upgrades since the ps5 came out 3) Game as are not suspended unless you turn it off. They are paused and stay in CPU./Ram unless you launch something else. 4) shouldn't matter. It changes less parts if you get the disk drive.
