Even if you're overheating and it's dust, I recommend replacing the thermal paste anyways. It's better to completely disassemble the console for a more thorough cleaning imo and it can't hurt to have fresh paste. I've run into issues with two old original ps4s overheating and a slim I own that won't turn on. Both OG consoles were fixed with paste. Cleaning helped. But paste fixed it completely. Still haven't fixed the slim. Oh well. I'm pretty sure that one has a faulty power supply.

Another 0.01% report at here. It is the thermal paste PLUS dust in the cooler. My PS4 fan was super loud, AFAIK, there are 4 levels, Lv4 is the loudest. Basically, my PS4 fan stay at around 2 just at the dashboard, and keep at level 4 fan when enter any game. It was sooooooo annoying that makes me don't even want to touch my PS4. And few days ago, I decided to fix it. I want to re-paste it, but because of not enough time, so I ended up only open it, took out the transformer, used the duster to blow all the dust away. And re-assembly the console. The situation improved, but not really "fixed". The fan stay a Lv1 at dashboard. And go to around 3 after 10-15min of gaming. Today, I have more time, and decided to give the thermal paste a try. So, I opened it up again. I saw the thermal paste, it is NOT dried yet, and doesn't looks too bad, I will say that's typical factory standard. Therefore, I believe it won't help. However, since I've already opened it up. So I gave it a deep clean and then I re-apply some AS5 on it. I just use the most idiot proof method. Apply some paste, put it back on the heatsink, pull it out, check if the paste is enough. In my case, the paste can't cover the 4 CPU's corners, so I add some more paste at the conners, and re-check if that's enough again. I know someone will say that's the worst thing to do, because I introduce the air bubble in the thermal paste. However, in my own experience, it's the safest way to do it (at least for AS5). If too much paste, suck the extra paste away. If not enough, add more. And the result always good (even may not be the best). After that, I re-asymbly the PS4. Guess what? The fan now always stay at Lv1 or 2. I am not sure if it does actually go to stage 2, because both Lv1 and Lv2 are quite quiet. Hard to judge in normal situation. So, I can confirm that it's not just the dust. Even the thermal paste is not dried and did correctly apply (in the factory standard). Replace it by AS5 still able to completely fix the fan noise. Last but not least, for info, I am from Hong Kong, hot and humid. So, I can confirm that with proper thermal paste, the original PS4 cooling system can work very very well.
@ArtisChronicles7 жыл бұрын
this is pretty simple. They use generic stuff with has a pretty low thermal conductivity. Even AS5 doesn't have the highest conductivity, but it's very reliable and very consistent. AS5 has a thermal conductivity of 8.9 W/mk and the generic stuff will be much lower than that. So yeah, you did your PS4 good by applying the AS5. I like AS5 as well, just a pain for me to clean up because I use 99% Isopropyl alcohol.

Learned this the hard way. Thermal paste does definitely help with a loud fan/ overheating issues, but be very careful when screwing in the component that's right by the thermal pads and looks like a circle with two curved "blades" sticking out of it. If you put it in the wrong way or upside down it doesn't do its job of holding the heat sink and the chip together, so your thermal paste will be a lot less effective. If you put it in the wrong way it can also damage your thermal pads as it's right next to them, though this isn't as troublesome because a torn up thermal pad still does it's job.

I got a used PS4, who knows how old, was really loud so I did replace it, cleaned everything with a dust blower and it got a bit quieter. After getting it out of the shelf and put it upright on a table, it actually made a much bigger difference in terms of fan volume. Glad I ruled out the thermal paste (which was kinda old and sticky) but noticing that the top and bottom (or sides, if it's upright) of the PS4 heat up considerably and putting it on top of a table or shelf while having good airflow around (closer to the door of the room) helped much more. Guess it also depends a bit on luck because of silicon lottery and all that stuff. Some chips won't become as hot as others, it's just the nature of the material and the manufacturing process.

It is a shame that the video is entitled "The PS4 Thermal Paste is Not The Problem!" but in the comments most of the fixes for the issues people have is to replace the thermal paste! otherwise good explanation in the video.
@Tronicsfix8 жыл бұрын
+Myxo Rides Ya...that's because most people in the comments have overheating problems...which is the one of the things that I clearly state in the video that can be helped by replacing the thermal paste.
@MyxoRides8 жыл бұрын
So it is the problem :-)
@Tronicsfix8 жыл бұрын
+Myxo Rides Yes, it can be the problem IF your PS4 is overheating...the problem that this video is addressing is that many people think that other random things are caused by bad thermal paste...like when the PS4 turns on then back off, doesn't display on the TV, has and HDMI port problem, etc. The point is that people think everything is caused by the thermal paste when the only thing that might be caused by bad thermal paste is overheating. It's titled as it is to grab attention and hopefully help people see that the problem they are having is likely not caused by bad thermal paste UNLESS it's overheating.
@MyxoRides8 жыл бұрын
It did grab attention, it was a good video nonetheless. I often find online the opposite is true and people are very against replacing the thermal paste - when I had the 'jet engine' sound issue with my PS4 I did a lot of reading about it and there was a lot of negativity even though it does make a massive difference to the fan noise on the older models. I did it and it was like night and day.
@Tronicsfix8 жыл бұрын
+Myxo Rides Wow, interesting...it seems like replacing thermal paste is the first thing people want to do when they get a new console! It seems that some of the older models are starting to have more problems overheating as they age. The thermal paste that Sony uses works fine...for a while, but once it gets too dried out it seems to really start causing overheating problems. Sounds like yours was a great example! Glad you got it fixed.
@YouNameItGaming5 жыл бұрын
as I usually say to people regarding console issues, if your fans getting loud and your console gets really warm in certain spots? then a good cleaning and replacing the crap original thermal compound will likely make your machine feel a heap better, and it'll reward you by running cooler, and much quieter. however, if you're having issues with it turning itself off, black screening etc, well, it's goose is probably cooked, and the subpar thermal compound is the least of your worries. great video as always!

I cracked open my PS4 Pro yesterday and replaced the thermal paste and thermal pads and what a difference it made. Before it would get pretty loud during the cut scenes in Spider-Man and when I still played Modern Warfare it would get absolutely ridiculously loud when sitting in a lobby. I played a solid 8-9 hours straight last night and I did not hear the fan ramp up once and the loudest thing was the disc drive spinning up when starting the game. I'm sure the pads made a bigger difference than the paste as the pads themselves were barely big enough to cover half the chip and were very thin. Surprisingly the fan itself wasn't dirty at all, as well as the heat sink. So dust wasn't the issue.

I then took a look inside the chip while I was disassembling my ps4 to look at the thermal paste, no idea as to how a paste should look inside but I did notice right away that it was dried out and spewed to the edge and all around the cpu. So, I put it all back together after getting out most of the dust. My ps4 when turned on began to overheat and create this loud noise as the fan was being overworked trying to cool things off. I took what thermal paste was around the cpu, it was almost like this grey playdoh like substance. After I had done this the fan wasnt loud anymore or heating up and turning off. My only assumption is that the thermal paste had gone bad. The only reason why I had reused the thermal paste was for a quick fix. Is it safe to assume that I need new thermal paste? Saying that the heat sink keeps the processor cool is a bit misleading. The processor will generate heat, no matter what. The heat sink is there to allow for better dispersal of that heat. The heat sink is NOT capable of actively cooling the processor, though. Even if you were to pump freezing cold air through it, it wouldn’t cool the processor - it would just keep the heat at a minimum on the heat sink itself. The only way to keep a processor “cold” is to put some kind of active system on the processor, such as a liquid coolant (not liquid cooling, that’s different) such as liquid nitrogen, or some kind of enclosed loop that pumps coolant over the chip, much like an air conditioner’s Freon.

For those looking to identify and solve thermal issues to consumer electronics here are my findings: - thicker thermal paste is used to prevent thermal pumping. Thermal pumping is caused by higher tolerances in assembly to prevent damage to the apu aka not much pressure is applied to apu with heat sink since a machine screws down the torque. All is well for consumer till after warranty and or paste is deteriorated or pumped out. - we replace paste with higher quality paste but the tolerance is still too high and new paste is pumped out or melts out. My identified solutions: - replace paste with either the same thicker thermal paste or - use the higher quality thermal paste and carefully increase heatsink clamp pressure by adding washers between clamp and screw. Not between clamp and motherboard. This should apply to laptops too. Washer may not be need for laptops. If anything experiment with this idea. Hopefully this helps!

My PS4 is about 5 years old now and the noise of the fan was drowning out every other sound in the room. My roommate suggested it may be the thermal paste that needed to be repaired. Ran into this video before beginning the repair and almost second-guessed the diagnosis, but went for it anyway. The replacement was simple and now it runs as it did on day one and is so quiet I cannot even tell that it's on.

Hey man, thanks for the video. I have a question. Right after I changed my HDD --> SSD and changed the thermal paste to Coolaboratory Liquid Ultra, I noticed my PS4's fan would become loud a few minutes into gameplay. It's in a well ventilated area and I cleaned out the dust, so I'm having a tricky time trying to diagnose why the fan is behaving like that. Before the changes, it was never like that before, always hum quiet. When I put my hand on the console, it feels normal warm. Never hot. Even when I play for 5 hours straight.
@Tronicsfix8 жыл бұрын
+Eraezr Since it started after you replaced the thermal paste I would take it back apart and check to make sure that all the thermal pads are in the correct place. That's my first guess.

TronicsFix Hi. Thanks for your reply. I noticed in your video that not all platforms for thermal pads have a thermal pad on them in the PS4. Would adding new thermal pads on all of them be a good solution or is following the limited amount by putting them in specific platforms only, the better solution?
@Tronicsfix8 жыл бұрын
The reason you only see some thermal pads is because the one that go on the other "platforms" are stuck to the ram chips. All thermal pads need to be correctly in place in order to achieve proper cooling.

I purchased a broken PS4 to refurbish for a friend (I work with technology all the time, opening up a game console isn’t a big deal for me). The system was reported to be very loud, and turn off shortly after turning on. Sounded like an overheating issue to me! I opened it up, and sure enough there was barely any thermal paste there to begin with. I replaced it with the traditional pea-sized drop, put everything all together, booted it up, and bam: nearly dead silent, and no shutting off. Navigated some menus, downloaded some stuff for my friend, had it sitting there for awhile. However, I gave it to my friend and after a couple hours of gaming she reported to me that it shut off. She booted it back up and after she got back into her game she was only able to play about 10 minutes before it shut off again. She said there was no red light, and the fans were quiet, but to me this still sounds like an overheating issue. My other two guesses are bad PSU or bad HDD.
