As a black dude...this is probably my favourite RDJ performance ever...He wasn't denegreating black people...the character he played was actually the smartest person in that crew. The way I see it, the movie was showing how method acting can be taken to ridiculous levels. Besides, the movie makes fun of nearly everyone.

Thats what people didnt want to see. His character Kirk Lazarus was in blackface to make a couple of points, and Robert Downey Jr was playing Kirk Lazarus and played him damn well. That was also why Brandon T Jackson was in there as Alpa Chino to call out that very point, while his own character was hiding parts of his true identity. I dont think that most of the people complaining saw the movie.
@caomhan84
@caomhan84 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that's exactly the point. It was meant to show the ridiculous lengths his character went to as a method actor, and (as they brought up in the film) the fact that his character was cast as a black man despite being white, because they wanted a 3x Oscar winner in the movie instead of an actual black actor. That was the ENTIRE schtick. In 2008 not many people cared, aside from a few bloggers and one woman from the NAACP who said it was racist and got on TV and complained about it. Even other black actors were congratulating him on playing the character so well. Fast forward to 2020 and Twitter "rediscovering" this movie, and....you know. People who were 7 or 8 when the movie came out were suddenly offended as 20 year old recreational activists.

@@caomhan84 Nope. The whole fake outrage and cancel-culture nonsense is an orchestrated move from right-wing people designed to create resentment against the left. "I don't break character until I do the DVD commentary!" Fun Fact: Like his character, Kirk Lazarus, Robert Downey Jr. is a method actor and stayed in character as Sergeant Osiris/Lazarus even while cameras were not rolling. Bonus Fact: Ben Stiller said nearly all aspects of the Les Grossman character were developed by Tom Cruise, including the dancing and the look of the make-up. Stiller said that in addition to the more obvious make-up effects applied to Cruise's face and head, and the extra hair on his chest and arms, Cruise also decided to play the character wearing oversized prosthetic hands.

It's a satirical movie. "Tropic Thunder" pokes fun at Hollywood for how they use white actors to play characters that are asian, african, indian and so on. People that are triggered by this movie don't understand that it is criticizing the exact phenomenon that they themselves are critical of. Besides that it satirizes celebrity culture, method acting, sequels, war movies and the movie industry in general.

The thing is, this movie respects people's intelligence. They're not making fun of autistic or other neuro-divergent people with simple jack, they're mocking those bullshit Hollywood "Oscar bait" movies that use neuro-divergent people as props to make a feel-good movie. They're not mocking black people with RDJ in blackface, they're mocking Hollywood performer's egos and how black people are often portrayed in Hollywood. Most people are smart enough to see that.

He really knows what he is talking about.. He went to jail over drug's And made a huge come back in the 2000's when He got clean... A lot of younger People don't know that he battled with drug's for half his life... All people know about him now is that he's Iron man.. Not kicking his back in just making the point of his come up and come back from a drug that kills most people..

You have to check this out in DVD format with the actor's commentary. The part where Robert Downey Jr's character says he doesn't drop character until he does the DVD commentary is played out, its comedic genius. He does the voice over in the voice of the sergeant all through the movie, then once the movie reaches the point that he becomes the blonde actor he is acting as, he switches to that guys voice, and finally, when it gets to the credits and it shows Robert Downey Jr's name along side his characters, he then finally switches to his real voice. Just brilliant writing there.

FUN FACT: In the movie RDJ’s character Kirk Lazurus says says “Man I don’t drop character till I’ve done the dvd commentary.” Well in the actual commentary RDJ is in character as Lincoln Osiris all the way until Kirk goes back to his Australian accent and then when the credits roll he goes back to himself as RDJ. Also this movie is still relevant for today because it is entirely believable that a movie studio would almost actively go out of their way to have an acclaimed, legendary actor who is white play a black man than risk hiring an unknown actually black actor play the part. And Robert Downey Jr. was actually so good at playing a black man that in the special features of the bluray Brandon T. Jackson who plays Alpa Chino said he practically treated him like a black man.

Almost nobody notices Mcconaughey sprinting off super quick right back into the jungle, it's a fantastic little detail. As for the 'blackface', they were very apprehentious about going ahead with it, and test-screened it before, to make sure the interpretation landed as intended. The crucial part is the interaction between RDJs character and BTJs, with them both stating outright why it's happening, and the latter clearly voicing his displeasure with the situation. This was RIGHT after Iron man. The fact that this movie actually went over as well as it did probably saved his career more than iron man did, because if people got as offended as they could have, RDJ would've ended right then and there forever lol. He was actually nominated for best supporting actor that year because this movie was so well received. He lost to Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight.

This movie literally saved Tom Cruise's career, not RDJ's... all the scientology beliefs & horror stories from former members that started leaking online in the mid 2000s along with all his weird couch jumping antics & that internal recruitment video had the majority of the public thinking Cruise was absolutely insane...

Dope reaction, guys! This is exactly how this movie was meant to be received, and WAS for a while, before all the nonsense. Comedy's got no boundaries, and no one demographic is "safe" in this. Which also makes it relatable to just about everybody. I feel like Tropic Thunder is much like South Park or Chappelle's Show, where the joke's on everybody. I think this movie is just objectively funny, unless you hate comedy. lol Got a sub here!

Then a bit before our unit went to Iraq, I had to replace them, but you couldn't get the green nylon, it was black nylon. I loved those green nylon Jungle boots. I think we were issued desert sand Jungle boots, but as I actually paid for the green nylon Jungle boots, maybe they meant more, but they were so comfortable.
