An interesting fact about one cast member in the film. Nick Nolte who plays Sgt 'Four Leaf' Tayback, the fake Vietnam veteran that the 'Tropic Thunder' film-within-a film is based on, was actually arrested in the 60s during the early years of the Vietnam War for selling counterfeit draft ID cards. He was ordered to pay a $75,000 fine and got a suspended 45 year prison sentence. Because of the conviction, he couldn't join the military and so he missed out on going to Vietnam which apparently he's always regretted, but I personally think he dodged a bullet, so to speak. So I think the character of Tayback is loosely based on Nolte himself in that they both didn't go to Vietnam, except they added the 'stolen valor' angle for the Tayback character. To me this story makes the character even funnier and I give a lot of credit to Nolte for taking on the role and making fun of himself like that.

Steve Coogan can do acting but mainly he's famous for this Alan Partridge character and The Trip a comedy where he plays himself, reviewing fancy restaurants with a mate (Rob Brydon), with banter and impressions. both highly recommended :) Mindhorn is a funny film I think you'd like and probably haven't seen, thats got Steve Coogan in a bit too :)

This film is ungodly funny and really gave rise to Robert Downey Jr's big comeback. I mean, no one remembers he got an Oscar nomination for this performance. Also Tom Cruise was having so much fun with this character and single handedly stole the show. This almost defeats Zoolander as Ben Stillers best movie, imho. What are your guys favorite Robert Downey Jr movie?

@TheGoIsWin212 жыл бұрын
@@TheMovieJourney A little side note: Having seen both versions, I think the unrated version is the real culprit behind your complaints about pacing. The original theatrical version was a very tight, funny comedy. When I got around to watching the unrated version several years later, I immediately realized how it was a bit harder to watch and it really interfered with the ability to enjoy the film overall. Just one of those instances where it was edited for more reasons than just rating, it seems

Wow, the Steve Coogan disrespect! Have to recommend Hamlet 2 (some of the humor hasn’t aged well but Steve Coogan gives one of the funniest performances I’ve ever seen. He’s brilliant in The Trip, which is like a fictionalized travel documentary starring Coogan as himself. And he’s great opposite John C Reilly in Stan and Ollie. But really I know him best for showing up in supporting roles like this one in just about every Hollywood comedy.

I saw this in theaters and I swear, maybe a third to half of the audience gasped I’m surprised when they saw Tom Cruise as Les Grosman. Including my boyfriend at the time so I couldn’t help but judge him on that like, HOW? Idk how you can’t tell, but that’s my favorite line: “ I want you to take a step back, and literally *FUCK YOUR OWN FACE!!* ” I think this is a great film that Ben Stiller made. This along with The Hangover was the last wave of movies that Hollywood made that was a true comedy. Since then it’s been shit with a bunch of PC scared, stick to reboots bc it’s “safe” shitty movies. Where’s the comedy nowadays?? It’s exactly like what they said on Sunny at that Thundergun screening. I just realized, they’re both not afraid of black face. 😂 Only Ironman, RDJ, could be praised for doing blackface. But that’s because they address it in the movie so I guess it works. 😅

Love this movie. I grew up in the nineties, so this isn't even that offensive to me, even now (rewatched it maybe six months ago). Genius concept, so original. Can't help but feel like a lot of the jokes were phoned in, but something like this probably would've been a nightmare to actually WRITE, so the half-assed nature of it somehow actually makes it funnier. The irony of big name Hollywood actors trying to convince the audience that they're just regular people, by PRETENDING that they're super-fake is hysterical to me. Robert Downey Jr. is brilliant in everything I've ever seen him in, but that look on his face when he finds out Four Leaf has hands, after his whole identity crisis/meltdown, I could've pissed myself.
