THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST USEFUL VIDEOS ON PLUMERIA. Watering and wintering are the most important things to learn while growing these gorgeous plants. Cheers from Moscow, Russia. I’m growing/storing plumerias on my balcony, temperatures go to +30c in summer and down to -20c in winter here

Dude!!!!! Awesome plumerias and video. Have had ours since 1995, they were my wife, and mother’s pride and joy. Lost them all in a fire this past fall (not the wife but the plants). Now to hunt down some more. You can tent them if you’re trying to get them winterized. They can handle down to about 28° with no I’ll effects. We live in iowa and can have -20° plus in our winters for prolonged time. They won’t survive that though.

Best indoor care video I've seen for plumeria. Dead on with the watering of these in the winter. Mine look sticks in a pot for 6 months...not the prettiest things, but their worth the colorful show they display in summer. And the aroma!-my fave.

We’ve had some for 5 years who only now started blooming. Perhaps switch up your fertilizer. We’ve gotten super extra & have 4 different fertilizers…1 to wake them up, 1 as a slow release, 1 is a organic weekly, and 1 helps encourage root growth? (I’m losing track tbh.) The organic weekly guy is Hasta Gro Planta. We have Excalibur (crazy expensive) and something in a yellow bag who looks like coffee grounds. Hasta Gro Planta only seems to come in a gallon jug (it’s a concentrate), but we’ve had a bunch of plants bloom for the first time.

Hey Linda! Sometimes it takes them a few years, depending on their size. There are some great plumeria fertilizers out there that will also encourage some flowering. 😊

Love my 3 plumeria! Mine are about 5 or 6 yrs old & finally bloomed for the first time this year & grew more than any other year because I finally found their happy place which was morning sun, afternoon shade here in GA. I do the same as you & just drag them into the garage before frost.

Hi. I got a Plumaria cutting which took almost 10 months to root. The reason was I started to root it in October 2023 in my kitchen window. This year, 2024 was the first growing season and the plant looks great. I appreciate all your help because I will overwinter this plant this year for the first time. Hopefully I see flowers next year. Thanks again for the great support on the plant. And hi from New York🎉

Thank you for the info. It’s reassuring to know that I have been doing it correctly. My plumeria are at least 7 feet tall. I remove them from their pots outdoors. Bag the roots n store in the basement. I am in zone 7. Can I bring them outdoors in late April when there is no danger of frost or should I wait longer?

Wow! Nice big plants! I usually wait to move mine out until day time temps are starting to go into the mid to upper 70s and lows are staying above 50F. I only do this because it reduces the risk of rot if there is precipitation.

Here in Central Texas, my Plumies (some in ground, some in pots plunged into the ground) I clip my leaves off before bringing them into the garage. But, I clip off the remaining leaves midway of the stem, no leaking or little leaking. I lost 2/3 of my 60+ plumeria i. The snowpocalyse of Texas last year! They were all unpotted as I always do, wrapped in blankets and all together in giant plastic pots, up on a wood pallet. It’s still hot here, 80s and ave 55-60-70 at night. But it can surprise you with a sudden cool front here. So I try to bring them in and put them to bed before that happens. It means watching the weather reports constantly from end of October on!

I know that feeling! Was just saying today while filming part of tomorrow's video that I'm ready to just bring everything inside because I'm tired of constantly checking the weather and wondering when the cold is going to come. I'm bringing everything inside on Monday, just ready to be done with all of that.

@@TropicalPlantParty only “plant people” understand the struggle right? My hubby wants as little to do with the gardening as possible while I commit most of my spring summer and fall to beautifying the gardens. He says, “why do you put yourself through all that work?” Etc. I’m over here, “because it is rewarding making a beautiful, welcoming yard. I love flowers and plants and helping things grow. And one day I’ll be too old to do any of it and that’ll make me sad!”

Absolutely! Should be just fine. Main thing is that they stay frost free and don't get watered, least not watered very much & often while dormant.

Jeff, instead of ripping off the leaves, you can also cut about an inch from the stem & the nubbins will drop off naturally. I don’t recommend this indoors if you have pets though. I don’t do it because a) cats b) the nubbins are harder to pick up than leaves c) seems like twice as much work…pick up leaves & nubbins. My 5 big boys are currently inside, the 2 smallest might go back out though. A grabber for disabled persons works marvelously to pick up leaves that are far back or between pots. Already picking up leaves off the floor *sigh* lol.
@TropicalPlantParty
@TropicalPlantParty 3 жыл бұрын
I actually edited out the part of the video where I talked about trimming the leaves back and leaving the nubs, because of everything you mentioned... seems like more work and you still have pick up the nubs, which is harder than picking up the entire leaves. Good point about the cats! I try and mention toxicity and totally forgot this time!
@texadianstitcher
@texadianstitcher 3 жыл бұрын
@@TropicalPlantParty we've gotten cuttings in the mail and the nubbins are a nuisance. I'll accept nubbins in that scenario though because it's easier to mail the plant, but it confirms that I don't like nubbins. But if someone stores the plant in a garage or greenhouse (or outside if your climate allows it) the nubbin scenario is totally reasonable.

💚💚💚❤ I am over here bringing my plants in that I need to and this year I have a few that I am debating on. I brought my fushia in but I know it will go dormant. I'm debating on bringing in a mandeville and my lantana I had to have this year. Is it worth it or do I just get new next year? Any thoughts? My partner wants to bring a few pepper plants in, including a habanero plant that is a literal bush right now.
@TropicalPlantParty
@TropicalPlantParty 3 жыл бұрын
I'm almost there too, this year flew by! If I'm on the fence about moving something inside, I tend to just take it in and make my mind up once I see how little space I have left😆 lantana will also store dormant, so they're pretty easy. The mandevilla can be more of a pain sometimes, so if I had to pick one over the other, id take the lantana inside. Although, lantana is usually much more affordable to replace next year than mandevilla. Hmm. Well shoot! Lol, I don't know!

Oooh I love plants I can overwinter in my basement! Do you have a preferred grower to get them from? I would love to try again with this beautiful plant. I got one back in the 90s at the Boston flower show, but it never bloomed and after 2 years I killed it. I'm thinking I probably watered it when it was dormant.

I just started a Plumeria cutting in July (my first one) and have watched a few videos on KZbin on how to care for it. The one thing that I’ve seen is not to overwater it. Well since then I’ve been DEATHLY afraid of it being overwatered which has caused me to continually move it in and out of the house on rainy and sunny days. It rains quite a bit here in GA. My question is this, since I am continually moving it in and out of the house, how is it going to know that it’s winter? My house is kept at around 72 degrees. And was I doing the right thing by keeping it out of the continual rain? What’s the solution to leaving it outside more often?

It should be noted that this applies to Plumeria rubra hybrids and, to a lesser extent, P. pudica ("Bridal Bouquet"). The "Singapore" types, P. obtusa, are evergreen and need to be kept much warmer in winter with continued watering. Here in south Florida, it isn't uncommon for them to be totally leafless and still flowering (especially the hybrid "Celadine"). Obviously there is no winter care here, you just ignore them. Well, you just ignore them most of the year, just dump some super phosphate fertilizer granules around them in spring to get maximum flowering, that's it.
@TropicalPlantParty
@TropicalPlantParty 3 жыл бұрын
All good info! Thank you! Lol... it's always amused me how they grow in places where it rains while they're dormant, but if you have them inside and they get much water then they rot... wtf! Lol. Actually a nice thing to not have to worry about watering them.

Hi, I’m located in NJ and received a plumeria root from a friend from Hawaii in January 2020. It bloomed flowers in the summer of 2020 and no leaves. I brought it inside and kept it under a grow lamp inside and it kept its leaves. I brought it outside when NJ temps were 60’s and had no flowers. I brought my plant inside at the end of Sept 2021 near a window when temps started to drop below 60 and have watered it once a week. I just noticed today the yellowing of the leaves, so I think it is going dormant. Questions: should I stop watering it now? Is it safe to put in my garage or basement . . .our garage temps can be cold? When should I bring it out to get light or use a grow lamp and start watering? Thank you.
