That’s right but you have to understand the context. Most Mother is taught as a subject in Singapore up until secondary level. There is almost no emphasis on Mother tongue at the tertiary level. On top of that, everyone are merely proficient in writing Mother tongue in exams. It is not within our control that English is the main medium in conversing with one another, public sector and also examinations. So one to be fluent in a language, it is important to converse it on a daily basis but when mother tongue takes a backseat in the society like Singapore (although I am sure some Singaporean still converse in their Mother tongue daily) as opposed to being the main form of communication in Malaysia(Malay), how do you expect ALL Singaporean Malays to be absolutely fluent in Malay. Know the context before you “ohhh eVeN mAlAySiAn....”. It’s like saying “Chinese is China can speak better Chinese than the Chinese people of Singapore,” it makes no sense at al. Point of the video is just to laugh at people’s fluency with their Mother tongue or the lack thereof, so why not just enjoy that rather than being overproud about a pointless issue.

Kalau cakap lupa diri kalau gitu kenape ramai bangsa lain di Singapura campurkan perkataan melayu macam “makan” “atas” bila tengah cakap.

Firstly, English is the one of the official languages in Singapore and it is also everyone’s first language. We use English to communicate especially at workplace or school where we spend most of time at. English is the medium of instruction/communication. Unlike Singapore, Bahasa Malaysia (Malay) is malaysia’s only official language and hence it is also spoken by 98% of the popularity as their first language as well. Thus, they speak malay all the time/most of the time. Hence, It’s totally unfair for people to compare malaysians and us. However, at the same time, that’s not an excuse fo us not being fluent in our own mother tongue. We could have balanced them out by speaking Malay when we’re at home. But the problem is that, even families are using English to communicate with each other instead of their own mother tongue. That’s a major problem that we have to fix in Singapore. It’s kinda upsetting and embarrassing to see this happening.

After reading multiple comments, this is the best politically correct answer thus far. You basically nailed all the relevant points on why mother tongue is a dying language in our current society.
@i2cybeast6 жыл бұрын
Language is a perishable skill, like a knife where it has to be consistently sharpened otherwise it rusts and becomes blunt. Mastery in both languages or multiple languages requires discipline and dedication. I totally agree with you, I prefer to look at our internal problems and not compare with the outside world yet. A tip to master both languages is to READ. Sadly it is something that is not prevalent within our society (except during exams) thus you see the erosion of English and mother tongue languages.
@jarenong6 жыл бұрын
Malay is the official language but obviously English is the working language. It is the language that binds all races. And yes, mother tongue at home, english outside. This is what LKY wanted, and has said on video this is what he wanted as an ideal balance.

I agreed with this. Instead of we argue each other because of "country territory" things we can strengthen our identity and be more proud of ourselves . If you can see most of us in malaysia indonesia singapore and philippine have same races (malay, borneo, some javanese and etc... also chinese and indian) because before these countries even exist we are the native of this land, this archipelago. We may be in different country now, but who know our ancestors may have seen each other, live together or even close friend to each other.

I'm Indonesian and i know the question.

Dampaknya apa?

honestly don't know why some malaysians/non malays who speak malay are criticising some of the people in the video and subsequently, the malay community in sg. it's quite a natural effect since the whole country is operating on the english language and only in certain situations is malay or one's mother tongue used and when it is used it's usually in informal situations. it's not only seen in malay but also in tamil, chinese and other mother tongue languages. it makes sense that non-malay malaysians are able to have a similar or better fluency in bahasa melayu than the malays in sg since malaysia operates largely on bahasa melayu. but it does not mean that malays in sg 'lupa asal-usul' or are ignorant of their history, in an ever-growing and modernising country like sg, traditions and culture may be lost but we try to hold on and preserve what ever we can to hopefully pass it on to future generations. there is quite an effort to embrace the malay culture in sg. language is not the only expect of a culture. although our bahasa melayu is not very fluent we still keep in touch with traditions and values from our well-loved culture

It's not like they're the child of Malay immigrant in US for example. They're native to this area! Did the gov of Singapore really recognize the special position of Malays? It's gov job to protect, safeguard, foster and promote their political, educational, religious, economic, social and cultural interests and the Malay language.
