Finally the Dorset Stour is fining down nicely but the blustery wind is straight downstream. Watch as I explain how to control the float in such conditions to catch some roach. Roach fishing in these conditions may be far from ideal but it's good to know how to beat less than ideal weather. My second roach book, 'Big Roach 2', is available from calmproductions.com

Nice to watch a master at work; unfortunately I’ll have to keep searching to find one 🤣🤣 Nice video Mark 👍 Do you ever use backshot in a downstreamer or dip the tip below the surface while trotting? I have done this on occasion when the wind is really bad by slowly backwinding the reel (closed face) to keep a very tight line. It can be effective but is very hard work and needs mastering.

I've used backshot, especially with a stick float. The top end of the Towpath at Wareham was a constant trial when it came to downstream winds - below the bend, in the days when it was accessible, was far easier as the wind was mostly off your back. BTW did you fish that gale-stricken match at Wimborne back in Jan 86? From my records I had 1-11 of small dace for 4th, a tough day!

My memory is not like yours Mark but yes I think I did. Can certainly remember the news of Dave’s bream haul filtering through.

Sometimes pays to have another rod set up shallower & have a trot down the edge or "Lay On" for 10 minutes while you have a Coffee & a bite to eat.

Nice video again, very enjoyable. Had similar problems with strong winds on the Avon on Thursday, still managed a few good size Dace and a Chub of a pound and a half. Friday was a much better day for the Roach with three over a pound ,a few 8-12 oz fish with the usual smaller specimens. Enjoyed our three days, caught every day, looking forward to getting back in a few weeks.
