Welcome to Atop the Fourth Wall, where bad comics burn. In this episode, Linkara looks at a comic from Marvel's defunct Epic line - a romance comic called "Trouble!"

ORIGINAL INFO: When you name your comic imprint “EPIC,” truly nothing signifies that better than… a romance comic.
RUMINATIONS: Trouble’s primary flaw is in its massive retcon (which I’ll presume you’ve watched the episode before reading the ruminations and thus know what that is) that of course was ignored by every person on earth after it was revealed. But of course it’s certainly not its only one. Simply put the story just isn’t all that interesting. Having read ahead now on stuff that’s going to happen, there isn’t anything insane enough to really qualify Trouble as one of the worst comics ever made. After all, we live in a world where Marville, Cry for Justice, Holy Terror, and lord knows how many other awful, awful comics exist out there. The majority of its hate really goes for the retcon. Fair enough, but on its own it’s just a dull romance about people we don’t care about and a lot of their dialogue is stilted and crappy, which can be said of even much better comics out there. It’s certainly nowhere near good, but I don’t think it’s as awful as many would make it out to be.
That being said, the covers are the WORST. What the hell were they thinking?

You know in every second of my 24, almost 25, years I have asked myself many questions. I have thought about theology, rationalized my place as a young Christian in a modern world growing more in favor of rational over tradition. I have pondered the basic and advance scientific explanations of all forms of nature and the mechanics of the human and all physical objects. I have questioned the system of the patriarchal society that makes it harder for our sisters and wives to find an ideal living without support. I have asked about the benefits and failings of war and the horrible acts man does upon his fellow man. I have questioned where I stand on my political believes, asked why capitalism and democracy which seems like the most ideal way for a government to sustain in the longterm can still be so easily corrupted or at least not help those who need it most. I have read the writings of the great philosophers and questioned their perspectives and how their theories and teachings can impact us today even if we don't follow their beliefs. I've tried to understand the conundrums of prejudice in all its forms including sex, race, and religion to name only a few and why so many disagreeing parties must resort to bloodshed and hostility. I have even asked if there is life on other planets, and have tried to comprehend how complex the world was before mankind even existed. I have looked upon the art of cultures both ancient and of the recent past to asked what they truly mean. All these questions and conundrums I have asked myself in my time on this Earth as I continue to grow and mature as a human being and there are many more questions I have yet to find. However, out of all these questions and more I have asked, not once.... not.... once do I recall ever.... EVER asking myself nor would I ever have the faintest desire to ever ask myself the HUMBLE HYPOTHETICAL CONCEPT OF "Hey... I wonder what the sex life of Ben and May Parker was like when they were in high school..." because WHY PRAY TELL WOULD I OR ANY COGNITIVE BEING FROM AMERICA TO THE MILKY WAY GALAY EVER ONCE IN THEIR EXISTENCE STOP TO ASK SUCH A QUANDARY AS THAT Thank you Mr. Millar for answering this ancient question that nobody but nobody ever asked. -_-

So just to be clear here, Aunt May looks suspiciously similar to MJ, his mother resembles Gwen Stacy, and the snooty twerpy guy was named Peter. I'm sure that last one is a coincidence that I'm reading to much in to but good Lord it's a wonder Peter Parker can function at all. I mean, I know no one acknowledges this in canon but still yeesh. And I just imagine Pete looking at old photos of his family and when he sees young May his eyes widen in horror

I know being teenagers, they're probably not going to be very responsible (being not as exprienced) but they could at least show some signs of intelligence, something that came naturally to Peter Parker...unless he's just the family's black sheep... which is entirely possible, if this were actually cannon

"Mark Millar has just as many stories that are uplifting" Could I see some works to back that up? From the writing I've seen of his(including Wanted, Jupiter's Legacy, The Ultimates, The Authority, Kingsman, Kick-Ass, Civil War, Superman For the Animals, Superman Red Son, Ultimate X-Men, etc.), he's in love with shock writing, and even his works made for younger audiences are known for leaving people feeling uncomfortable. Even when there's a happy ending, it's more of a stalemate achieved through a LOT of death and destruction, and we're left wondering "Was it worth it?" Plus, Millar seems to share a trait with another certain Miller, in that he idolizes superpowered beings, elevating them to God-mode status(especially in Wanted and Superman Red Son), and believes that people with power should lord it over others. ...Just saying, I'd love to know if Millar ever made an actual "feel good" story that doesn't leave me hating humanity or feeling ashamed I was ever born...

WELL. once in one of the "soap-opera-ish" tal shows from my country, "Caso Cerrado", which my mom watches just to have background noise and to fall asleep, once featured the story of a woman, who, took samples of semen and sperm of the then-gay neighbor of her daughter (more or less, details are sketchy of m memory), used those in her daughter "as experiment", and then a kid was born. years later, she (the now grandma) tried to demand the gay guy in that show for "maintenance money" for the kid (and even told the kid "go for the money"). they discovered what she did during that episode. i don't know whats worse. either all that fuked-up story was real, or someone imagined that story so it was written, and played out by actors.

I don't get comic creators sometimes. This was apparently supposed to bring Romance Comics and "expand" (I use that term loosely) the Spiderman mythos. So their plan was to make the characters completely horny, unlikable douche bags? It doesn't help that these are long established characters. Sure there was you could use that "We used to be more younger and horny before" plot point, but they aren't even trying to make these characters resemble what they will be in any way. Why not just make them original characters? What's the point of making them Peter Parker's parental figures!?

If adaptations of Millar’s work can improve his stories like Wanted and Kickass, then maybe I can find a way to improve The Unfunnies. While I think there’s some interesting ideas: dark comedy turning into psychological, metafiction horror slightly, slightly like Animal Man, a kid friendly comic strip world suddenly being thrown into immoral, murderous chaos that no one has the answer for, the creator of the strip turning out to not only be the cause of it, but a criminal on death row. It’s just a shame that while I haven’t read it, aside from some screenshots of panels on Google images, just reading people talking about the story, seeing the covers and the TV Tropes page makes me feel dirty in the worst possible way. It didn’t need to be _this_ dark!

Then all of a sudden, he wrote Superior and since then, he's been really good. Jupiter's Legacy, Huck, MPH, and Starlight... stories about really well-written characters, uplifting messages and tone, and or really fascinating and engaging superhero stories. I wonder what finally got him to decide to write stories that aren't... well his other infamous stuff. Speaking of worst things, like you said in your ruminations, Trouble ain't even close to being one of the worst comics ever. Now if you want something by Millar that is in that ballpark, you got The Unfunnies. So much wrong with that comic... ugh.

You know. it'd make a lot of freudian sense if Mary was like MJ, implying Peter is attracted to women that look like his mother. It's true for some guys in a healthy way. Other it isn't true and sometimes it's unhealthily true. but... 1) Considering Peter's parents died pretty early in his childhood, Aunt May might have been his mother figure. 2) Mary kinda looks like Gwen Stacy, so the theory still kinda stands, just applied to a different girl...

Plus, Linkara should really look at something from Avatar Press, which is the opposite of DC & Marvel. Oh Mark Miller. Probably the comic book writer I'm the most indifferent to. He's written plenty of good stories most of which were under someone else's thumb. When left to his own accord he writes the Unfunnies (which and me question his psyche) and Nemesis (which is basically what if Batman was a villain and even more fucked in the head than the Joker). As for this comic aside from the dumbass retcon (and a bit uncomfortable considering who these characters are), this story's problem is being a boring uninteresting romance.

+KidSnivy69 The guy can write, his problem is just that he has the same problem than most teens, "Adults" and DCCU Fanboys have: He thinks adult themes make a story better no matter what. When he just takes things easy, he makes great books. Huck right now is a great story that has none of the usual Millar tropes. And thanks to his mediocre and overated event, we got one of the best MCU movies.

@FNGLHR

+KidSnivy69 I think the problem with Millar is that half the time, sooner or later, you end up hating everyone in his books or just feeling really sick. I really don't like how he seems to think all readers want the bad guy to win, because while I see that sometimes... it's usually not any bad guys who are the depraved pieces of shit he creates. Even when it isn't superhero stuff, it just feels and crass for the sake of shock value. Now not everything devolves into that, I know, but when Millar goes that path it just gets ugly. His, uh, profile is not helped though by his abysmal job on Marvel Civil War and how he basically assassinated Tony Stark's character for years, basically turning into a cartoonish version of George W. Bush who justifies his actions in the name of security while shoving people into what is essentially interdimensional Gitmo and creating murderous illegal clones of his friends that kill his other friends. Seriously, they should've pulled double duty with the main Iron Man and Cap writers for that one. Everyone started taking sides during the writing for the damn event and no one could keep their characters straight and consistent. I think at least the MCU version will lack the serious case of bullshit from the original source material, but that's because the Russo Brothers actually seem to know who these characters are. Millar just did what he wanted. I hope this isn't too much of a tangent, Civil War has been on my mind recently for more than one or two reasons. One last thing, Mariam Sharpe was a fucking bitch and she should've turned out to be a skrull. She is half the reason that stupid event was so terrible and no one ever mentions her when they talk about it.
