We had a major problem finding a place to disperse camp this past summer! Too many people taking advantage of the system and making it very hard for others. How do you know if it's OK to disperse camp and how do you choose a dispersed camping spot? Traveling National Forest and Bureau Of Land Management, or BLM land it can be challenging finding a place to camp these days! Every area of National Forest can have it's own rules and you should always look it up if possible.

Getting out on the road is what Linda and I love to do with our converted cargo trailer camper. We're part time nomads and the nomadic lifestyle suits us to a Tee. Whether your RV is a camper van, camp trailer, travel trailer, motorhome or just a car and a tent, there's going to be something interesting for you in the videos we produce. Back roads and overlanding are part of what we do while exploring the western states for beautiful, peaceful and sometimes remote places to camp on BLM and National Forest land (public land). Taking care of ourselves as much as possible and doing our own repairs is a must because we travel on a fixed income and a limited budget. If your into being off-grid and boondocking, or doing dispersed camping whenever possible then you'll appreciate the discussions on batteries, solar panels and solar chargers or power stations and 12v refrigeration. Come on along, we're happy to have your company!

One of the many reasons I enjoy Nevada State Park campgrounds is that they ban setting up camp and leaving it empty until the weekend. They also prohibit saving spots. The rangers do a great job of enforcing the rules. It would be nice if the federal agencies adopted similar practices, but I am sure it would be hard to enforce with dispersed camping areas.

In Arizona you must occupy a tent or trailer for the first 24 hours or be in violation of State Law.

I am a couple hundred miles west in Idaho.... the same problem is here.... any campsite that is free and many that are fee based have RVs or tents set up in them when not in use to reserve them... some just leave a pop up canopy and a few chairs. I talked to the USFS about it and they acknowledge the situation but as you mentioned, there are no laws being broken. The USFS only requires that the campsite be occupied by a human the first night.... then it's 14 days total. I have heard that this practice started with hunters but now there are so many people wanting to camp that the practice is driven by excessive demand. Here I know that if I want to camp on a holiday weekend I would have to leave 12 days before and arrive just after midnight on the 11th day prior to the holiday weekend to get a camp spot. The large number of rigs I see towing campers on the those same nights tells me that this is what most are doing now. This does shut out the casual camper though. I don't do it... or haven't yet because I feel it's selfish... but I observe many doing it without any reservation or thought toward others. That's the way the world is now "me me me f*** you". I think (hope) that the USFS will eventually take steps to remediate the problem but what they seem mostly concerned with now is displaying authority writing tickets/law enforcement and closing down even more roads and areas to vehicular travel. Simply changing the rules to insist that the campsite be occupied by humans every 48 hours would help but I see that there is a way around that too.... Also as you pointed out, there usually is someplace to camp if you're willing to drive far enough.... even wide spots on the dirt roads get used here. It's likely to get worse.

It would take a policy change and enforcement effort on the part of the USFS or BLM to stop it. I bet that’s way down on their priorities list. You could ticket trailer owners from license plates, but how would you deal with abandoned tents? The officer would have to observe them arriving.

Changes should be made with the 14 day dispersement reservations system. Should be mandated that the site needs to be occupied at least 10 of the 14 days. I've seen friends and families switch out every 14 days retaining a camping site for the entire summer and hunting season while actually spending less than 25% of the time on site. Turns into their own privately owned camp site. Just wanted to let you and Linda know your RV /travel channel is at the top of my subscription list.

Couple comments here since I've been binge watching your channel. (1) Thanks to your video about making coffee, I found a way to keep the water in my pour over funnel for four minutes by resting the hole over a rubber backed spoon for four minutes. Improved the taste of my coffee. (2) Jay Leno has an antique car with Leaf Spring leather gators around them. The leaf springs are greased, then covered with leather gators by way of buckles keeping water and dirt/stones out. Something to consider with your cargo trailer leaf springs. Thanks Rick and Linda, your channel is one of the best in the boondocking space.

I was just telling my neighbor that I expect that my trailer conversion would never be done. And this is my first cargo trailer. My 19' Airstream had 20 gallons of water on the left (starboard side) at the front of the trailer. And it was a single axle trailer. My 12' cargo trailer is a tandem so I'm not to worried about weight distribution. I will be running super light compared to it's 7,000 lb rating. The only thing I would really like to change is my Diesel F250 for a 4x4 F-250 but I'll wait till I really wished I had one due to not being able to go where I want without one. If I do buy a another truck it will be my last one. But I said that about the Diesel . . . LOL . . . It only has 70K miles on it and it should go over 300K I just noticed that you did exactly what I'm going to do which is to be able to lock the door bar open. Smart people think alike haha I already ordered the part.
@freewill1114
@freewill1114 3 жыл бұрын
Concerning weight distribution, roads usually have a slight crown on center, so they drain well. If you can't get perfect left and right balance, you would like to have a little more on the left, as the right side is a bit lower most of the time. Does not apply on freeways.

@gonagain
@gonagain 3 жыл бұрын
You can still camp where there isn't a campfire ring as long as you stay within 150' of the road (this varies by area), don't drive across soft ground or through vegetation (don't destroy anything), etc. The mention of campfire rings is to help you find a spot where you know it's ok to camp for sure.

@gonagain
@gonagain 3 жыл бұрын
If you would like to help with the problem of ghost camping in our National Forests (people leaving their campers unattended all week to save the spot for the following weekend) then please contact the National Forest Service at: SM.FS.webmaster@usda.gov and voice your concern, but please be polite about it so that we get some attention. In National Forests, our dispersed camping areas have been limited in number over the years due to road closures designed to preserve our woods, but that has made the competition for campsites increase to the point where a spot to spend the night is getting impossible to find! Enter the "Ghost Camper". These folks park their RV and leave it in order to "save" the spot for themselves from one weekend to the next, even though they are not there all during the week. I've been told that some of these rigs stay there all summer. Dispersed camping rules: Dispersed camping is allowed in a one-mile perimeter away from campgrounds and 100 feet from any stream. To prevent resource damage please keep your campsite within 150 feet from a roadway. How to Pick a Campsite If you are going to an area where others have camped before, pick a site that has been used before. Plants, soil and wildlife are impacted by new campsites so using existing ones will minimize your impact in the forest. If there is no existing campsite, then follow these Leave No Trace guidelines. Camp on bare soil if possible, to avoid damage or killing plants and grass. Do NOT camp within 100 feet of any water source, plants near water are especially fragile. Do not camp in the middle of a clearing or meadow; try to make your campsite less visible so that other visitors will see a "wild" setting Do not try to level or dig trenches in the ground at your campsite. Pick a tent site that is already level with good drainage.

Those deer sure didn’t see Linda throwing that axe, Daniel Boone would be proud of her. I had a uncle lived in Kentucky, where Daniel Boones trail ended, go about a mile farther and that’s where he lived. People pull that same stunt in Tennessee, but they also might come back and not even have a camper. You sure can’t leave nothing in them. It will be gone. Same way with cabins, all you can do is have a shell, can’t leave anything of value in them. I am wondering, those logs in a big square, was that the work of the big footed people. Learn there signs and you will be surprised where you find them. Great video my friend. Take care and stay safe or stay close to Linda.

A lot has changed, especially in the last 18 months. Even here in the Midwest, I used to be able to roll into Conservation areas any day of the week and find a spot. Now when I arrive there’s signs of destitution, poverty, homelessness and vandalism.

Again, I can't tell you how helpful your videos are. We just had the axle flipped on our 6x10, which added just a bit over 4 inches to our ground clearance. Besides the obvious reason to do that, I need more clearance to install an under-mount freshwater tank (looking at a 30 gallon). At the moment in the cabinet below the sink we have a 7 gallon fresh and 7 gallon gray tank. For any extended boondocking I wanted more capacity, so now I can devise the plan to install the under-mount tank. This will also help us move that water weight back to the axle instead of the front.
@gonagain
@gonagain 3 жыл бұрын
I've toyed with the idea of an under-trailer tank for a long time and the only reason I haven't done it is that we never have hookups to fill it again. It would be an easy install if I ever go that route.

A lot of the LT 10 ply tires are 2 or 3 ply side walls and will get cut easily that’s why I run B F Goodrich ko2 on my truck, on my 5ver I run a Falken 10 ply that with a really stiff side walls, no flats with either over the years.

Love your videos. Real life, out where we love to be. This last year we haven't traveled, we have a spot where we parked the RV. Private, nice view. We only used the RV for storage and sitting under the awning. Been a very nice break, campfires and outdoor cooking, sitting, relaxing and watching the wildlife. 200 feet from our bed. 1/2 city, 1/2 county, 40' right of way to a never established road. Camping without traveling. Kinda like it....James

Water, climate, soil type, time... you'll notice some of those smaller trees by the campsite... that's the woods slowly moving. Remember, many (most) of these areas have been logged and mined so you're not looking at old growth.

Same thing in Pinedale WY on BT and on Ashley NF in Utah....locals stash their trailers in fav spot and then come up on Friday weekends. Lv them there all summer...recently the Ashley NF has posted signs prohibiting "residential camping"...but I saw no enforcement...yet. Positive aspect is that these campers do not use the pay FS and BLM camps so more room for me!
@gonagain
@gonagain 3 жыл бұрын
Hello Greg! I've seen that sign recently in Utah and figured it only applied to people trying to live out there full time (we've seen some huge piles of trash left behind from that!), but it may not help with this particular problem because they're not living there, just hogging the campsite. I hear that some places have made that illegal.
