I've been a private property owner in Oregon and Wyoming for all of my 74 years. If there's no destruction, I don't care if somebody camps or hunts or fishes on "my" land. I could not care less. Leave gates as you find them. Leave NO TRASH as sign of your passing. If you see me, acknowledge our ownership with deference to our cost in labor and treasure. Ask if it is open, if there are any rules, and we will be happy for you to Enjoy it with us. Excellent explanation of a microburst, BTW! I enjoy spending time hanging out with folks like you!

This was a problem also in the past here in Scotland. Now however we have a law allowing 'the right to roam' so the general public have access to pretty much wherever you want to go as long as your not walking through folks gardens of course. It has worked well so far.

When i was young I remember my dad had a water reservoir in the backwoods and folks from the city and different towns come over every summer for camping, he never denied anyone and most people were really respectful and overall good people!

Little trick for the trail cams is to glue bark to it so it blends in. Just use the same kind of bark and don't cover the lense or motion sencer.

When we did field research we camped near the sites probably sometimes on private but not fenced or signed land . We did have locals ask what we were up to but they said it was fine with them we were there a few days (we never did a fire in that situation) some even invited us to come by their ranch house to visit which we did sometimes. They gave us some food and lemonade and chatted quite awhile. We got some extra info on the area and they learned a bit about our study, all good. Thanks for the video, info and nice scenery.

I REALLY enjoy your videos, thank you for them. I remember driving around a corner thru the forest to visit the view of Mt St Helens blast area 2 yrs after the eruption. The absolute devastation from the wind from the blast was indescribable. We drove from lush forest into sheared of trees in the matter of a few hundred feet. It left me with the knowledge of just how insignificant we are against the powers of nature.

Here in Oregon we struggle with the checkerboard system of BLM and private land ownership. I use OnX to identify where private land and public lands border each other. I never camp near the line so hopefully I’m safe. What is really aggravating is where a forest or BLM road (publicly maintained) going through a small private section is gated and prevents access to a large section of public land. The big timber companies are especially guilty of that. We pay taxes on millions of acres that are inaccessible to public use because the government allows this. Just not right!

We see that here in Montana too, but in the last decade they've made progress in fixing that with land swaps and other measures to gain access for the public. There's still places that need attention though!

I grew up in Oregon in a ranching family and also owned my own 600 acre ranch in the Central Oregon Ochoco mountains bordered on 2 sides by the Nat’l Forest. If you own land bordered by public land it’s your responsibility to post it, especially if it’s unfenced. It’s not illegal for folks to camp “near” your land if they’re on public land. Just because someone is fortunate enough to own land near public land doesn’t give you the right to a “buffer” zone extending into the public land.

In isolated areas the restriction of access to large plots of public land because of poor governmental practices is the root of the problem. I’ve fought fires, escorted trespassers and poachers off my land and agree that people need to respect the rights of private ownership but owners have the responsibility of identifying their property so those just wanting to enjoy the outdoors can do so. This is not something the government "allows". The government needs to secure legal easement just like anybody else would have to do. The Federal government has been really bad about securing those easements over the years.There are landowners who sometimes fence roads where legal easement exists and a local federal office can tell you if that road has legal access or not. Many gates are just to keep livestock in and we just need to respect that and shut the gates behind you. Most will post a gate like that.

A traffic court judge mentioned (long story short), "Ignorance to the law is NO excuse." Thus, thanks for sharing this info and suggestions on how to ascertain private vs public. Also, that bear spray is ineffective (possibly a bad idea) when windy--never thought of that. Thanks for sharing.

I'm pretty sure that the secret to dealing with bears is knowing where they are before they know where you are. Being fully armed in bear territory is absolutely always recommended. Great post as always.

I miss the days of people respecting each other and the lands. All my swimming holes and fishing spots are all posted now. And yes we always cleaned even if was already there. Just not everyone brought up the same.

Excellent video. Great points. I am next yo the Lincoln Nat'l Forest in NM. When I am in the mountains doing ATV riding, I carry a map from the Forest Service as well as other local maps showing public & private lands. The Fish & Game officers & other parks officers have always been terrific in aiding knowledge of appropriate areas.

WOW! I stumbled onto your channel and watching makes me miss Montana even more. We lived there in the 1970s and 80s. We owned Elkhorn Hot Springs from 1977 to 1981. So we lived there and fell in love with the state. When we sold it, we moved to Missoula and loved living there until my career took us to California. Hi🙋‍♀️❤😍🇨🇦‼️ I had to put youse on the tv, such beauty! Those blue skys! When we decided to order our custom Taylor Coach, hubby had one request. 6.5 Dometic fridge - for his icecream. We travelled 33 states, starting in WA and OR, where we came across Tillimook icecream, well I had to hear about that icecream thru 12,000 miles and we HAD to stop on our way back, and hubby removed everything out of the tiny freezer we had - to stuff his icecream in there!!!😂🤣🇨🇦‼️ I SCORED an entire set of maps for BC Recreational lands!!! Gold!!! Ibought them off a guy who lived in Tofino for 40yrs...he had never used them, why?, because when you live in Paradise, who goes anywhere else!!😘🤣😂😍❤🙋‍♀️🇨🇦‼️

I think you were in the right all of the way. There was no posted signs so they probably couldn’t have charged you with trespassing, I would of camped there. In TN you have to have signs up every one hundred yards and your name and address have to be on them. If you have land out in the middle of nowhere like you said signs are no good. If people want on there they will tear your gates down. Some of the downed trees could of been from a ten feet tall hairy microburst. Great video, beautiful country. You two stay safe

I have the BougeRV and I love it. I needed some extra space during the holidays and ran it for hours on end on my Bluetti which I thought I needed to exercise. I’m far away from my favorite grocery store and I use it to bring groceries home without frozen foods defrosting. I put some frozen water bottles in it and remove them to drink on the way home.

I am kind of in 2 camps I think in a NF you should label your property since it would be hard to tell otherwise it is private property, but I also like the rule that if you are on private property without permission it is trespassing even if not posted because the people that rip signs down can still be written up so it shows they have a tendency to be some place the signs have been torn down. Over in Borrego, CA a part of the desert that historically was used for camping was sold. New owners did not adequately post compelling the Sheriff to visit and run us off the land. Sheriff kindly directed to land whose owner permitted camping.

That was nice. The Game Warden who gave us the warning was also very nice. By the way, it was a game warden because it was hunting season and the landowner thought we might be trespassing and hunting illegally.

the game warden didnt HAVE to give you a written warning, it was his desecration but i am sure the land owner was being a pain, in Yellowstone county private property has to be posted for you to be trespassing at all. and god forbid you were hunting and stepped off the road on private. i worked in law enforcement for many years and i can tell you with certainty that the only reason a game warden will be talking to you is to determine what kind of ticket they can give you. i am aware that far to many hunters abuse land access and on the other side every fish and game warden i have met has seen me as the one to pay for all of that. To be clear i always respect land owners rights and wishes and follow all hunting regs and have never been ticketed but it is stressful seeing a game warden and knowing he is coming with the attitude that i am guilty of something

i was out collecting rocks a few years ago on opening day of rifle season and this really nice game warden was curious what we were doing and came and talked to us for about an hour. super nice guy. didn't know much about rockhounding. we told him all about his adventures and he seemed to think it sounded fun. Ive never had any issues with a game warden before, but the forest service on the other hand.... i've never had a GOOD experience with them.

Fortunately, that game warden was nice about the situation. I think he was called since it was during hunting season and the landowner "outfits" from there. He could see we were just camping, and agreed that the landowner should put signage up.

good morning rick and linda, tony here, the splash diamond plate you have on the front of the trailer, is a great idea, but try something, the yellow bottle of rain x for the windshield to make the water fly off, apply that to the diamond plate? nothing will stick to it! also apply it to the solar panel, the out side of the windows anywhere water will collect on cause damage, . the best way to apply, pour on wipe the area in circles and let dry , then buff off,. hell i have a friend of mine down here los angeles, ca that applied it to the WHOLE TRAILER AND THE ALL THE WINDOWS ON HIS TRUCK AND THE HEADLIGHTS TOO. .sorry about that trespassing fine. , but if it wasnt posted there no fine. on private property there has to be a sign ever 1mile on a ranch spread, one in the beginning and some in between the property and one on the end. states differ but still the landowner needs to do his part too.

I have the Bodega TWW55 and can agree it's awesome. I really like the telescoping handle and wheels, very handy when having a picnic. Love that part of Montana, I go to the Castle Mountains east of there a lot.

Great video and awesome content! I had no idea that there would be private land patches in the middle of public land areas such as NFs. Good to know. Wish there were clearly posted signs, and that other folk would respect those signs and leave them there. But then that would make too much sense huh?! Also, you had some time ago reviewed the Alpicool T50 fridge, but I see it didn't make your final 3 list. Was there a reason for that? Here in Washington State there are lots of private land parcels in the middle of the National Forest. The property was own by the ancestors of the family that owns it now and since before it was a national forest and you can't take it their land away from them and I agree with that but if they want to be picky about people on it then they have to have signs up and I will respect that but no ones perfect. There is actually private property in the Middle of Glacier National Park in Montana with private homes on it.

No guarantee the current forest service map was updated. Don't let a game warden or ranger scare you off. Some think only they should be allowed and everyone else is trespassing in their forest. LoL I had one ranger ignore the signs to come on my property to ask where I got my fire wood we had neatly limbed and piled up. Standing in forty acres of forest. We had just bought the land and cleaning up the trash left by loggers.

I've heard about the purple paint law, here in Montana it's orange paint on the top part of a fencepost. It designates private property, and no hunting is allowed.

@@gonagain Actually... In Montana, painting a post or tree with orange paint doesn't mean anything. A lot of people do it but the correct way according to the regulations is to paint a board with orange paint and then attach the board to the post or tree. Even then, it doesn't mean "no hunting". What it does mean is " no hunting without permission.

It never used to be too much of a big deal, especially 20-30,40 years ago, today you have a huge explosion of off grid adventurers and you also have strange goings on. I’m quite familiar with people who’ve owned land in National Forests, and I know in some case where the Government wants the land they have, that’s another story. Today however land owners really are scared of trespassers, thieves, vandals, & drug growers. You cannot trust anyone either, and if a person gets injured on your land you can get sued. It really is a different world it’s not just a camp out in the woods anymore.

If you are going to continue to do a lot of outdoors exploration I would suggest painting your vehicle and camper a flat tan earth tone and remove any unnecessary bling. I wouldn't go full on camo since some patterns stick out more in different environments but flat tan blends in pretty good just about anywhere. Also maybe look into some camo netting you can throw over your vehicle and camper or stretch between some trees to block your view from the road. If no one sees you no one complains. My longtime camping and fishing buddy who passed away a few years ago that is what we did with his big 75 Chevy monster truck and it worked great. Just about anywhere we parked it in the sticks or desert you wouldn't notice it at a glance anyhow. You had to be looking for it to see it. I pretty much lived off of my 82 Goldwing Interstate motorcycle for about 10 years so being able to stealth camp was a must. When I got out of the Marines I stripped the bike down to the frame and rebuilt it as a Mad Max vehicle. I beefed up the motor and suspension. Did a lot of mods to lighten the bike. Put dual sport tires on the bike. Completely de blinged it and and painted everything flat black including the motor with heat resistant paint. I even went a bit overboard being an electronics nerd and built a lighting control module and rewired the bike in such away that I had 4 different lighting modes depending on what I was doing. I had a 3 position switch on the fairing that I could leave on standby for one of 3 different lighting modes other than normal mode and could be activated by a switch on my handlebars. One was blackout mode which shut down all lights other than a little blackout light that I made and mounted under the fairing that casted a dim beam of red light on the ground in front of me that the light source of was shielded from direct view and it activated my solenoid plate blocker. That allowed me to slowly roll into spots unseen to look for a spot to sleep for the night and still see where I am going. Another position was for limited blackout mode which blocked my plate, shut down everything other than the headlight and instrument panel in case I had to haul tail out of an area and minimize my visibility from the rear. Another mode was brake out mode. That allowed me to stay lit up normally but it would disable my brake light so I could slow down and check out the roadsides for trails, logging roads or abandoned structures to maybe pull into for the night without arousing suspicion. I made my own reversible bike cover out of some semi waterproof material I found at an upholstery supply shop, desert one side and woodland camo on the other that I could unzip the end of and fold it out enough to make a tarp shelter on the right side of my bike that I could fit my bivy tent in if needed or just sleep under it in my bedroll. Yeah that was all way overkill but I was doing a lot of contracted field telecom and construction work on the road as well as going home to Indiana at the times in between jobs so the bike was the cheapest way to do it rather than flying, renting cars and staying in hotels. All I had to do was to have my materials drop shipped to the job sites and the Wing was big enough and had enough storage space for all my tools and road gear. I rarely got messed with but I was only camping at night and bouncing at daylight so I was rarely seen and the few times I was I was able to split before anyone had time to get crappy about it. I found that all really interesting, thank you. In Hawaii we ran paintball games every weekend for three years and the one thing I enjoyed the most was figuring out what was the best camo that the players used. Hint; It's not the military or name brands. What worked best in jungle AND open brush was a camo called Diamond Back, which is no longer in business. What made it great was that it contained a dull yellow, tan, black and very little pale green. There's a LOT of yellow in nature in any area and none of the camo makers have picked up on that. Even all the greens in nature are on the yellow side of the spectrum. Look at a close-up of a diamond back rattler to see what I mean.

There are many apps that will have public/private layers that you can use so you will know for sure that you are on the proper side of the land you want to be on. GAIA GPS is a good one that I use so I make sure I stay on public land. These kind of maps can be downloaded for offline use as well.

In Utah, if there are no signs; the owner has to paint a fence post entirely yellow and it can be a tree with a large painted yellow square. I can't remember the spacing between the yellow fence post or trees but there is one. You will have to know what the distance is between the yellow painted trees and also they have a size that the paint has to be. Sometimes you will see old tires draped on fence posts painted yellow this denotes a private property. But sometimes people will deviously paint tires and hang them to stake out their hunting spot to lead you to believe it's private when in fact it's not. So a Forest Service Map is required.

I don’t know much about them but there are trail cameras available with a cellular connection (Verizon, AT&T, Etc.) that can send your cell phone an alert and the picture or video that was captured. There are also ones available that have internal storage instead of using memory cards.

You made that law enforcement officers' day , he got to exercise his job description in a lonely land. Private land adjoining national forest needs to be posted if the landowner does not want trespassers on ones' property. Some landowners are obliging to those wishing to use their land while others are not. That has been my experience.

Hello James, we usually have at least 4 days worth of food available, plus some back-up supplies that have a long shelf life (like canned chilli, MREs, etc.) Meals on the road tend to be rice and a stir fry of meat and vegetables, spagetti with sausage, saimin with meat, egg and veggies added and other, simple to cook, one dish meals. With the refrigeration we always have fresh meats and vegetables on hand to fix something up. It's never fancy because I find that when you are eating outside your food gets cold too fast, even though we always use insulated bowls. I hope this info helps.

TOO FUNNY!

rick and linda the law states that the landowner is to post signs made visable to a driver driving on the road, , it can not be posted on or under a tree , the sign must be posted in a clear spot , most of the time on a 4x4 post concrete into the ground. in the 4 corner states the owners that post on trees are in for a big fine for themselves, the sign MUST BE EASY TO SEE! remember the rhythm. ? next time this happens , ask the ranger about how often the sign has to be posted in that area or state>?

Beautiful country. Trespassing? I don't know Montana laws, but down here, Tx, the property has to be marked as private. The most frequent marking you will run into, is a purple blaze about eye level on the trees bordering the property, usually about 100' apart. The purple blaze is recognized in every state I have hunted in, tho not Montana. I would love the maps of the various areas, but as you said, you sure can tie up a lot of dough in them.
