Back in 2007 when Coyotes a gogo was the place, I was walking up to the door and 2 security guards threw a big falang out the door. He yelled and came crashing back into them, in which one security guard punched him and knocked him clean out. This was all within 3 feet of me. They both looked at me, I gave a wai and they wai'd back and let me in. 555. It was probably the most silly use of a wai I've ever done, but it was so fitting it was the first thing that came to my mind. They probably thought I was with him 555. Bit of advice to people- pay your bin. Don't argue, just pay it. Thais national pasttime is kickboxing. You won't win. No sense getting your ass kicked for $30.

I've seen some farang,he's a pretty huge lad muscles and all. And he probably thought so that way and thought he could muscle out without paying his bin. But hey its their turf and soon like 8-10 Thais were kicking and punching him to the ground. Yep all the bouncers from different bars came, they aren't dumb to fight you alone lmao. Drink, have fun and dont be a smart alex while holidaying. Cheers and stay safe all 😀

Hot tip #1, it's saved me a number of times. If you are sitting at a bar (or anywhere), next to a farang stranger that is being disrespectful or ticking off any Thai there... get up and move to another seat. Make it known with a wink and a wai- to the staff- that you are NOT with him/her and NOT their friend. Sometimes they can assume that just because you're sitting next to someone and maybe chatted even a little bit, you are with that person. If and when the boys come in to take care of him, make sure you are not in any way associated. The rest of the staff will have your back. Be proactive and avoid being confused as troublemaker's friend. Jing jing, na.

I think that this was a very appropriate subject. Unfortunately, there are still those who will come to Pattaya thinking that they're ten feet tall and bullet proof. I'm 6'2", and once I had a discussion with a security guy outside a club concerning bringing in a few tins of cashews that I'd bought for the staff. His instructions were, "No food from the outside." He was following his orders. He won the discussion. I went in and explained the situation to the mamasan. She brought the food inside, no one lost face, and I'm a well liked customer. On the way out I waied the guard, told him he was a good man, and brought him a small bottle of Jack Daniels the following night. That, dear friends, is how you avoid trouble in Pattaya. Good video, Trev. Thank you.

The ‘tone’ of this video was excellent. It was honest, forthright and sobering. I lived in Pattaya for 4 months in 2010 while attending a scuba diving school and learned quite a bit about different cultures and expectations in a vastly different part of the world. There were things I loved about it and things I didn’t. The lesson here? You MUST have 100% respect for where you’re staying. If you don’t?….good luck to you. Cheers.

I think this was one of your best videos ever. Thousands of baht and stitches is never worth an 80 baht beer. I once went outside of a bar to smoke and saw 4 guys gambling and drinking. They looked angry because i was watching them. I just smiled, pointed to my smoke and they were cool and they did their thing and I finished smoking. Best advice to anyone visiting Pattaya, don't get angry. If you feel you are getting angry, tell a mate or just pay and walk off.

Been in Thailand for 20 years. Being polite and street smart has put me in a position where I have never been in a violent situation, and I go out drinking most of the time. I've seen hundreds of people get beat up, arrested, conned, drugged and every other thing that can happen in asia(and lots of other places). In pretty much all of those situations, guys were either way too relaxed about their personal safety(not street smart) or being confrontational/angry to Thais, which is a very bad idea indeed. I still love Thailand and the Thai people. You nailed it in your video as far as advice goes, and the more people that can get educated in advance the better. Nice one.

I've been here for 17 years since I was very young and I can say your advice is very sound. The emphasis you put on staying calm and avoiding confrontation is warranted and as a bloke who has been here and lived that urban party life I always always give the same advice to newcomers. Another one I always tell people is "never ever use Thai swear words". Foreigners myself included won't understand how and when to use swear words at first in Thai culture. F'ng and blinding in Thai with Thai's will almost always be taken as though it's aimed at them. My ten pence there. Great video and you have a new sub.

Great video. Very informative as to just how easily you can get yourself into trouble here in Thailand. I’m back in Pattaya right now and Pattaya was where I nearly came a cropper almost 10 years ago. It was Songkran and outside one of the bars a Thai male was getting an absolute battering off several other Thai men. I honestly thought to try and drag him out from being pummelled was the best thing to do. As I started to drag the lad away from the beating, I was grabbed and dragged into one of the bars and the shutters came down. The guy was Dutch, he owned the bar and shouted at me I was seconds off getting potentially killed by trying to rescue the Thai guy getting a battering. He said they would have all turned on me and I’d have been toast if he hadn’t pulled me out of the situation. I was just trying to do what I thought was the right thing.

Important to remember that in Thailand if you get into an altercation or have some other issue with a native Thai, the odds are 95-1 that the police will not be on your side even if you are in the right. As for streetfighting, when I go on vacation it does not include fighting. Mike Tyson once said "anyone who fights for free is stupid".

A lot of good advice here. Probably the best one, to avoid a lot of problems later, is to check your drink bin every time a slip is put in it. This does two things. You know how much you have been charged and can keep a running total in your head and it lets all the service staff know that you are checking your tab. Less likely to get a padded bill this way.

You're forgetting the huge numbers of Indians, Russians and Chinese now traveling there, and doing the exact same thing Brits are renowned for. Cracks me up how the English working class stereotype is brought up at every opportunity by the people who would likely help genocide them given the chance. Who created the drinking culture in the UK? The ruling class encouraged it for centuries, part of the bread and circus indoctrination.

I was enjoying a night in the Tahitian Queen and when I checked my bin I saw I had enjoyed my time to much and was short on cash. I spoke to the Mamasan and explained I needed to go to a ATM and said that could she ask someone to escort me so she knows I’ll be back. She got one of the girls to go with me and all completed easily. On my returned paid my bin, bought the girl a lady drink for her trouble slipped the Mamasan 100 baht. Principle has got me into a lot of fights. But it's also got me out of some too. When I've been willing to stand my ground over something when the other person thought they'd steamroll over me they've been the one to end up walking away. I don't walk away from confrontations myself because it just presents your back as a easy target, but I don't go looking for confrontation either. I think the most blood boiling thing about the situations you described is the fact that the people committing the cons fall back on "you offended my honour", when they get called out. Hard to take the ethic of face seriously from individuals like that when they're simultaneously urinating over it at the same time. Theft, and cons have no honour.

Checking the bin is key, especially in bars that I don't frequent ... it shows that you are attentive. If there is a question about the charge, I will ask. I have seen some mischarges that have been honest mistakes, no problem. If it is a case of padding, well you catch it sooner than later. If they don't correct it, i will pay without a tip and never go back, as well as spread the word they pad bills. There is a very popular gogo on LK Metro that is know for padding the bill and most locals steer clear of it, unless they have to go in and buy a drink just to show "support."

- I’ve got what could be called Lizard sense, it’s saved me a few times in difficult places - If a scenario feels wrong, it probably is, the best solution is not to be there when it kicks off, an inner alarm goes off and it can happen very quickly, you won’t win so get out of it in the most polite manner possible - also accept that as a foreigner sometimes you will need to pay a bit more - sometimes you do get on the wrong side of paying for a drink, buying something, or a taxi fare - clearly try not to, but it’s not the end of the world, - it’s usually just a few equivalent pounds if even that, think of it as a small tax - and learn from your mistake, - some of the locals are very wiley, getting stung once is ok if embarrassing, they are very good at it - twice is different.

Absolutely sound advice, I've been visiting Thailand for 25 years and couldn't think of better rules to follow. However there are some random situations which just throw you; I was in Suvarnabhumi airport at about midnight waiting at the baggage carousel, I saw my case coming and stepped in to pick it up, and BANG! I was shunted (violently pushed) almost into the baggage carousel. I turned around and there was a Thai bloke quite squat and well built, glaring at me with insane eyes, in complete shock, my mind was racing, WTF do I do? punch him?, slap him? tackle him? (can you imagine what would have happened if a 6' 2" 100 Kg westerner climbed into a small Thai bloke in Bangkok international airport?) I decided to collect my baggage and rage and I quietly followed him out of the baggage hall. To this day I have no idea what it was about, what I did, or whether it was some kind of elaborate scam, but whatever happens, remember, stay alert, keep your wits about you and stay in control of your senses, WHATEVER happens.

Checking bin is always a good advice. Even if you are wasted and can't see a goddamn thing, it's better to check the bin and give your lady companion and staff an impression that you are top of things, which makes them less likely to try to padding your bin.

Great video, sir. It is important for visitors to remember, Thailand is the only Southeast Asian country that was never colonized. As a result, Thai people are staunch nationalists, and will ferociously defend their country and their people against all comers. Foreigners don't stand a chance if you rile them up. Respect the country and the people, stay out of trouble, and you will find Thailand is an awesome country.

Like you said Trevor, all farangs are guests over there, and when it comes down to it, the police and everyone else will side with the home team. But I also think about it as if there were a bunch of Thai guys at my local being rude to the staff and treating the females poorly, how would I react? Sometimes it helps to take things from their perspective. Thanks for another great video!

my first time in pattaya I was at a birthday party in a bar, met a nice thai lady ( she was a friend of the birthday girl, not working in the bar). When the bar had to close i told her i wanted to party some more and wanted to go to walking street, she joined me. We did a couple bars on walking street and then she asked me if we would go to one of the famous nightclubs because some of here friends would be there. I was like ok we go there no problem. But i really needed to go to the bathroom, so when we got in i went straight to do my business. When i came back there was a waiter waiting for me with a bin of around 8000bath while i didn't even order 1 drink, she and her friends had ordered alot... I was very upset and told the waiter i didn't order anything, and just walked out. Still believe that was one lucky escape of me, but since then be very carefull when they want to meet friends on a night out!

In 1979 I fell onto the table in a bar in Dunfermline, near Edinburgh, while dancing and pissed. I'm English. There were 12 Scottish men sat around the table. Not a good outlook. Great advice Trevor. Well spoken. Agree with everything. Always try and find out what the taxi fare will be before you take off. Talk to the driver. In Manila, where I lived for eleven years, I would always ask the taxi driver to turn on the taxi meter before actually entering the taxi. When they refuse I walk away. Lots of times these taxi drivers think you are a tourist. So they can do whatever. So I try to let them know too that I am not a tourist. That I know the place. This is of course you really do. The other note about the bar tabs is true too. Always look at the piece of paper they put inside your little cup or receipt holder. It also lets the one writing up the bills to see that you are checking them. Aware of things. The big problem though is when the guy gets drunk. Then I guarantee you those waitresses and mamason’ are going to take advantage of you being drunk. They love this. When the poor guy gets hammered then isn’t aware of the bills. So they do add on. Then at the end the drunk guy pays them whatever. I have seen this many many times. All over Asia. Not just in Manila. The basic rule is just don’t cause any trouble while in THEIR country. As you said Trevor you are in their country. So it’s their rules. Their laws. Not your’s. Don’t get cocky and think I can do whatever. Because you can’t. You don’t want to spend a few nights inside a foreign jail! No! Plus all the corruption money you will have to pay out just to get yourself out of there! And they will want it. Seeing you as a walking ATM. Stay off their radar. Have fun but sensible too.

So true your advice. I have seen it more than once. A tourist in a 1 on 1 heated argument, and the second it looks like it will overheat, in the blink of an eye several Thai guys pop up out of nowhere, and completely destroy the tourist guy. Not even half a minute later, all you see is that tourist guy laying on the ground. Not a single one of the attackers to be seen. Don't think you're going to be fine cause it's just 1 person in front of you. You are guaranteed to be heavily outnumbered 100% and it will happen so fast you won't notice. It doesn't matter if you are right or not, they see another Thai being threatened, and that's all they need to slap and kick you around like never before.

Agree. In all my travels in Asia including living there too I found that the ones who were most problematic were the other foreigners! Not the locals. The ones too who played the most politics. Everywhere I went in Asia I saw this. To me it’s “less can be more”. In terms of how many and who you hang out with. It’s about quality. Not quantity.

Once in Bangkok, I had taken a bar girl with me for the night. At the reception they asked her for her ID. Once in the room and after I paid her (upfront, ofcourse), she became a chameleon. Needless to say, things didn't go to plan and so I asked her to leave, as didn't want a confrontation and recorded the financial loss to 'learning'. Next morning, reception gave me her ID as she had forgotten to take it. I know that these government issued IDs are important for Thai people... cant really do anything without them. I went to the bar, found her and before she could kick off I gave her the ID back. She was really grateful and a bit surprised, and gave me some of the money back- something you didn't think ever happens in Thailand! Lesson: Be nice to people and generally you will find people reciprocating it; and that is not unique to Thailand :)

Good advise regarding taxis. I was in India once and hopped on a motorbike just for a very short ride, the guy didn't give a price pretending not to understand but it was such a short trip so I was willing to pay a bit extra since it was such a short trip anyway. At the end of the trip suddenly his comprehension was A1 and he asked for an outrageous sum, something like $20. A big argument ensued and next thing there was a big crowd of Indians around just watching for entertainment. Police came and in the end he backed down but what a ride. Never accept a ride without fixing a price first. And don't forget a price of "it's up to you" is NOT a price.

Just last week I had a server in a bar do the "I'm tipsy and fell onto you" trick. Luckily, I felt her hand pulling the money out of my pocket. I grabbed her hand, took my money, and told her to "get the fuck out of here." The other servers asked what happened and when I told them, she started yelling from across the bar that I was lying and that she had tripped and spilled the change she was carrying and must've picked my money up by accident. She actually got quite belligerent and they had to take her outside. But it's good to remember that just because they're wrong, and they know they're wrong, doesn't mean they'll back down when confronted. They've already shown poor judgement once.

The ladyboy thing happened with me in Phuket. I had five of them try to surround me walking back to my hotel. One gripped my arm hard (I'm 6' 225 lbs kickboxer in shape etc). So I knew something was up. Hey baby, this that the other, one reached for my yogurt cannon. I politely said "My wife and baby are at the hotel I have to get back, but you ladies look great tonight" and I smiled big at them. They finally let my arm go. I did not jerk it away, I did not resist. BUT, I knew if I had jerked away I would have been in for a serious fight. I'll bet two of the five of them were former pro fighters, fyi. I can just tell by the way they move. Show respect, but be firm and always smile.

Hi, Trev, another most instructive vid. and entertaining to boot Say, a good line to use with street-hawkers whom you don't want to buy from, a line that I'm sure you're familiar with, is: 'mai ao khap' (with that first word pronounced as 'my'). I have acquired very little Thai over my multiple visits to the kingdom, but I've found this phrase very useful. (It means something like 'I don't want to buy thanks'). Most importantly, it's quite polite. These traders, who can be very persistent, never get offended and usually walk off straight away. (By the way and as you also know, women saying this need to use kah at the end instead of khap). Keep 'em coming, bloke.

If you are looking for trouble in Thailand you actually have to put in some effort to find it... Occasionally it comes to those who dont deserve it... I use the 10 second rule... no matter what if I cant resolve it in 10 seconds I walk away. I will leave a taxi, a hotel, a bar or a woman and simply walk away and get on the closest motorbike. Thailand is a culture of saving face and it will take physical violence to get a thai person to admit they are wrong or have lied to you or scammed you... just walk away. You may get got a few times as a new visitor, eventually you can see BS coming from a mile away.

Great. Video Trev. I 'm planning a trip over to the Land of Smiles, with my buddy (who is a bit of a hot head), and I'm going to sit down with him and make sure that he watches this entire video! It could save us from some unnecessary confrontations. 😂

As you all know, Just don't argue with the bar bill, As i did this very politely and yet they yelled at the top of their lungs saying I am wrong trying to get other people involved, So simple lesson as many people has said, Just pay it and never go back
