A buddy(who isn't a bowler) of mine asked me recently while we were bowling "how I got it to spin like that". I then used my Master rosin ball to demonstrate to him what he needed to do, including rolling the ball off his fingers. I emphasizes to him you aren't necessarily "spinning" the ball, because that would make the ball rotate basically like a top if you were using your wrist to impart the wrong kind of motion on the ball. He got the concept pretty quickly and this method would have been even better, but I didn't have a football on hand lol.
@baldbrothersbowling4 ай бұрын
That's awesome. I use rosin balls, softballs, even golf balls. They all do this well. Great job.
@TheDeadeye54 ай бұрын
@baldbrothersbowling but this method is especially good, because the football will really tell on you if you don't have the motion right with a wobble or tumble too. I had never thought to use one before as a training aid, great choice!

I like this explanation my only problem is I hear a lot about being on the "inside" of the ball. But when spiraling a football your hand needs to be on the outside if that makes sense
@jetthehawktft46744 ай бұрын
And then is bowling "up the back" of the ball the equivalent of spinning the football but the noses of the football are parallel to you if that makes sense?
@baldbrothersbowling4 ай бұрын
To just spiral it, you can be outside the football, just like you CAN hook the ball that way. To get a tighter spiral with more revolutions, you actual do come inside the football. The way the hand is cupped and cocked, you fingers will be closer to your hip. The idea I talk about at the very end is that the spiral can help those who don't hook the ball much hook it more. If the goal is even more revs, you do get your hand farther inside in both cases.
@baldbrothersbowling4 ай бұрын
Also, your assessment of coming up the back would be correct if you grip the football centrally on the laces. In this drill, I talk about how you have to grab low on the laces AND rotate the ball in your hand to sit a little more in the palm. If you come up the back of the football this way, it won't actually be parallel. Additionally, when you spiral a football, the noise would typically be pointed at the target, but following these tips I outlined, it should be more diagonal. All that said, I greatly appreciate you watching and commenting.

The underhand spiral works perfect for me. I don’t know if there’s anything to do with me being left-handed, but I can visualize it much better than the yo-yo.
@baldbrothersbowling15 күн бұрын
Thanks. There are many similarities. While the yoyo has some small differences, they are pretty minor and advanced. The spiral is a great way to get you most of the way there, and for many, it's all they need. Glad this helped.

Is there wiggle room where the flicking of release is at the release?
@baldbrothersbowling6 күн бұрын
Differences in when it happens impacts the speed, so yes and no. To maximize the speed and increase the Rpms, the uncoiling needs to happen as late as possible, right before you release the ball. However, not everyone can do this and they need to start a little earlier. This usually means it will be slower and lower the Rpms but still may be an improvement on what you are currently doing. Some (myself included) will start it late but are still slower. This means you don't complete the uncoiling motion. This will also lower RPMS (this is why I am high 300's and not high 400s). Despite not being as fast and completing the uncoil, this method is still what had increased me to where I am today. I hope that makes sense.

It is possible to do the spiral release without cupping the wrist or bending the elbow.

You certainly can. The Rev rate will likely be a bit lower, but absolutely. You can try a football without the cup and see the difference.

That’s not a yoyo toss of a football. 🏈
@baldbrothersbowling4 ай бұрын
This drill is for those who struggle with the yoyo release. I could do the EXACT same release, but those who struggle will still struggle. The point is to give them something to try that maybe they can do that will be close. It is close. It still uses the cupped wrist to flattening the wrist to achieve getting the ball off the thumb first and into a roll. That part is the same.
@danipman2 ай бұрын
I think this drill is misleading and encourages a too late release and lofting because of when you release the football. (Much later than bowling ball). Also it would be better if you held it in the middle and then tried to "roll" it to your left. The underhand spiral encourages too much side rotation. Just my 2 cents after holding ball too long to look like a forward football spiral.
@baldbrothersbowling2 ай бұрын
I understand your point. What I will say to this are a few things. First, just before the 1:00 mark, there is a disclaimer that this method is NOT the standard for throwing a bowling ball. It is simply an alternative to try if someone is struggling with other techniques they have tried. My goal is to provide alternate practice methods that I don't see a lot of videos on, for those who have tried every other video and just can't seem to get it down. Even if they get too much side rotation at first, you can fix this, but it's a good was to get started if the yoyo and other videos have been too complicated. (I will also mention that pro bowler Andrew Anderson ALSO said that a good beginner technique is like spiraling a football :)) Second, yes, you may loft it a bit at first because you practiced throwing a football in the air, but again, if you struggle with rotation of the ball, I'd rather you slightly loft it and get the rotation, and then later work on getting the ball out earlier and down on the lane. It's simply a tool to get you started. I have spent SOOOOO much time in my work office or at home tossing a football in the air to myself, but focusing on the movement of my wrist to create a tight and fast spiral, and this, more than any other drill I have ever done, has had a great impact on my ability to translate to the lanes and improve my overall release. Again, I totally get your point and appreciate the comment, just know that this is a tool to use for those that struggle with other practice methods.
