Troubled Kids Get 'Reality Check' Behind Bars At Oklahoma County Detention Center

The Oklahoma County Detention Center reinstated a program Monday that gives troubled kids a first-hand look at inmate life.

This definitely reminded me of Beyond Scared Straight. As a matter of fact, the Oklahoma County Detention Center has been on that show several times.

Did anyone think to ask these children about the neglect and trauma they've endured in their home??? Did anyone think to give them an ACE questionnaire to see how high they scored??? Did anyone think to ask them if BOTH parents are living in their home? Did anyone think to ask them if they've been beaten at home, school, on the street? Did anyone think to ask them if they've ever experienced a violent sexual assault? Did anyone think to ask them if they know what EMPATHY is? It's a parents responsibility to model EMPATHY for a child so they can learn how to empathize with others? Did anyone think to assess them for an authoritarian home environment? DId anyone think to assess them for a permissive home environment? Did anyone think to assess their OWN PARENTS to see if the parents themselves have the proper good-enough parenting skills and practices? A narcissistic parent BLAMES the child for bad behavior and *refuses to look at how they've failed the child as a parent*. Bad children are rarely born. Rather, it's the adults (and sometimes siblings or other minor family members) who treat the child in a manner that makes them become hardened because they can see that "no one is there for me"? ...but what do I know? I've only studied early childhood neurodevelopment and personality psychopathology for the last 9 years. If you have a badly behaved child, you better take a long good look at yourself in the mirror as a parent. Stop blaming children for not being able to raise themselves, and hold the PARENTS accountable for not being good enough parents.

For the most part yes, but you do understand and acknowledge that some kids are just wired differently right? I also hope you acknowledge that kids who are taken in through fostering and adoption, etc... Are often already too damaged for the parents to "fix", no matter how they try. That said, yeah the justice system has little incentive to *actually* help anyone. It's a business that profits from getting people into that system, and keeping them coming back.

Years ago, there was a program for 1st time DWI/DUI offenders that made them volunteer/attend the mortuary and look at the bodies of crash victims including children. The news station showed some of the offenders crying and saying they would never drive under the influence whether drugs or alcohol. I don't remember what state, but I thought that was a cool idea. I like this idea too. Juvenile probation is some states have taken kids to a regular prison for a day, but never overnight.
