Tuning a custom engine build isn't a one size fits all solution. It's a state of mind. You have to be able to balance AFR & Advance with other mechanical systems on engine. The factory does a great job of doing this "safely". Part of that is the Knock sensor system.
When you build a motor though and go to tune it, it's difficult to know if your knock system is detecting "false knock" or actual knock. I've been studying this for a while now and wanted to document my thought process as I refine my tune while keeping knock detection in the balance.
This holds for all Gen III Small Block Chevy builds utilizing a P01 or P59 PCM.
