I’ve found on my small public trout pond good days and limits very consistently by jigging a small vertical tungsten on 3# Max line. 1/32 oz tungstens and even going as small as the scud missile. I do a cadence similar to bluegill and have even caught fish just below the ice. The trick is to not change the cadence even when they are approaching on sonar. I’ve had them turn 4 or 5 times on a jig bumping and fake eating it before smashing it. Black vertical tungsten with a black silkie is 🔥

Do trout generally have different feeding preferences under the ice? Usually when I go out to my favorite lake during the summer and fall and toss out a salmon egg cluster they absolutely light it up but when I drop one under the ice, they just can’t be bothered to come anywhere near it. I figured that while they’re under the ice they’d be trying to get whatever food energy they could but my success rate is so low that now I’m thinking they somehow become more particular.

Suckers and white fish spawn all winter and their eggs tend to thrown into the water column. Their super dense in nutrients and not hard to chase so trout LOVE to get their calories from them. Also, if their planted rainbows, the hatcheries feed them a kibble substance that is kinda bright in color, that’s why powerbait works so well on stocked fish, another reason the blob and other egg patterns can work.

@@spiltmilt are you sure? I'm gonna respectfully disagree. No way those are copepods. Copepods are so ridiculously small. Ive also had enough aquariums, both saltwater and freshwater, to know what copepods look like and they are very very tiny usually, from my experience
