This black templar is what I imagine someone who's fought years and years against tyranids, chaos and orcs to look like. I really appreciate how you did something completely different with the armor. I think it looks fantastic and captures very well that black doesn't look pitch black anymore after it's banged up grimy from years of war. For some bizarre reason I never watched the blood angel video, but I really like this approach. I don’t feel that this reads that black in my eyes, but the result really is beautiful. I wonder if toning down the highlight to basically end around dark reaper might be an idea. Thank you for all this inspiration!
@ChrisOsberg3 жыл бұрын
I see what you mean. It almost looks like an extra grim dark ultramarine. I'd personally avoid bluish grays, but that is pretty limiting. I guess when doing anything that deviates from pure black, you almost have to pick a subtle hue to go with.

Great work. It shows that you stepped up your video editing skills. In one of your latest livestreams we talked about thinking outside of the box and I mentioned 52 miniatures style of making a video to you. The big transitional shots when he is simply walking outside or inspecting some old rusty tool. That is visually appealing and breaks the monotony of a video. I think you did a great job doing stuff like that in this video. You coming in with the black templar box, twirling it like you´re too cool for school (quite literally now). That really made me smile. You don´t have to film yourself in cinematic shots to do this stuff. I think you did it simple and fitting to your style of teaching us the way of the pigment!

The symbols offset this so he would most certainly be recognized. Lovely video nevertheless, I certainly can´t paint to this standard :D

I loved this style for the Blood Angel and I love it for this. Black is always a tricky to do and I have to say I really like how you've done it. I mentioned in the live stream that coloured highlights on black are great for suggesting an environment and you nailed it with the blue hightlights and snowy base. He really looks like he's spent years crusading in the snowy wastes.

Black is limiting, like you talk about in the video, and I think you found a great compromise that reflects the cold, icy environment well, like others have mentioned. I'm looking forward to the next chapter! I'll be the only guy asking for a bone colored or white armor, but when I paint my marines, it'll be with a fairly unique, white-centric scheme. Also, the video editing is a lot better here, and I, personally, really appreciate seeing you share some of your experience as it relates to the sponsor. Great video!
@saltedllama27593 жыл бұрын
I love your Grimdark approach. I try to teach people how to do something similar - admittedly not as well - and also like you, all without oils. In fact, I find the process is much quicker than oils, as there are no in-between stops to varnish/seal the model, set up and tear down of harsh chemicals, a different palette and brushes, involved cleanup process, wasteful sponges or swabs to wipe off most of the paint, hours (or more) of dry time for the oil paints, etc. You can also achieve a depth of layers, playing with transparency, glazes, and opacity using acrylics that is much trickier with oils. I like oil paints for some things...kind of, but most of the look they create is, well, oily and greasy. Blanchitsu stuff was (sorry, not sorry) overrated, but it did create a legitimate movement in miniature painting. With acrylics, however, you get to create all of the effects yourself, full-stop, which can be more rewarding to the painter; and again, does require less chemicals, cleanup, and wait time. It was sort of like how NMM taught people to do TMM better; oil grimdark is teaching us to acrylic better.

This was an awesome video Trov, I thoroughly enjoyed the look of the leather parts particularly, I’m seeing some comments saying “it’s not black enough” but nothing in nature is ever truly black and I think the blueness really sells the bases cold environment. With regards to the sponsor I do think it was a bold choice but if it’s a product you use and find beneficial and it helps pay your wage and make more content for us then I support it personally. I wouldn’t be where I am as a painter without your guides videos and feedback so thank you and keep doing you.
@trovarion3 жыл бұрын
Thanks bud! You're right, I explained it elsewhere in the comments how pure colors on the white-grey-black spectrum looks odd to the eye because of that. But it's ok! I am only here to show options, if someone doesn't like that option...that's ok :) I am used to people telling me how I SHOULD for a decade or two ;) And yes! I knew there would be negative voices about the sponsor, but I actually do use it for when I am stressed or have anxiety (e.g. from reading too many negative youtube comments) and it really helps me. Better than any pharmaceutics could. I don't support unscientific claims like that it could help cure cancer or other nonsense, but this company doesn't claim anything like that, to my knowledge. I never take sponsors where I didn't have actual and positive experiences with the product. And yes, having sponsors helps being able to do the KZbin videos. Without sponsors there wouldn't be any!

30 ish year BT here. I wasn't sold on the armor till the metal edge highlight. Then it popped. It's really great to see more people exploring the "Black is usually not black," as black is often a really dark blue or brown in most instances. I love it overall, though I think the belt is amazing against the tabard but washes out against the black armor in the back due to the similarity. Imperator Vult!
