@@trovarion Hi Trov. I don't know if this is something you could use, but a video I'd really like to see, is one where you give constructive criticism to Golden demon commended and or pin winners. As said, I don't know if it is even a thing that you could make, perhaps even harder if people did not ask for that criticism/feedback.? You could also try to ask pin winners, or anyone who entered golden demon but did not win, to send in images for criticism? I think that could be a really interesting video to see, especially after the upcoming GD. 😁

For loaded brush technique, do you apply it on wet or dried surface? Seems paint still wet in the video. Thanks
@DanKeller

@@ralphpug08 two different effects. Both have a moist base usually. One is dampen slightly with moist brush then do loaded brush. Other is do one pass just redo base coat then do loaded brush. The tip is usually a heavier Base consistency than back of brush.

I felt one critical bit of info was missed that from my understanding and practice is critical for loaded brush, and I was surprised Trovarion didn't cover it. The paint you load with should be at least a little thinner than the one you pick up on the tip. This will help ensure good flow.

If it helps you to get the courage to start painting; know that there are ways to strip the paint off your models. So if you want your first soldiers to look as good as your most recent soldiers, you can go back and redo them.

If you're just starting, check out oils as well. Wetblending acrylics is less forgiving due to fast dry time and you also kind of need a wet palete, while with oils you have all the freedom and time. Discovering oils was what brought me back from hobby burnout. The finish is different to that of acrilic (more realistic) and I like it, but see if you prefer it. If you consider Oils - Oilbrusher is the least hassle way to go about it

I really love your teaching approach, how you both explain the theory, and how to apply it. How basics are the most important things, but being rigorous with them doesn't imply being rigid about them. Thanks for putting out all of this great content, you are the main reason I'm thinking of dipping my toes in this hobby again (after the all too common undiluted blobs of paint on LoTR GW models when I was 12), only stopped for now by the idea that the minis I find the coolest are way too often offered at a price I'm not yet ready to pay 😂 Keep the excellent work, hope you're enjoying making this content as much as I love watching it

I'm really glad not only that this video exists, but that you showed that oft-frowned-upon techniques of washing and drybrushing actually can be used at a higher level than just a quick and sloppy "cover everything with zero precision" approach that a surprising amount of people seem to think is the only way they can be used (therefore making them 'objectively bad' techniques, rather than just amateurishly used). Also, I'll be arrogant enough to say there's an even more important (especially for beginners) skill that you missed in your video (or maybe I just missed it??): Trust in the process. Don't give up just because a half-finished paintjob looks bad, keep going - a lot of art processes, not only miniature painting, go through an "ugly duckling" phase, where the quality looks bad despite an increasing amount of work being put in; it's important to actually see the painting through to the end instead of giving up at that step or thinking you're doing something wrong. Sometimes, the final highlights, the final airbrushed inks, the final glazes and filters, the final details being painted up, or even painting the rim of the base (in matte black) are what actually makes the figure suddenly look good. Keep going, trust the process, trust your own ability to deliver. There's a good chance you're better than you think.

Understanding that my blends won't be perfect on the first attempt in the vast majority of cases and the there's nothing stopping me from going back in and fixing stuff with additional layers and glazer was a total game changer for me. It felt "wrong" at first. I am supposed to be good at this by now, right? But in the end it's just unrealistic to expect that you'll get it right in the first attempt the majority of the time. Painting is hard.

Amazing video. I'd only add lineart as a great skill. You don't do that so that's cool, but I recommend it. A thin line of black or anything suitable dark around every shape where different textures meet. Like between skin and the leather straps. It makes an instant visual impact.

That is why i watch Trovarion and was subscribed to his Patreon for some time, the teaching parts. I'm not a fan of the entertainment part of most of mini-painting videos, teaching nothing really. Trovarion and other (live Vince Vinturella and Sam Lenz for examples) are very good at sitting down, dissecting techniques and teaching them in an easy and comprehensive manner with a clear result in the end. I feel everyone needs a reminder on the basics every now and then and you do it in a good way ! Keep up the awesome work ! Ps : Getting us from the basics to the pinnacle of your art (like the Everchosen Nurgle mini you won with, the Crimson Fist video etc) i think that would be a good video series to show the natural evolution of a mini with slowly integrated techniques to the pipeline, from tabletop okay, to mid-tier standard display/central piece of an army to Master display/Golden Demon/Everchosen winner like you can do ! :)

I know this is not related to brush techniques, but a thing very important to tell to beginners : Never compare your work with pictures on the internet . Our modern phones, (or great cameras of pros ) make minis look better than in real life (usually) Furthermore , content creators and people who share pictures online take the best shot , with the best light on the best angle . So you have no chance in comparison. Another tip : When progressing on my minis , I take pictures on different stages . Do it, and you will see why ;) Anyway, great vidéo ( as usual ) from Trovarion.

I'm 100% disabled veteran who just wanted to find something to get my time in order and my head. I was truly disappointed when I herd this com was great "not saying your com in general" but as a whole the wh40k com was great. I bought my first small paint kit with citadel paints an a mini from wh40k. Wanted to get better at painting and actually trying to learn the game bcuz I love a game where you don't know and strat is key. But when I first went to see some games in person an showed couple minis I did....granted didn't have a army to play but wanted to learn an grow as painter for wh minis an etc bcuz feel in love with how you can get lost just trying to figure out the mini itself. But then first impressions when I went 1....the way I looked I guess they thought diff of me an tbh didn't feel welcomed. More like everyone was waiting for me to leave bcuz how I looked. Yes I got tattoos dresss a certain way but don't mean nothing. Then tried to learn the game and ppl where rude about it. Saw someone who's minis looked amazing an wanted advice on painting an was literally told after they saw mine was.... " oh don't waste your time go back to rapping or selling drugs" smfh wow...... but I'll get back into it not to prove a point but.... bcuz it truly helped my mind my ptad anxiety depression etc..... it was always exciting to see how it drys an it I got it like I wanted. I'm not near or even close to people I see or yourself on youtube but I truly greatfuly appreciate your vids along with others that truly try an show an teach. Thank you for your content an others bcuz without it after what I delt with from the start with this com wasn't what I expected. But same time I've always been the type to prove people wrong 😂thank you for the vids

Sorry to hear how you were treated dude. I always find it wild that for most of us, we were social outcasts to one degree or another and GW, D&D etc gave us a safe community who accepted us for who we were, and now these things are stock market big guns the same people are busy treating all new comers the same way they were treated in school! Foe what it's worth there are a few toxic introverted incels who really need to do other shit with their lives, but there are loads of welcoming and inclusive people too. I'm always happy to offer advice on painting and to share work, I'll offer tips and uncritical assessments or just simply share work and appreciate other peoples work, no matter what level it is. Keep going - you will find people who don't have all the emotional maturity of an X-box live lobby. And I 100% agree about the theraputic aspect of it. All I do is paint these days, but it really helps me stay on top of my often chaotic headspace!

Great video, I have recently been using glazes and thinner layers of paints for transitions. I much prefer it to GW's more sharp highlights. I would love to see you do a video about using the coliur wheel and combining three colours to make new colour schemes and why some colours work together and what ratios.
