Love when your videos come out. That board looks just amazing. The call out at the beginning about how you don’t have a lot of tools but can still make something so great is going to inspire a lot of folks. Thank you for being so creative and sharing your projects!

For the pieces you can leave one side blank and engrave a crown on the other. That way you can just flip it over to king instead of stacking.

Making the pieces fit together for a king was slick. Perhaps framing the entire board with a border would make a nice frame. The mirror as grid also brilliant. Don’t stop ideating. I love my Glowforge too. If anyone reading my note is thinking about one then go get one. After three years I’m still coming up with great uses that I’d never though of before. I’m in the middle of making a pistol holster from leather for a friend. I’m not much of a gun person but the challenge of using the GF for leather work drew me in. Troy is a real inspiration. Not only does he make cool stuff but he spends HOURS filming and editing to encourage creativity.

I appreciate the suggestions. Every project I finish I. always see more potential. The border around the edges didn't think of that. I've been playing with it as of now I have made a new bottom layer that extends a little to hold the pieces. Thanks for the comment and the encouragement to keep going. I love these types of comments. "Let's go make something else" my little saying. Haha

was wondering if you used the magnetic sheets cut to the same size as the checker and glued to the checker, if they would hold together when you lifted them? that way you could save a lot of time by not having to cut them to make them stackable. If the glowforge will cut those magnetic sheets.
@TroytheMaker
@TroytheMaker 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks a good idea. You could even place small magnets inside a chip now that I am thinking about it. 🤔

Thought about doing something like that. One day when I get a Glowforge, I'll make my version and send you a picture of it. Anyway, the reverse sides of the checkers, you could engrave chess pieces for the back row and make 8 more pieces that would represent the pawns for the front row. Maybe engrave the back of the checker pieces by 1/16 of the image from Rook to the King. Then cut 1/16 white and black acrylic chess pieces to glue down in the engraved checker pieces for a flat smooth finish. Time consuming, but look pretty sweet, I think. :)

Cut profiles of each piece and engrave. 2 per piece and glue them at right angles and you have a pretty good version.

Hi Troy! That was an amazing tutorial. I've been thinking about getting a Glowforge, you make it look so easy. I was wondering if I could commission a chess board from you. I would want my squares to be 1.5 inches with a 1/8th gap in between, but I also need to have the squares enclosed so that there's a 1/4 inch border around the squares. I don't necessarily need the mahogany and walnut squares or the checker pieces since I'm going to use the two pieces (base and the squares) glued together to make a mold. If you've seen the laser cut file for a scrabble board, the finished piece would look similar. The reason the squares have to be enclosed in the final piece is so that when I create the mold, the epoxy doesn't run off the sides. Is this something you would be willing to help me with?
