It's not annexed...North Cyprus has it's own independent government. The reason it is dependent on Turkey is thanks to the unfair and inhumane 50 year embargo on North Cyprus. ENOSIS was a call by Greek Cypriots for annexation with Greece, there would be no independent Greek Cypriot government if this was allowed to happen.

Both in cyprus and athens. The second reason is that the moment the north unilaterally declared independence in the 80s, it sent a message their aim was taksim, and not reunification, further voiding the guarantor right claim. Also the so called peace operation is a blatant lie. The civilian death, the raping, GC actually faced gunpoint and driven away from their houses, despite turkey saying oh if they wish they could stay. Im also not saying us GCs were innocent. Extremists did atrocities, and it will never be ok. But so will the invasion never be ok. What gives me hope is the hopeful extinction of these people. It’s hard to believe Giorgos and Mehmet who used to hang out every day at the coffee shop want to take each other’s life. Anyway we now have so many immigrants filipinos pakistanis eastern european, why would TC be a problem who we share background with? Anyway. Back to the 21st century, we want two things. Main point was Turkey broke ceasefire during peace talks, after democracy was restored in both cyprus and greece, voiding the guarantor rights. @@user-qj2bi3ph6p also enosis requires context. Pre-1960 we were fighting the British, not the TCs. Unfortunately TCs were used as human shields and we started killing each other and tensions rose. At the time enosis made sense, as the solution of getting rid of the British. When independence was given to us though, after the initial shock went away, we were fine with it. We consider Athen’s coup as an act of treason, and have a remembrance day every year. Even when democracy was restored in athens, their leader said ‘cyprus lies far’ when we asked for help, which further cemented our feeling of betrayal. Enosis makes no sense to us.

As I understand it from a Greek Cypriot who lost everything he owned when Turkish troops landed on the island, the divisiveness went both ways. Neither side truly supported a unified state. We can hope for unity, but it would require strength on both sides to come together without the anger and frustration of the past, and without ulterior motives. Even in the comments now, it’s easy to see groups supporting one side or the other. Perhaps it is too soon…
