just for other DIYers who may be attempting this: You can make the new framing right on top of the old framing, copying the size of lumber and placement while it is still in place and then take it and the old framing off, glue and screw the new luan to the new framing and then set it up where it will go. No guesswork.

This was really helpful. I have an old camperette. I rebuilt the rotted jack corners a few years back but I am now planning on cutting out the front wall and making the camper shorter to go from a 8 foot bed to a 6.5 foot bed. I haven't pulled it apart yet but it feels like it's just plywood on the front wall and bottom of cabover. After watching this it looks less intimidating.

Joel's hopefully helpful videos About random things: RV frigs never go bad unless the coils have been exposed to extreme corrosion. There is no compressor on a RV frig...simply works on expansion and contraction on amomnia-gas. Most common failure is the capillar tube which allows the propane to flow from simple controller to Pilot-Flame combo. When the frig is "getting" colder the Pilot light just get more gas from the controller. And on the older RV frigs without a electric- controller with just a (push over-ride button to get the Pilot light going) Pilot light/Flame will always work if he capillary tube is working. The capillary-tube is standard-issue for anything that operates on natural-gas or propane. Main purpose of capillary tube is safety, prevents gas from flowing if Pilot-light/ Flame, full Burner flame goes out. They are super cheap, few bucks from any appliance store, or home-improvement store, probably cheaper on-line to.....as SAE pipe threads are the Universal means in 99.99999% in gas/water pipe connections around the World.

Wow, thanks for this video. It's hard to find down to earth repairs on things on KZbin. You have put in time and your skill to create a usable functional space without throwing loads of money at it...

Thanks, this was my second camper repair, I tried to capture some of it to give others inspiration or help with ideas on how to fix something fairly major. I will be back soon with a continuation of when I finalized the exterior paint. I will be uploading the footage soon. Subscribe for more soon!

Nice work! As a retired 45 year Machinist and a renovator of three water damaged toy hauler travel trailers, I respect your quality of work! Now I have a 2001 Fleetwood Elkhorn non slide out truck cabover camper that I just bought and even though it has fiberglass outside walls and aluminum frame, the upper cabover window has flex seal white 2" tape all around the seal and I'm hopeful that when I peel that tape off I won't find water damage! If I do, I'll fix it just like the 3 other trailer's, #1, 20 foot roof replacement, #2. toy hauler #3, complete floor replacement by jacking the body up 3" all new floor joists & marine plywood, #3 only one front wall and 10SQFT of flooring. But I am getting tired! Wish me luck on this Elkhorn, I hope I don't need it!

Thanks! I recently changed jobs and was extremely busy at work to reorganize myself. Things are finally starting to return to a normal schedule and I have a lot of footage to include in my next video about this project. Hoping to restart creating and releasing more videos very soon. I have more to show…Good luck with your project!

Hey, get rid of that big front window on the bed and Selleck and board that up put some insulation on there and get rid of it because that window is impossible. There’s no drain holes to drain the water out from the condensation and stuff it’s best to get rid of that damn window. That’s what I’m gonna have to do.

I’m an rv technician apprentice and I just got an old 11 foot truck camper that I’m a bit apprehensive about fixing but I’m a little more optimistic after watching this. The main repairs it needs are repairing the roof in the rear section and the paneling on the lower part of the rear jacks where they attach on the corners and possibly where the tie down anchor points are. The fiberglass roof has not been maintained at all and has a small tear as well as a couple small holes hence the damage. I’ve sealed them off already but it’s got surface cracks all over it. If you read this I’d appreciate your suggestion about what to do about that.

Question would square aluminum tubing welded then the skin of the camper put on would be lighter and no wood to rot? Thinking on this have welder and a old slide in camper and alot of aluminum tubing!

34 minute mark. That's alclad 2024-T3 material used in the vent frame rebuild??? Angles and solid rivets in the corners? Are you a structures guy? Great job on the camper by the way. I've got an old 1976 camper I got for $150 bucks. It's in great shape except the front just like yours. Your vid helped give me some perspective on what I'm getting in too. Thanks. Watching from Kelowna British Columbia.

Yes your right, that’s Aircraft aluminum used on the vent frame. I’m more focused on AME work but do some minor structure work sometimes. Almost everything on this camper is recycled expired products from aviation. It’s completely sealed in PRC Sealant. And completely painted in PRC Desoto heat resistant primer and polyurethane paint. Good luck with your project!

If you have a bit of patience to scrape the old sealant to remove everything, putting it back together is not too bad. You will know what you have.

It’s hard to estimate exactly but the Luan sheets at the time we’re about 20$ each. So at least 4, I cut 2x4 in 2 to make the 2x2´s. maybe 10-15. About 4$ each, Some foam was left over from a renovation. Maybe 2 extra 4x8 sheets of foam. I used a lot of recycled expired consumables from aviation companies for sealants and paint. Time wise was a lot over free time during a winter. I don’t count time since I love working in my shop and consider it (man cave time). It’s kinda ironic that I’m actually camped out 1000 miles from home inside it right now writing this! So it was all worth it in the end..cheers

I’m using expired aviation sealant on this project but on my other RV I always liked using Dicor and once dry I cover the top areas with eternabond tape. Dicor will crack after a few years but if it’s covered with eternabond tape it will last decades without much attention.

Too bad they didn’t start making these campers with aluminum framing for strength and of course the wipe it out the score everything together but I don’t know I got a 94 camper. I’m not sure what it is but I don’t to me it seems like what I see what you have open up as soon as I got aluminum frame is so much better and cheaper.
