This week I'm taking you on a Truck Camper Tour of my 2004 Arctic Fox M860. I'm not a full-time KZbinr, a full-time RV'er or a full-time traveler. I'm just a regular guy busting my back working Monday through Friday so I can enjoy my weekends. A year and a half ago I decide to buy a GoPro and start documenting my travels. Since then, I have been introduced to some really cool viewers. I chat with so many of the same people every week in the comments you all are really starting to feel like friends. I know my traveling style is not for everyone. The upgrades I have done are to make weekend travel easy. With that said I do not buy expensive equipment seen on other channels. If that was the case, I would have to work more to pay for that stuff and I'd never have time off. I have a lot of van-life people, off grid living folks and fellow truck camping people who come along with me on my weekly travels. I have learned a lot from you all in the comments, so I really appreciate all the engagement. Next week the freezing temperatures are returning along with the possibility of a snowstorm or blizzard. We will see how those effects next week's video!

Kenny! Have been watching your videos for months since I discovered your channel! You inspired me to get an artic fox, just picked up a 2004 990 earlier this month. Still my have my old camper but will be selling soon, good old 01 Elk Horn 9T.. and a 1979 10ft Western Wilderness before that. In my Elkhorn and now in the Artic Fox (came without the generator) I installed an 8k diesel heater in the generator compartment. I have the duct coming inside by the door to vent 1 and it splits off and runs through the floor storage compartment to the 2nd vent on the other end ( 3" hole on each end of the compartment 😳) . Thinking about putting a plywood shelf on top of the tube running inside of the storage to put some storage above. I should make a video of it, haven't seen many instals for campers on youtube. Keep up the great videos! Always look forward to your uploads.

@@KennyOfAllTrades the lounge really makes the interior open up. The furnace and some other thing under the dinette you have to rearrange but you can make some storage under the lounge when you modify plus you have that outside access to deal with on the 1140, your model not sure what yours will entail.

Hi Kenny :) nice video explaining all the upgrades. I love your USB installs..very handy. I do use solar in the campers. I went with portable panels (120w ea) and 2 different size lifePo4 batteries..of Bluetti..don't bother with Jackery because they don't last near long as Bluetti for the money. LifePo4 Batts recharge like 2500-3000 times vs Jackery lithium style only 500 or so. Unfortunately, they are more expensive but WORTH IT in long run and I love the portability of this system. I even use it in my home daily to save on electric bill. Save your overtime and don't bother with the cheap ones. Your vids are super fun-- I look forward to your next!

Nice work, thanks for sharing!! All of your upgrades are well thought out!!! We have done many similar upgrades to our 811, with a couple minor differences. In most of our previous builds I installed a large inverter and transfer switch to power the entire unit, similar to what you have done. For the AF I chose a much smaller 1000w pure sine inverter and wired dedicated plugs to the bunk area under the TV and to the kitchen. I will be wiring one more to the rear of the camper as well. We found this setup to be more than enough for our 110 needs, and much easier on the power consumption. As far as Solar goes, it doesn't have to be expensive. You already have a good start to a system that would be more than ample for your needs. Keep an eye on CL, Marketplace etc, there is often good deals to be had on new or used panels. Depending on the size of your charge controller you can simply add an extra panel or two. If your existing panel uses 10AWG wire and MC4 connectors you can simply buy or build a couple Y connectors and extensions to add panels. An average 30amp PWM controller will generally handle around 400w, a 20a will handle around 250w. Of course each controller is different... I have used both PWM and MPPT controllers on systems 400w and under, and there isn't much difference in the amount of power that can be harvested from a small system, especially with the style of camping you do and location of the panels. Yes, this is a controversial subject, so others will probably disagree. We are currently running two panels with a total of 370w and a 30a PWM controller. During the summer we very seldom have to run the gen or plug in. Of course this is highly dependant on the amount of sun due to trees, clouds etc.. For the most part solar is hit or miss for the winter months for us in BC.. Like you, we use quiet generator in these times, instead of the noisy onboard Onan... As far as other upgrades go, one of my top exterior upgrades was a slide topper, as it keeps everything off the slide roof!!! I especially hated clearing snow and ice off of it! I really like that the slide roof is always dry when we pull it in during wet weather camping.

I feel like solar may turn out to be a disappointment for your application. I have a 6 kwh (500 ah @ 12v) battery bank with 525 watts of solar and 720 watts (60 amp @ 12v) DC-DC charging capability. I rarely drain by battery past 50% without driving for two days. Then when I do drive most of my charging comes from the DC-DC charger. The solar has only payed off when I've been parked for multiple days with good sun. You park in some places where solar charing might not be ideal and in a weekend where you move campsites, it sounds like you have the alternator capacity to charge up your batteries. Just something to keep in mind that solar isn't also the solution and not to get caught up in solar package deals with things you don't need.
@KennyOfAllTrades
@KennyOfAllTrades Жыл бұрын
You are completely right. Since I'm only out on 1 or 2 night adventures, I probably wouldn't see any payback from solar. It would be different if I was camping somewhere stationary for days on end, but that is not a reality for me.
@CPRebels21
@CPRebels21 Жыл бұрын
@@KennyOfAllTrades It'd be cool to see you be able to get rid of the front basket and the generators to switch over to running off of batteries but again the reality of a Minnesota summer would kick you in the butt when you need to run your AC. That said, if you see how a medium sized battery bank would benefit you, I'd invest in lipo batteries as you can instead of something like a jackery since you already have the inverters and chargers.

@@KennyOfAllTrades if you don't mind me ask you expect opinion since you have same k2500 as I do, did you ever install an intercooler? i know there isn't any room in this model with the rad, condenser, oil and trans cooler at front, do you think maybe it's good idea to install the intercooler btw the space of the electric fan and engine since am removing mechanical fan or under by skip plate under the bumper with some screen protector or some kind from rocks or so.
@KennyOfAllTrades
@KennyOfAllTrades Жыл бұрын
I think it would be an investment for power and longevity for your engine. Your intake temps would be lower, that would help increase fuel mileage and decrease operating temptures. (Which is great for the engine) You will definitely see an increase in HP because cooler air is more dense. It would be an upgrade with noticeable results. With that said it's also gonna be a costly upgrade. I imagine the intercooler and piping will cost around 800 to a grand? I'm not sure though...If you love the truck, plan on keeping it for awhile, and the body is in good shape, I would say go for it.

Man…I sure am getting a lot of roll over subs from your channel! So thanks for that buddy. Pretty crazy to see how YT finally threw u a bone and you’ve appeased the algorithmic gods! Also, I really need to pick your brain on that charging system you have from your alternator. It doesn’t look like a DC to DC charger and that’s pretty neat. Guess with AGM batteries, and a small bank at that, it’s not necessary to have one? I’m currently trying to figure out how to hook up a LIFEPO4 battleborn 270ah to mine and using a dc2dc charger, since it seems the most practical given my circumstances. But…man…still haven’t bit the bullet cause it’s so dang expensive.
@KennyOfAllTrades
@KennyOfAllTrades Жыл бұрын
The legend Down by the river is alive and well in my comment section! People want more of your videos...give the people what they want!! I haven't read up on DC to DC charges. I understand the need though. I don't think I would have needed to run that expensive heavy gage copper wire from my alternators if I had a DC to DC charger. This was my thinking. The Dual Alternators are capable of putting out 420 amps on the top end and 300 at idle. I have 2/0 wire from the alternators to the house batteries. I can turn on my 3000 watt inverter to run the rooftop AC and other 120v receptacles all day long, but the truck has to remain idling. The voltage to the house batteries at idle is 14.4 to 14.7 with no load on the inverter. It will drop to 13.8 to 14.1 when running the AC, microware or coffee pot. The only bad thing is idling emissions equipped trucks for extended periods of time isn't a good idea. So you have to figure out how to resolve that issue. 🤔
@downbytheriver501
@downbytheriver501 Жыл бұрын
Yeah I feel bad I haven’t been as dedicated to my channel as you have been! I guess I just find myself in a creativity block and really don’t want to put out half assed material. I’m my own worst critic, apparently buddy. That plus I’ve been lucky enough to have a good friend that’s allowed me to stay on his property so I’ve been doing a whole lot of “on grid” camping and I’m pretty sure my subs don’t want to see me in that light. Lastly, I have been scorn by the KZbin algorithmic gods for not staying consistent on my vids, as clearly seen by my last couple video’s view counts. It’s not that I care so much about views as I care that my subs know whether or not I am releasing content! I drop vids for them as much as I do it for myself, so it’s very discouraging to be scorn by the KZbin for not feeding them.
@downbytheriver501

Pretty awesome you basically turned your truck into a generator, too. As far as the emissions systems go… 😉 Having DEF freeze up in sub zero temps and/or being stranded somewhere because my truck gets thrown into limp mode due to a clogged EGR system for no reason other than it’s practically designed to fail led me to conclude that I cannot allow for a flawed system to risk my life. I’ve seen folks that are van lifing up in Alaska have their 140k sprinter vans go into limp mode and have to drive over 100 miles to the nearest dealership at 15 mph because their DEF froze and threw it into limp mode. To that I say, “no thank you.”

You are 100% right. My def heater went out three times, twice under warranty. The 3rd time was on me. At that time a small leak was found from the EGR cooler...thankfully I permanently resolved all those pesky issues.

Another splendid there Kenny! I think I’ve seen all your prior mod videos, but don’t recall your inverter/converter mod; so was nice to learn another new tidbit to put into my memory bank for the future. All you need now it to come up with some sort of mod to remind you of two things: Booster down Steps up 😊 Can’t wait to see what next weeks vid holds for us, is it next Tuesday yet? 😁 As always, stay safe out there….. P.S. Watch a recent vid of Mav ice fishing in MN a couple to three weeks ago. He didn’t catch anything…so you’re not alone 😝 😆 😂

It happens to the best of us! I'm still waiting to cross paths with Mav. We have both recored in the same grocery store multiole times. I drive within a few miles of his house everytime I'm on the North Shore. He seems like a really down to earth young man. Honestly though if I crossed paths with him I'd probably just do the normal Minnesota greeting..I'd give a head nod and say "ya think it's cold enouh" he say "it could be worse" I'd say " ya think, well see later then" He'd say "Okey dokey" That would be as close as I get to KZbin fame.

@@KennyOfAllTrades Haha, the normal Minnesota thing eh?! 😂 I’d love for you to cross paths with him! Hell, he might even have an extra Jackery for ya lol I agree, he does seem like really down to earth young man; his parents raised him right! The boy has done good for himself on YT and from what I can tell it hasn’t ballooned his head. He did a couple of collaboration vids with Steve (I think his last name is Willis) from Canada; you two in a collaboration vid would be killer and I’d bet your subs would skyrocket. Hey, speaking of collaborations, have you heard from Vic at all? He hasn’t put a vid out in a very long time and has me a bit worried something happened to him.

Unfortunately we haven't talked since that video where I called him on the phone. I lost my cell with all my contacts a month after that call....can u believe that? I sent him a few emails but he was busy with construction work at the time. He will show up in the comments every once in a while. He had some YT shorts of a new touring/Enduro style bike. I'm hoping he is somewhere exploring some beautiful mountains with the wind in his hair. Well maybe not in the winter....but you get what I'm saying.

Most excellent video, so much good and useful info! I've collected magnets for years from various places we've travelled, they add up fast. We hope to have our TC maybe by mid to late summer, many of the things you've done we'll keep in mind, they're so useful! We've already bought the rear view mirror camera based on your review, but haven't installed it yet and plan to add the Torklift steps right away. Do you have any kind of moisture barrier under your mattress? We're thinking of Froli, but will need to see what room we have. You've mentioned your mattress is very comfortable, is that the stock mattress, or did you replace it? Have you had any problems with moisture buildup, especially in winter? As always, enjoyed the video and we'll see ya next week!

The mattress is one of those Amazon foam beds. I think it was 6". Then I put a 3" topper on that. They are both zipped up in a mattress bag. I run a dehumidifier in the camper during the week in the winter on occasions to pull put moisture. If I spent extended time in the camper during the winter I would look into froli or hyper vent for under the bed.

@KennyOfAllTrades
@KennyOfAllTrades 9 ай бұрын
Absolutely. I carried this camper in a 2008 Silverado 2500. It had the 6.0L gas. I saw the diesel at the dealership one day. It was 3 years old with 90k miles. They were asking 28k and gave me a deal I couldn't refuse with trading in my old truck. The 6.0 gas did fine. The diesel 1-ton was a big upgrade. I think the Ford 7.3 gas would be a great replacement for a diesel.

I was talking with a friend about how rv and vanlife has changed. I wouldn't be able to afford the setup today. I traveled around with a Truck Camper for many years before the KZbin channel, mainly because it was an inexpensive way to go on a road trip. That's not the case anymore. Plus campgrounds are crowed and campsite fees are comming close Super 8 Motel prices. A compact car and midrange price hotel would be more affordable today. The nice thing about the truck camper is finding remote spots.
