What do you think? Truck camper or camper van? We always say, there is no perfect rig. Or is there?
@roberts.14006 ай бұрын
Gotta say a truck camper is the way to go ... At least for my particular wants and needs. I'm currently in the market for a new truck so there's that, it makes much more sense to buy the camper to add to the truck instead of buying a Class B or C and still need a vehicle as my daily drive ... Also, I'd like to add that I've been enjoying your channel and your content 🌻

Funnily enough - My wife and I are about to go into the truck camper game. I really wanted a camper van for the longest time, but honestly for the size of camper we want.. The truck camper is going to be cheaper. I agree with the truck camper being able to be removed. That makes it WAYYYY better.

Thank you so much for the kind words! And yes, you're absolutely right, each additional engine you own is money out of pocket in maintenance and registration, etc. And there is always a camper to fit on whatever truck your heart desires, so it's kind of a win-win!
@WorldBrilliant6 ай бұрын
Yes, and especially for couples the truck camper is a game-changer. It gives you so much more space and flexibility on the road. We fight SO much less in the truck camper than we did with the van. lol

Excellent points. Most of the advantages of a truck camper are the same for trailers. The biggest pro to camper vans is being able to drive away without going outside.
@WorldBrilliant6 ай бұрын
True, and we do get that a lot. People want to not have to go outside. Which I get, but for us it's not that big of a deal given all of the other perks that come with being able to remove it entirely. We did the trailer thing for a while, but for full-time living, it was really restrictive in terms of where we could go, where we could park. We mostly stealth camp, and we find some amazing places that a trailer cannot go. So being able to only take up one parking space was a big must-have on our list, as well as the off-road capabilities :)
@jaytabac65255 ай бұрын
just sold my camper and truck to convert a sprinter. i wanted to go stealth, save gas, easy parking, stay in friends' driveway, easier in urban areas and more off-road capabilities. love them both.

I absolutely loved my truck camper. Having the bed over the cab made it feel so much more spacious compared to my van. Although I bought it with the thought I would separate the camper from the truck, I never actually did in all the years I owned it. If it weren't for my health issues and the need for a vehicle without constant stair climbing, I would have kept the truck camper. The biggest advantage of the van for me is the ability to move from the front to the back without stepping outside. My wife doesn't come along on my trips. If she did, I would get a small trailer for her to stay in, so she wouldn't be disturbed when I get up early or stay out late for photography. If I were living in my vehicle full-time I may consider a truck & Camper, I would appreciate the flexibility of being able to detach the camper from the truck in case the truck needed major repairs. If you want a truck camper that does not leak (as bad) look at Northern Lite or Bigfoot.

Yeah, you're right, the stairs and accessing the cabover bed can be prohibitive for folks with mobility issues. That's a great point. And I never thought about towing another camper behind the van! That's an interesting idea! And yeah, we had to put our van in the shop once for two weeks...that was an insane unexpected hotel bill on top of the repairs! That was the point at which we started exploring other options. We love the Northern Lite full fiberglass shell campers. Yes. Someday, we will get one of those. Happy travels to you!

Many points you mentioned are the reason im heavily leaning towards a truck camper. Some other reasons are: - better off-road capability of a truck. No van has true 4x4 capabilities. Its just not made for that, and when you’re in difficult terrain and the wheels block bc the electronics suck you can be in huge trouble.Even if you don’t want to do crazy offroading, with a truck you can easily stand on a beach without getting stuck. And you have more ground clearance. - longetivity: a good truck camper will outlive several cars if maintained well. - better insulation: with a van you live in a metal box, vs a camper with a specific outer shell designed for the purpose of living in it.

Separating the TC from truck is nice - only if it is important to you 4*4 is nice - only if it is important to you So it is ALL relative & YMMV. Your dime... I had a TC on a 4*4 f250. ( over a 1.5 years I slept in it for 30 days total - so I gave it a chance to prove itself) I now have a self built Transit van 250 for the last 7 years (I slept in it for 25 months to date- so NOT full time - not interested in full time only 3-5 month adventures) & I continue to modify and tweak it to make it just a little bit better - With Great results and it make me like it better. I hated the TC - 2 stars 👍I love the Van - 9 stars👍

That's true! And it sounds like you have the skill set to adjust things as you go. I definitely do not. lol so I appreciated having it already done to my liking. Plus, since we travel as a couple and live in the camper full-time, a van just didn't work for us that well.
@questioner15966 ай бұрын
One advantage to a campervan is the ability to tow a trailer as well, so you could bring a spare car/motorcycle with you.
@WorldBrilliant6 ай бұрын
You can do that with a truck camper as well :)
@Ohiostategenerationx6 ай бұрын
Yeah I don't understand this statement. You can do the exact same thing with a truck camper as well.
@questioner15966 ай бұрын
It depends on the truck camper. Some campers have back doors that would be incompatible with hitched trailers or accessories. Some extend so far beyond the back bumper that a draw bar wouldn't reach.
@Ohiostategenerationx6 ай бұрын
@@questioner1596 yeah that can be true but most of them would still allow room to use a towing set up.
@questioner15966 ай бұрын
@@Ohiostategenerationx my reason for pointing this out is that can negate one of the downsides of the camper van - if you tow a second car with you the van can be left parked at the campsite while the car is used for errands.

Where do you buy a truck camper?
@creativ3vision6 ай бұрын
I’m pretty sure you can easily find out by simply Googling it : )
@WorldBrilliant6 ай бұрын
That is a great question, and I can do a future video on that more in-depth. But to get you started...We found ours on Facebook Marketplace. That seems to be a common place to list most things anymore. If you're willing to travel to find one (not sure where you are located), there are a lot of truck campers in Arizona-Nevada-California for sale. That seems to be a hot spot for them, and at decent prices too. Hope that helps!

WoW, 8mpg, nearly fell over :) We get close to 40 UK mpg in our Fiat Ducato based MH with 9 speed auto gearbox. I do like the Truck Camper concept, but then would it make sense to have a caravan?
@WorldBrilliant6 ай бұрын
Hey there UK friends! You guys have a whoole awesome range of options that we do not, I'm super jealous haha. We've looked at importing one, but can't afford that just yet. I wish the US would catch up.. Ah, the amazing travels we would have at 40mpg lol

As soon as she compared the cost of a professionally built out van to a new truck camper she lost me. The truck camper needs a truck! What does that cost? $75,000? Now the cost of these 2 different "homes" isn't so different. Vans are so popular because they get good gas mileage. If you can live with 8 MPG then get a school bus for even more room to move than a truck camper.
@thetravelingveteran5 ай бұрын
It's evident you DIDNT want the video and are a van lifer and felt trigger by one person's personal preference 🤣🤣 Truck campers can be removed, a van is stuck where you park and set up. Trucks have better off road clearance. Trucks can be sold easier if you want to get a different truck. Truck campers are easier to sell, trade in, etc when you are done or want something different. Van builds, especially custom builds, are harder to sell. It has to be exactly what someone wants. Please choose trucks over a giant bus for mobility as well. Easier to get a 4x4 truck into smaller places over a bus and gives you more options for parking and camping areas. Also, many trucks with campers get better gas mileage than that.
