My dog and I hike into the woods with our gear on a small sled to tent & tarp camp. Some of my earliest memorys are of camping with the family. Back in the 80s, I got out of prison after a shory stay, with no car, job, or tools. I lived on the northern Ohio woods with nothing but my dog all winter. I built a shelter with disguarded construction materials, and we hunted to save money to buy tools. It was the best time of my life. By spring, I had all my tools and rejoined the world as an Electrician. No food stamps or helpless victim crap. Mother Nature will teach the best of us to be humble before her beauty and power. I am 62yr old now, have another well loved dog at my feet as I type this, and I stayed humble and law abiding to this day. The outdoor life is grand.

@no candy Bringing up the drawbacks of his setup, the inverter inefficiency and the voltage drop, doesn't help you. I would not run his setup. He's using a starting battery as a trickle load, he's be better off with a AGM solar panel type deep cycle battery. If it were me I'd ditch using electricity for heat as you are essentially shorting resistive materials to make heat. I'd stick to just lights on a battery. I'd absolutely want to reserve the starting battery for starting especially in winter. Perhaps a wood stove and water hose with check valve for heat.

I just want to clarify that if I had gotten the heater to work, I was only going to turn it on for a few minutes before I went to bed and again for a few minutes in the morning. My battery would only be able to run it for so long before dying. I don't think I made that clear in the video. I could have just plugged into my buddies cabin outlets by his garage, but I wanted to be self-reliant in this trial because I may not always be camping where I have access to outlets. My battery is a Duralast Platinum AGM battery that has starting power and deep cycle capability so I've got more battery capacity than a normal lead acid battery would have. If you'd like to learn more about my truck setup, check out my other videos if you haven't already. Thanks!

Some cold weather camping tips... I am one of the scout coordinators for my sons troop. >Wool clothing layers, or polar fleece if you are allergic to wool, hat gloves, socks are a must... definitely socks. >Eat WELL and drink water before going to sleep. The food you consume is your furnace for the night and will keep your warmer than an empty stomach. Fatty calories and carbs work best. Water aids digestion and maximizes the bodies ability to turn calories into energy. >0 Degree down sleeping bag, toss over a down quilt if you need backup >Thermarest "R" value sleeping pad. I prefer air pads but there are foam self inflatables that may suit you better. >Reflectix and some adhesive velcro to insulate your windows. >I would also invest in a second battery for your living quarters, that way you dont dump your main vehicle battery. >As you discovered getting out and pee-ing in the snow / rain SUX... get yourself a "pee bottle". Just a generic plastic capped bottle you can whizz in at night. Dump it out the window and rinse with water. Gross but its FAR better than getting out of the shelter to drain your weasel. Cool vid though and good luck!!

One thing to consider for next time when the temps will be low is an electric blanket in the sleeping bag. I've tent camped before in sub freezing temps and used a portable inverter with small motorcyle type battery to power the blanket and it was great. Or use an electric heating pad at your feet inside the sleeping bag. If I had to guess I'd say the start up wattage of your electric heater is well over the inverter. The operating load is likely what was listed on the box.

Here's a couple of suggestions from someone who has spent a lot of time camping in the winter. Get yourself a UCO candle lantern or two and hang or mount them in a convenient spot. They give off heat and light and don't wear your batteries down, fire them up before you go to bed and before you get up to take the chill out of undressing/dressing. Also, get an empty 1quart Gatoraid bottle with cap and you will never have to get out during the night again. I recommend some simulated practice to get the procedure down first.

Run dual batteries. I run dual with an isolator wired to a 4000 watt inverter. The set up will run your heater for about 3 hours without draining the starter battery. Also, get yourself an remote starter. Before you go to sleep open that window between the cab and the sleep spot and turn your heater to high fan and hot temp. When the battery gets too low to run the heater you can start the truck, charge it up AND, utilize the heat from the truck heater. Good luck..

@alickswiden715 жыл бұрын
@@Puuha1 reasonable? Why do natural occurrences need to be reasonable? They don't. Water is just like anything else, it freezes and boils at specific temperatures. It does not need to be 0 or 100 for either. It Is not unreasonable that it freezes at 32 F and boils at 212 F. Not even that hard to memorize the boiling point, not that it matters in daily life. If you're cooking, it boils when it fucking boils. If you're concerned about the temp of a certain day or days, freezes at 32. It's not hard to memorize, and it does not need to make sense. What DOES make sense is using the scale that is nearly twice as accurate. Using metric for distance and weight is entirely subjective, you can assign any given weight or distance a given quantity and then go from there, whatever. We get used to that and use that as rough estimations in everyday life. Temperature is a real, physical thing regardless of what values we assign to it. Water freezes at one point whether you call it 0 or 32 or 50,000 degrees. But if Fahrenheight is nearly twice as accurate, and temperature is something entirely out of your control yet relevant to everyday life, why the actual fuck would you not use the one that is the most accurate????? It does not need to "make sense" or be "reasonable" or have a scale divisible by 10's. Fuck celcius. And Kelvin.

Great setup! I use my Tacoma with a Snugtop shell to snow camp as well. I looked at the idea of a 12v heater and separate deep cycle battery to run one (so I don't run down my truck battery) but I could not find a decent rated heater... they all had a lot of bad ratings. I have a Mr Buddy but it is too much heat for such a small area so I bought a Coleman SportCat which is perfect Then I added propane and CO sensors to stay safe and crack the slider window open for fresh air. CO sensor uses batteries and propane one connects to 12v and uses about 1/2 amp so I disconnect it as soon as I get up. What I don't have that I like about your setup is the bed platform with storage underneath. EDIT: Coleman doesn't seem to make the SportCat anymore. I came across a lawsuit for two hunters who died from CO poisoning so maybe Coleman bailed on the liability factor and cost to add a oxygen depletion sensor like the Mr Buddy has.

As someone who has lived in his truck through 3 northern (North Dakota, Minnesota, and Indiana) winters, get a really good sleeping bag (mine is certified to -25F) combined with a mylar rescue blanket for when it dips below that works great. Also, for power if a heater is a must, solar panels mounted to the top of your capper or a split off of your alternator and a separate dual battery setup in your bed should get you roughly 8 hours of usable juice when allowed to charge fully so your heater would run all night without effecting the starter battery. And finally, as others have said, an empty bottle is the best bathroom you can have in the morning. I personally use a gallon jug just because it eliminates the possibility of spills. Best of luck in the future and when all is said and done, your rig can be setup for a very successful winter camp for less than $1000!

Using the 20 amp controller also by AllPowers (in case I ever wanted to expand my system), both batteries are either fully charged or mostly charged in 8 hours from being mostly discharged. Glad you found something useful here! Happy trails!

I have the same rig but mine has a rack over the topper.. when freezing I cover the topper or shell with a cheap tarp and use clamps to hold it in place. You could guy out the ends to extend the shelter. Really keeps the cold at bay with the air gap.. Also for extra heat, free heat, I pull a few hot rocks from my camp fire and place them in a small wooden tray Like 10x15 inches. Just a few hot rocks will keep me warm for an hour or two. Always keep your Windows cracked open for fresh air. Leave the starter battery alone, nothing kills a starter battery faster then constant drawing power to low levels. Oh and an empty wide mouth bottle, to avoid having to leave your warm shelter to pee. Happy camping.

If you want to set up your inverter right they sell everything you need at truck stops/like Pilot and such. You are correct about the cable that goes from the battery to the inverter. The farther away it is and the more power you need a heavier gauge. Also your inverter is rated for 300w continuous with a 600w peak. Most items have a very high peak when they start up. It’s always best to double the continuous for whatever your running. That way it doesn’t over heat. They catch on fire easy. Cobra makes a good brand. I’ve been running 5000 watt cobra inverter in my Peterbilt. That lets me run a mini fridge all the time and my tv and PS4, I can run cookers and stuff. If you want to cook with inverter, crock pots are the best. Low watt and good heat. Also you have to watch what you run on Direct Current. Things like a PS4 run on a certain sine wave. So if your inverter pluses our power then it will shut on and off or dim. Different waves of power frequencies can mess up your stuff when you run it off an inverter. If I was you, I’d put two car batteries connected to each other in the bed of the truck to use for power, you can connect the positive terminal to your truck with a switch then when you are driving your alternator will charge your batteries. Hit the switch to shut them off from your truck battery. Then it isn’t a big deal if you drain those. You can still drive away. Good video. Thanks for sharing. Big fan of making the best of living on the road in a small space. Especially as someone driving an 18 wheeler.

Tip - Next time, set up a 2 or 3 wick canister candle to burn overnight. Not the hazard of CO2, won't drain battery, It will eat up the moisture that your breath puts off, and will do a good job of raising the "temp feel" in that cab. (high moisture = clammy skin = colder feel to the body) I would not follow that advise of Mr Buddy / Propane in that small of an area....ya might be sleeping alot longer than planned (like forever).

Well the top has about 2 inches of insulation on it along with the carpeted covering on the entire interior of the shell. The windows sure could use some insulation though. I think that's something I would look into if I were going to be living in my truck full time in weather like this. But for short weekend trips, I can deal with lack of insulation for a night or two.

Okay I've been living off grid full time for 6 years now. In a small trailer, but I lived in Colorado for a season in Estes Park in an F-150 here's a tip I learned that saved my butt more than once works in the summertime and the winter time. Go to Home Depot for about $20 you can purchase bubble insulation the kind that goes around your water heater in your house. You can stick it to the camper and the bed of the truck or anything with velcro adhesive strips or 3M Adhesive spray. This works fantastic you can also cut it to size to fit your windows or slightly larger then put it in your windows in the summer time on the sunny side and it will block the heat from escaping. Put it on all your windows at night in the winter time and it will block the heat from escaping and cold air from coming in. This is cheap but highly effective. Think of it this way it's the same stuff that you use to block the sun on the windshield of your vehicle.

Definitely get a buddy heater. The base model will literally run you out of a truck. But I suggest getting the hunting buddy. It has a built in carbon monoxide detector that will cut the gas and shut off automatically if it senses high levels. But I’ve used mine many many times in a three person hunting blind for hours on end with no problems or odors. Just have to keep an eye on the tank freezing. Lol.

I've slept in my pickup a couple times. 03 Duramax Diesel. After driving and doing some errands I let it idle for awhile while it was still warm and with heat on high, set towards face and feet, fan on high, with re-circulation and sometimes let it idle while sleeping but mostly shut it off before I went to sleep. Kept me plenty warm then in the morning when it was below zero I'd cycle the glow plugs twice and she'd crank right over and fire. Not as worried of battery drainage because 2 batteries. Am also able to get a second alternator and run directly to separate batteries if I wanted to

I use to work on the road escorting oversized loads. I would sleep in the back of my truck at night to save my daily hotel allowance and get more sleep by staying with the load. I kept a 2500 watt generator with which in the summer would run my air conditioner and space heater in the winter. But while the heater put out some good heat the biggest problem I had staying warm was the same problem you had, the windows let out too much heat and would frost over. To get around that I went Walmart and got those windshield cover that you use to keep heat out on a sunny day. I cut them to size for each window and with Velcro command strips so I could put them on and take them off easily. That kept me so warm I once slept in minus 20 weather in just shorts and T-shirt’s. Don’t use propane heaters.

I can't tell if you have a full passage from inside your truck to the back but if you do you can get a remote auto start on your truck and can start it up with the heater on to warm up. Also they have these pee bottles they sell at Walmart that has lids you can use at night or whenever you actually need one. Don't know how you feel about solar but harbor freight has a portable set up 100 watt with battery etc.... that you can charge the battery during the day and use it for your electric heater. I think it's like $189 and they have a pretty quite generator that you can use to charge an AGM battery. Just a few thoughts. I sleep in my van in the mountains on the weekends and ski during the day without a heater (never needed it) but in the morning I turn my engine and heater on for like 5 minutes.

you should have a separate battery for the inside for your truck, so that you don't kill your starter battery. the most common thing that people will do is they will have a charger controller hooked to their battery and they will throw a solar panel on the roof, of they will hook the battery to their alternator and charge it while they drive.
@ElectronicsForFun6 жыл бұрын
l try to stay away from generators for a few reasons. #1 they need to be maintained, they need to be refueled and they also need to be repaired every now and then just like a car engine. also l don't want to stand out in the snow mixing 2 stroke gas for my cheap harbor freight generator. #2 they are noisy which can get annoying after awhile, or piss off your neighbors if you're not camping in a secluded area. and #3 they burn gas which means unless they have a really good emissions control system they are going to make your camp smell after they have been running for awhile.

As I mentioned in your newer video, either a electric blanket would work perfectly or they have solar powered heaters for chicken coops. Runs at about 130°F. No metal coils or open flame to cause fire or carbon monoxide concerns. And you won't have to rely on your trucks thin gauge wiring. Also you probably could run a heavy duty extension cord from your inverter attached to the battery then run it to the back of your truck in the future.

Tim Hall hope this isn’t a dumb question but where exactly do you place your heater? I have mattress covering the entire bed of my truck so I’m thinking about making a stand that attaches to the lip of my camper shell and putting the heater on that (away from the mattress fabric). Also, how much do you crack open the windows for ventilation? Or do you leave them shut? I just want to make sure I stay safe as possible. By the way I have a Mr. Buddy propane heater.
@72timhall6 жыл бұрын
+Joey Lopez I found a clamp from a fire extinguisher holder that fits around a propane bottle . Heaters draw a lot of juice. Getting a system that works well enough in the cold can get expensive. Ideally you will want a second battery wired from your car battery with a battery isolator. That will keep your second battery charging while you drive, but keep your primary battery from draining (your truck will start later). Harbor Freight sells 2000W inverters on sale sometimes for less than $150. With some thick gauge wire from home depot, it will work. In addition, its not easy insulating a truck bed either, but obviously that would help too. If you take up surfing instead, you’d have an awesome set up for parking by the beach the way your truck is. Thanks for the vid, its a cool little truck you have.

@arlenewolf52606 жыл бұрын
Nice try. The inverter is rated for 300 watt SURGE, It probably will only do continuous duty at about 50% load (150 watts). Also you will need like 6 or 4 gauge wire (like jumper cable thickness to carry the proper load) to go 10 -15 feet (wire from a welding shop is the best). You can do this by adding a quality second battery (deep cycle) and a Battery Isolater (you can get the isolators at RV shops / dealers) they will isolate the second battery letting you run the load on the second battery and isolate the starting battery from your load keeping the starting battery charged (so you wont get stuck). When the truck is running the isolator will allow both battery's to charge. Try getting a 600 or a 1000 watt inverter you can get them at truck stops. They will only draw a lot if the load is high, otherwise they will run just fine. Van dwellers (people that live in their vehicles) do this a lot, it works great.
