As the student in the video here is my very long POV. (Keep in mind I’m a total noob, so my truck shifting comments might not be even 70% accurate). I started driving manual at 13 on a Renault and VW bus, I’ve been driving probably 60% of my lifetime mileage with manuals and still ride a motorcycle where I can do clutchless shifting (not a habit but I can do it) The problem I think I have is muscle memory. You are taught in a car to always fully engage the clutch, shift quickly in one movement and almost toss the shifter into gear. From first to second you usually don’t let go of the shifter and the pattern is mostly a standard “H” with a hard gate on the right and spring gate for reversing on the left. If you want to shift down you let go of the throttle press the clutch and shift it from gear to neutral to gear without ever stopping. The clutch is soft, usually hydraulic or with a very soft spring and in a very ergonomic position. The double clutch is similar to a car. But it is not the same The clutch is hard. Think early 70s Ford pickup. the shift points are closer than anything in a pickup, RPM’s are very, very low. You shift from third to fourth at 1200 RPM, if you’re not within maybe the 200 RPM range it grinds. You have to engage the clutch fully only when stopped, and the clutch is not at an even height with the brake (stroke is at least 40% longer than a car). When you double clutch you only press it in less than an inch and your foot is floating in the air, so after 10 or so movements you start to lose strength and at least I tend to compensate by pushing harder and therefore further (this is subconsciously), in the split second you realize it, you are at the wrong RPM and grinding. When you downshift in a car you let go of the throttle and shift. In the truck you tap the clutch, take it to neutral, release the clutch, rev it up a few hundred RPM’s then tap the clutch again as you shift down. This is easier said than done. (Your muscle memory says “if you are slowing down why are you trying to accelerate”) Shifting from fifth to sixth involves selecting the high gear lever first. Clutching to neutral, moving the shifter past a spring mounted gate and down to sixth. (Pattern in a car would be like shifting from 4th to reverse past a spring gate) again muscle memory in a car tells you “you are shifting the wrong direction for a higher gear” the millisecond where you realize it, you already missed the RPM’s and are grinding. As somebody else mentioned, in a car you seat yourself to get a good view of the road. In the truck you do it to get a better ergonomic position for the pedals (I’m 1.82M/5’11) so by getting high up for a good view off the hood my legs position was bad (Junior already corrected me on that) In my specific case, my experience knowing how to shift in a car for 37 years is actually a negative. I’ve got a great and PATIENT teacher who I’m confident will whip me into shape, and I look forward to learning as much as I can.

Traffic jams while you are trying to reach your drop or pickup, bad roads, people passing you, then cutting right in front of you to take a get off ramp, bad directions from your dispatch (Qualcomm and GPS has pretty much taken care of this) , any one of these can be frustrating if you let it. @darinruddock3394
@darinruddock3394 4 ай бұрын
Yes, that represents a more realistic rhythm for shifting. It’s a slow rhythm that allows these massive flywheels to slow down so that the engine and tranny are at the same pace for the higher gear. Same thing with downshifting but your adding throttle to slowly get that engine up to speed to match the pace of the lower gear.

Double clutching is hard. Your left foot and right hand have to work together in perfect timing. Plus you have to remember what gear you're in, focus on what what gear you have go into next, all while monitoring your speed, RPMs, lights, traffic, white and yellow lines, braking distance, etc. Not an easy task.

It sounds like every single one of your trainers shouldn't be trainers. Yelling, screaming, getting frustrated is not the way to teach. That's also a reason in my opinion why many students refuse to or have severe apprehension to driving a manual. Some trainers have the training mentality. Some do not. The same goes for trainees.

As someone that learnt non synchro a bit over a year ago, you're confusing him by adding too many variables at once. Just teach him to shift at set RPMs (1200 down, 1500 up or whatever the optimal range is for the truck) and not worry about what gear is what speed at first. Once he learns how to shift without thinking about it, then add in the concept of X gear for X speed.

Boy this took me back. Dad (God rest him) had an HVAC business I worked for during summers as a kid. At the time, I thought I was "Ayrton Senna" the way I could boss around my RX-7's 5 speed. Well... day 1 driving the HVAC van... it was a "three-on-the-tree" shifter. Brought this F1 driver right back down to earth. I shifted it so bad, I locked up the tranny (or maybe it was just ready to quit... I don't know) my first week driving it. Anyways, Junior is a patient teacher. Hope his student reads the good comments here and sticks with it. Everybody is new at the beginning.

Junior, many people watching the videos may have never (or limited experience with manual). Could you film yourself doing some shifting at the beginning of these student videos for about 30 seconds or so; maybe talking through some of the process as you do it before having the student take over? It would provide some point of reference while watching the student as they struggle through the process. Great videos btw. cheers.

@@HPX584 to be honest at that point you kind of know how to turn well with a trailer and you’re trailers empty. So you don’t have to worry about bogging down the engine if you’re in the wrong gear or not great with the clutch. The main thing I was worried about was the maneuverability because I wasn’t as good at backing up. You’ll get it don’t worry, as soon as everything clicks in your mind about driving a truck you’ll be fine. Lol

I did 400,000 miles in a car with a five speed manual transmission and about 30,000 on a motorcycle before I tried trucking. I think the experience helped a lot, but a non-synchomesh transmission was still something tricky. Double clutching , clutch braking,and pedals too far apart to heel/toe ?! Hearing and feeling how much to blip the throttle when downshifting got a big smile out of my trainer. The time on the sport bike made me a natural in a truck. The most useful experience I had before the truck, was backing up trailers at the lake for the rich guys with big boats who couldn't handle their pickups in reverse with a trailer. I made $5 a shot backing boats down the ramp when I was 15 and I made enough to buy my first car over three summers. As a result, backing up a trailer feels very natural to me. Pro Tips... Start with your hands at the bottom of the steering wheel to develop an intuition for how the trailer will react. The inputs are the same for a big truck...they are just bigger. If you buy a car or truck with a manual transmission, there will be very few kids who will know how to steal it. You can park in the city and the car thieves will just walk right on by.

Double-cluching is very easy. Get the rpms to 1500 and double stab the clutch quickly before your rpms get to 1000 rpms. While you use two quick jab steps (only going down two inches into clutch); shift to neutral then shift to gear. Do it quickly before the needle drops too far and you will never grind a gear.

I have helped a few guys learn the clutching by having them announce the simple process, "clutch out of 1st", (release), "clutch in to 2nd". It helped the guys I helped. They got trained at the cheapie training truck scool. It's sad when those guys pay that much and you teach them it's about 5 mph/gear for the lower set of gears, flip to the upper set then 10mph/gears, and they say WOW and it's the stuff they should have learned it in the first hour behind the wheel. Have a good day Junior.

These dinosaur manual transmissions are all going to the junkyard soon. The computers are much more effective than any driver out there. Autos are giving drivers more time for drivers to focus on driving than shifting. These old trucks were a fun drive through.

I still don’t understand why you have to learn the double clutch crap. When I got my class a in 2009 they did it then too, but when I started at a job hauling fuel using a 13 speed I double clutched once and my trainer told me to never ever do it again lol, he even said it was against company policy. So from that day on, I’ve always floated up and down with the engine brake on hi. But this video did bring back some good memories 😅

I know but if they take their test in an automatic then they get the restriction on their CDL and can not drive a manual unless they retake the state driving exam in a manual, seems to me you would go to a school and take it on a manual or in a big company situation they should teach drivers to drive manual even if they plan on giving them an automatic, that way if their truck brakes down and the other choice is a manual no harm no foul. That’s just my take

Good job junior.Guys you are hearing that manuals are being done away with in this industry. Not true. Many companies not only have both transmissions there are some that only have manuals. Learn how to drive the manual because if you become an owner operator sticks are cheaper,better for hauling heavy freight,and more reliable.Being able to drive a manual gives you more job options. I trained on a 10 speed Mack in school. Now I drive a 13 speed Freightliner than is a blast to drive.
