You really need to invest in a CB Radio,, At any Truck Stop you can call for a driver to hook you up with a free shower.. A CB is key to keeping up with what is going on up ahead of you all the time.

We are working on updating the house we have now and then we are selling it to be able to buy our RV...But we are planning to use LA Fitness as spa since they have pools, hot tubs, saunas, and showers...if you can get a membership you will be able to have a great time....Good luck...J

I got two handhelds, One is just a standard AM CB (Midland 75-822) like the truckers use. And a FM Ham radio (Baofeng UV-5RA) I can tune to the local police dispatch, or other repeaters (but if you get a ham radio do not transmit without a licence unless you're at risk of dying or someone else is. lol)

Hey Eric. I am lovin all these videos. I started from the first episode about 4 days ago and just now made it to your new OUTRO video. Jax is such an AWESOME cat. So adorable. I work at a taco restaurant in South Beach, Florida, and i ACTUALLY Chromecast your videos on the big screen tv for me and all the tourist to enjoy while they eat. So everyone has tacos, BEER and the Jax-n-Eric show. Pretty cool My buddy and i will be partaking in this similar journey later this year, but in a bus. So maybe we will see ya out there and we can knock back some cold ones (plus JÄGER) while the burgers and dogs simmer over the flames. So keep on truckin (""VANNIN""), stay safe, and may God keep abundantly blessing your travels

You can also refill those jugs from a desalinized water dispenser at many grocery stores. Most all the Publix stores I've been at in Florida have them. Cost 30 cents a gallon and the water is very pure. I ran a gallon through my sisters distiller and it left no deposits, indicating very pure water.

When I was on the road I gave free showers to anyone who came up and asked. I would get a free shower everytime I would fuel up. Truckers have tons of free showers built up offter to buy them a coffee or drink in trade for a shower using their rewards card . Most will just let you have one for free like I did

Feel free to double check this with Billy: batteries can have something called a 'surface charge' that is misleading. To properly test the charge state of the battery bank you should put it under a load for a few minutes and then measure the voltage. Otherwise, you could be seeing the voltage that the charger was at before it switched to maintain or trickle charge mode. ( Maybe you already know this but it is good public info ) PS - you might find a busty truck driver chick to split the cost of those showers: $5.50 + antibiotics.

While boondocking, I'd use truck stops to shower because of two main reasons: RV limited water supply and propane. I only have a 35 gal fresh water tank and a 20 gal black water tank, and a 7 1/2 gal propane tank. Taking navy showers, I can take about 4-5 showers a week before I either run out of fresh water or holding tank gets full (including usage from toilet and sinks.) Propane usage for water heater makes tank last only a week. By using truck stops a few times a week, I can double or triple the days before I have to get more water, dump tanks, or refill propane. Using truck stops is also cheaper in some places then campgrounds and most the time it's a safe place to overnight (except in West Memphis, AR.) The biggest advantage I think is unlimited hot water. When I purchase a shower, I bring in my dirty dishes to wash, take my time to shave, and just lay under the shower head at full blast. I think I fell asleep under them more than a few times to be honest.

Bars can be open though. Another town I lived in had the same thing but changed it in the late 70's or early 80's. People still get beer on Saturday but stock up to carry through Sunday. Being a nerd and the son of an electrical engineer, I am compelled to chime in regarding the measurement of electrical current. (Before I go any further, please know that I’m not dissing anybody, least of all Eric, whose videos I really enjoy. I’m just trying to be helpful and to educate people on how electricity is measured and how it works. It’s really not complicated if it’s explained correctly. It’s just that no one ever explains it correctly. They don’t teach this stuff in school. But they *_should._*) Electrical current is like water flowing through a pipe, except that it’s electrons flowing through a wire. It’s measured in coulombs per second, with a coulomb being about 6.2 million trillion electrons. Of course nobody ever actually says “coulombs per second”, they just say “amperes” (or “amps”), which is what coulombs per second *_is._* But since the term “ampere” already incorporates the concept of time (i.e., coulombs per second), it makes no sense to incorporate an additional time parameter like “per hour”. It just doesn’t make any sense (unless you’re talking about a _rate of CHANGE of current,_ but that’s extremely rare). Using the water flow analogy, it would be like saying a water hose carries four gallons per minute per hour. Or that you're cruising along the freeway at 65 miles per hour per hour. So it’s just “amps”, *not* “amps per hour”. Same thing with watts. Sometimes I hear people talking about “watts per hour” (or “kilowatts per hour”) and it’s equally wrong. A watt is a unit of power, equal to one joule of energy per second. So just as you wouldn’t say “60 joules per second per hour”, you don’t say “60 watts per hour” - it’s just 60 watts. Period. Now back to your regularly scheduled programming....
@Propelled
@Propelled 5 жыл бұрын
Captain Quirk , that is true, but it does extrapolate the stored electricity. An amp is a momentary reading, a statement if flow. A sustained, metered amp flow for an hour (or any amount of time) speaks to and quantifies the depletion from storage or usage when purchasing those electrons.

Dude, I drove BIG trucks for many years, and I always avoided nasty ass truck stop showers at any cost. I mastered the art of bucket baths right inside of my truck, using a 1 gallon jug of water and a 5 gallon bucket. With you being bald, you have it easy.. no hair to wash. Another way to go is use that inflatable shower enclosure you have along with a "Solar Shower" bag. I know its not pleasant to second guess ones self, but I bet if you had replaced the distributor cap and plugs on the Tioga you would have cured the hard starting problem. "...If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice."

That Coleman Koolatron is a thermoelectric cooler, not a refrigerator. Most of the coolers that truck drivers use are these "electronic" coolers but they are not as effective as any refrigerators. My brother used to route cold air from the truck A/C to the cooler vent, so it was cooling the already cold air. It really helped keep food cold. Some truck drivers install small dorm fridges, just a mini-fridge with a genuine compressor. Those draw remarkably little current (1-3 amps) and are better insulated than the "electronic" coolers like Igloo or Coleman. My Coleman "electronic" cooler used to draw nearly 10 amps for only moderate cooling. On 1 or 2 occasions it melted the power cord or blew a cig. lighter fuse. These electronic coolers work best if you pre-cool them before you put food inside. And it's best to only put frozen or cold food in them. It will take all day to chill a warm six pack of canned drinks.

We used to have those "Blue Laws" here in Texas, but they were done away with in the '80s. Most stores except convenience stores were closed on Sundays. Still can't buy liquor on Sundays, and can't buy beer & wine on Sundays until after noon (when church lets out!). When I was trucking 'over-the-road', showers were free with a diesel fill-up. Around the truck stops there was usually someone on the CB (channel 19) asking for spare 'shower tickets', the shower voucher they give to truckers when they fill up. You might be able to get a free shower with gas fill up. I would ask. Go to the truckers cashier, if there's a separate one for the diesel pumps. Best of Luck, and Happy Trails!

Uses about 20ah over a 24hr period with the inside temp set at 40 degrees Fahrenheit and 80 degrees in the van. If I crank it up it goes down to 0 degrees Fahrenheit (-18 centigrade) so you can use it as a small freezer. They are complimented brilliantly with solar charging, you basically get free cooling.

*Sunday Blue Laws* There are all kinds of variations of them around the nation. Most of them take the form of no alcohol sale after midnight Saturday until after noon on Sunday. *Showers on the Road* Buy a black solar camper shower. It is made of black plastic, holds about 3 to 5 gallons. It heats up in the sun. You could set it on top of your dashboard while you drive and in 3 to 4 hours it will be nice and hot. Hang it from the door of a single person locking bathroom. The kinds with a floor drain and presto you have a free indoor shower. *DC Fridge* It’s more economical to buy dry ice and place it at the bottom of a plastic cooler. It will keep your cooler contents refrigerated there is no water to drain and since heat rises your contents will remain cold longer than a front loading DC Fridge. *Jackson* I love your cat. What a lucky cat to travel around the country like that.

any thermoelectric fridge consumes power 24/7, it never stops. the expensive domestic and such cycle on and off and have duty cycles. FAR more efficient. Don't get a thermoelectric, they are brutal for consumption!! If you are driving fast, that is very good mpg. You would be hard pressed to squeeze much more out of it. Of course you will hear of all the people with 454's that get 22 mpg and how awesome their diesels are. I really liked how you checked the water. It might sound silly to a lot of people, but that is a good idea. It's fun to see how you take care of Jax. If you are on an Indian Reservation and happen to be there during a local highschool basketball game, you might also be out of luck for alcohol. Various holidays and such are also times when alcohol may not be sold. I've read where people add insulation to the outside which helps reduce run time. I like the compressor Dometic uses for their fridges. Hope you like it.

Eric, Have you thought about a Yeti cooler? They are a little pricy but you can find them used on craigslist for well under the new price. We purchased one this yr and we have been able to keep ice up to 12 days. A bag of ice is much cheaper in the long run. Just a thought.

Eric I feel you on the blue law stuff. Nothing sucks more than forgetting to stock up on Saturday or buddy coming over drinking up your Sunday beer on Saturday night and then you cant even buy enough to get you through Sunday. I keep a bottle of Jack Daniels under my bed for such an emergency. I like the longer video and glad you loving the van, It looks cozy.

FYI Eric, The cheat sheet you got with the voltage numbers and what they indicate about the state of charge only apply to a battery bank that does not presently have any charging current being applied. For voltage readings to give anything close to a true indication to the state of charge, any charging current must be removed AND the battery bank MUST be allowed to rest for some time (like an hour and more) for the reading to come close to being accurate. With 2 amps coming from your panels, the voltage reading will OVERSTATE the % state of charge. If there is no charging, like at night and your lights, radio or tv on the voltage reading will UNDERSTATE the % of charge. You must keep that in mind or your being fooled in to thinking the wrong thing. What good is any information if it is inaccurate?

Nomadic Fanatic most of the time the alcohol rule is county wide, but some times it can be controlled on a city level. My county, Madison County, allows it on Sunday.

Like the new Outro, Jax get's the spotlight. Notice you have rain gutters on your van. Ever thought of picking up an EZ awning? 10 foot inexpensive awning that connects to your rain guards, packs away into a bag the size of a small tent. Just a thought.

Eric, that other comment was correct. You can exchange your empty 5 gallon jug and get one filled with water for under $10. Up here in New Hampshire it is $6.00 for a refill.

You are definitely not southern! Everyone down south knows that no alcohol is sold on Sunday's. It's an ignorant law, but been this way forever. Blows my mind that you've never been in a Love's truck stop either, lol glad you're enjoying yourself on the road. Love your cat, he's a big boy. I have 2 big boys myself, orange Tabby cats.

Rebecca Swilling Yeah, as I said, spent my whole life in Washington state. Never claimed to be southern, and as for Loves, I just meant I'd never showered there. I use their gas all the time.

Nomadic Fanatic Unfortunately it isn't just a south thing either! I remember growing up we were so lucky to live next to the Wisconsin border because Minnesota had the same crazy laws! When I moved to Washington I was actually shocked to see alcohol in everyday stores like Walmart and Walgreens as it was pretty much only available at liquor stores. Sometimes it still weirds me out to see beer just laying around on endcaps of Walmart, haha. Funny how those things can trip you up!

That manual water pump/spigot is cool, but I found mine wore out and broke in a few months. So I went with a pump (theoretically for for laundry detergent) from eBay...still food safe plastic but with stainless steel mechanism so less likely to wear out than plastic. Bored out a cork that fit the water bottle to slip the feed tube through, attached a length of silicon tubing to the feed tube to make it longer so it'll reach the bottle of any size water jug, and its been pumping great for almost a year now!
