I definitely agree with Kelly on the duramax. I went from a 2017 f250 gas to a 2017 Silverado diesel, both crew cabs and it is so much smaller, but it is a smooth riding truck and does pull great.

I just bought my big rig, got a 2015 Peterbilt 579 at an auction, it was emissions disabled, paid $2,100 for it, replacing the egr cooler by myself and clearing the dtc codes, has disc brakes all around, mid deck sleeper, 500 hp mx13 engine and an 18 speed. Runs great. I am trying to get new tires but there is a shortage right now.

You don't need cables anymore, just get one of those Audew jump starters, about the size of a big sandwich and light weight. I used mine jump starting for a week without ever charging it on my f250 diesel. I work at a school and jump at least two cars a week with dead batteries in the parking lot., it's never failed. I always carry cables but haven't used them in about three years.

I totally agree. The new dually chevy and ford cost up to $70,000. You can purchase a Sport Chassis used between $50,000 and $60,000. The sport Chassis and your truck has so much more room. Much more comfortable to drive and ride in for many hours. Great trucks!!!! Love it!!

Nice truck. I am a diagnostic diesel tech and I can tell you that you WILL have to replace Nox sensors, EGR coolers, valves, split pin bushings, one box(scr,dpf,doc all in one) injectors, up pump,etc. The"Detroit" diesel engine is actually a Mercedes Benz engine. Mercedes just bought the name. They have plenty of issues. Generally the issues do not pop up until 250k or so. Again, nice truck. The Western Star 5700 series are probably the best looking big rigs on the road.

Hi Jim and Kelly! Great video. I wanted to see what the inside of a HDT looked like. It’s pretty nice inside. I would love to ride in one. But not drive one. I’m with Kelly on that. I always used to when I was kid used to make the truckers driving this big rigs mane then toot their horns and they did. It was nice. Wow you drive long hours Jim. But glad you don’t have body aches. Thank you very much for the video. Take care have a great weekend and stay safe.

Great rig. I drive a 2000 International 4700, A medium duty truck. It has a flat bed that we haul our 4X4 and pull a bumper hitch travel trailer. It is a great set up for us. We mostly boondock. We set up base camps and use the 4X4 to explore the wide open spaces in Central, Eastern Oregon and Nevada. Having a tow truck as an RV Hauler is a great set up. The only challenge I have is driving on snow. My rig does not do well but I will be changing drivers next month. Maybe that will help.

Before we sold it we had 2006 Renegade motor home on the Freightliner Columbia chassis. It had the 12.8L Mercedes I-6 diesel with a 12 sp auto shift manual. Towed an 18' flat bed with a vehicle on it and you couldn't even tell the trailer was there. My wife also would never drive ours.

My first truck I drove was a 68 cabover white Freighliner 2 axle with a 8V92 Detroit engine, 6 speed manual trans pulling a 27' single half set trailer across an old steel bridge in Barstow, Ca a very narrow bridge with a yellow crown School Bus coming the opposite direction crossing the bride at the same time I thought we were going to hit our mirrors together My Heart was pounding a thousand miles an hour that was the road going out too fort Irwin, Ca , but it didn't take Me long too get use too it, the longest truck I drove was a set of Triple Trailer's in Nv , Az, and Ut straight Interstate I - 15 from fontana, Ca to Las Vegas, Nv to Scipio, Ut. Retired now but I miss Driving the Big Long Truck's. Kellie you should find a Big empty parking lot set up some orange cone's and practice driving and backing up it's not that hard and once you get used to it you will have fun and you will be begging Jim too let you drive, it just take's a little time and patience, do you know what GOAL stands for before you back up GOAL means ( Get Out And Look ) before you back up too make sure it clear and you know what your backing into. you need too learn in case Jim's not able too drive, I had a Heart Attack and Triple bypass surgery in Oct 20 , 2018 it can happen too anyone and anywhere, Better too be Safe then Sorry. jeepinjim63@gmail.com Jim

Good advice Jim....and we both agree. We will do just that once we get into our new coach - set up an area in an empty parking lot and let Kellie maneuver it around without hurting anything. Down sides to using a class 8 tractor to pull your RV. Some are; CDL required in some states of residence, Two 22.5" Super Single tires cost about as much as 6 Pickup size tires, Diesel Exhaust Fluid and diesel tanks to fill when fueling, 10 gallon rather than 10 quart oil changes, 13' 6" height clearance, wrecker calls start at $500. I don't know about the Western Stars, but I hear they're incredible trucks. But I'm a truck driver myself and I've driven super singles professionally. I wish you the absolute best with that whole truck, but I do recommend (if you can) that you switch from super singles to the regular tires, because if you have a blow out, you're relying on that single working tire for support, as opposed to having three extra tires that gives more support if you're close enough to limp to a shop. Like a Love's truck stop for example, of you're close enough to one. Just food for thought.

The Mrs needs to learn to drive, in case you become incapacitated. Start with tuning it on. Move to what the gages are for, and how to adjust the seat. Then start it and move it forwaed and backward 10 feet. Then drive around a park a few times. Then on the highway, after you get it there for 20 or 30 miles. Just work into it slowly. I did this with my wife and our camper, she now tows like a champ.

It's surprisingly affordable. It takes a little research, but you will find a good quality used Class 8 truck with less than 500k miles is less money than a late model dually pickup....and the Class 8 is usually a million-mile truck! As far as fuel is concerned, we have dual 120 gallon tanks and get about 8 1/2 mpg allowing us to stop and fuel up at the best price on our route. If you make the same trip in a dually you're having to stop every 300-400 miles no matter what the price - so we usually spend less on fuel than our friends in their pickups!

@@SuiteTravels I'm assuming that your getting that 8 1/2 when your pulling your rig.... ???? What kind of mileage did you get with the one ton pulling your rig? How does it compare?

That was very helpful and I can understand why when I go to Peterbuilt dealership what type of questions should I ask and is 20,000.00 to 16,000.00 is to low because I it is going to need work and a lot of stuff done to it to make a rv hauler or do you think I look around more and find one that needs work and get it at a lower price and start there what do you think about that

In 4 years of traveling with this type of equipment, we've only had one RV park turn us away Irving. When we search for places to say we always look for "big rig friendly" parks and usually look over the area on Google maps earth view if we have concerns.

Actually no we don't. It depends on the state you're licensed in - as an example, we're licensed in South Dakota. We don't have any restrictions with our Class A license. Some states, such as Texas, require special endorsements for weight or air-brakes.

Three questions (1) Do you really need the sleeper when you've got an RV behind you and (2) If you didn't have the sleeper could you have kept the Freightliner extend the frame for more length and then put a flat bed/drom (old school terminology) on the back for your smart car. (3) Are you limited to where you can camp? Most campgrounds are not able to handle a rig that big.

Have you ever thought about turning the rear brakes into an air fill up for your tires and everything
@SuiteTravels
@SuiteTravels 3 жыл бұрын
We do have an air coupler on the truck. The problem is our tires run 125 pounds and the on board compressor doesn't kick-in until it gets below 100 pounds....so the tires equalize at that pressure. It works well for things that don't require high pressures.

You run Super Singles on the rear of your HDT and regular tires on the steering wheel axle. Where do keep the two spares?

Very nice video. Question for you about the engine choice - would a "smaller" 11 liter or so engine provide better fuel economy while still providing essentially the same power as this since they would both be towing well under what they're designed for?

HDT? Does that stand for heavy damned truck? And I would recommend buying a jump pack for jump starting fellow campers. Its so much easier to grab it and not have to worry about moving the truck. And once the pack is low just plug it up for a few hours and its ready to go again. Nice set-up, I can say I'm a bit jealous.

Have you ever thought about doing a waterless car wash for the truck yes I know it’s a lot of real estate but the low sections you could use a water less wash(water and specific soap) and micro fiber towels ... it’s just a spray in wipe off I do it on my cars and trucks if I don’t want to get wet

Love your HDT - low mileage and so fully featured. I'm looking for one like yours, i.e. fully featured and already converted for RV Hauling. Hard to find, but maybe I'm not looking in the right places. Any suggestions on where to look?

Thanks Don. Take a look at our website (SuiteTravels.com/Resources) and near the bottom of the page there are some links. Join the HDT groups on Facebook and take a look at the Escapees forum. They both have "for sale" sections for HDTs.
