I've had three separate occasions where engine trouble or a flat tire on my personal vehicle has forced me to pull over on the highway. Each time, as soon as I step foot out of my vehicle to see what the problem might be, a trucker has called the highway patrol to report a single woman on the side of the road. Before I've had time to call for help, an officer has arrived to assist me. I'm so appreciative of truckers looking out for other drivers, especially single women in need of help!

Back in the good ol' days truckers would stop but truck drivers got robbed or hijacked so we stopped being "heroes of the highways"

If you don't have phone service and you need help signal the trucks driving in the opposite direction, the notify drivers approaching you at or near your mile marker and they can stop and help. They will see you because truckers see everything out there on the road.

I am 60 years old and learned flashing lights to let a trucker know they are safe to pull over from my dad when I was a kid, and I too have noticed it rare now a days to get a thank you from truckers. It always makes me smile when I get a thank you flash now a days. Bless all you otr folks out there.

My only recommendation here is at night, turn your lights off, then back on. This helps to not blind the driver if they’re looking back at you in their mirrors. Otherwise, I as a driver truly appreciate this and I don’t see it a lot from the public these days. Thank you

I still use my flash for this reason, and if I see a road trap you bet I’m flashing oncoming traffic for at least a mile. Most people don’t know what I’m doing, but there are people, especially truckers who do, they nod or wave to say thank you . I live in Florida now and a lot of people don’t know why I’m flashing my lights, but I went to California (Fresno area) and people tend to warn you of traps, or flash their lights to signal whatever.

Old school is the right way 👊🏻🥃. Eld is big government. Paper logs is for old school that respects limits and common sense of limitations. Nothing wrong with working 90-100hrs a week when you can safely , but some people can’t & that’s ok . Just learn limits and stick to them .

I work with semi drivers at a grocery store and hearing stories is funny and crazy. Thank you lights are just shorr flashes of the hazards. School buses do it also. I'm not a big rig but driven from Detroit to Denver many times, I learned a lot of etiquette. As a half ton truck myself I've helped countless big rigs. And let's be honest, y'all are the REAL Santa. Anything you've ever bought was on a big rig at some point!

8:26 Etiquette Rule #5 is my absolute favorite --- I always get such a big kick outta having "Mr. Enormous Towering Truck" flash his parking lights to say "thank you" when I cycle my high-beams to let him know that he's gotten past me far enough to safely pull back into my lane again. :D

I'm a 4-wheel, 6-wheeler due to a dually pickup, and tend to tow large long loads as well. Think Antique tractors...lol. I ALWAYS use the flash for room with headlights as well as thank you lights. It's simple courtesy in my opinion. Problem in my mind are all the "uneducated" drivers out there that think they are the Kings of the Road. Notice people that the Biggest Vehicles on the Road earn the most respect. They have an accident and it's the 4-wheeler with the most damage. HELLO!

There’s one important point you need to mention to the 4 wheelers that trucks are heavy so they’d take more time to speed up after a complete stop and never break check or road rage against trucks.

Thank you for mentioning the "turtle races"!!! That is my biggest pet peeve when I am traveling and truckers do that. I respect the job you do and always use my lights to signal truckers when the situation calls for it. Be safe!

Great video, all very true! Couple more to add, If youre leaving a shipper or your approaching an intersection and you see a truck is about to pull in, stay back so he has enough room to pull in without hitting you with his trailer. I always do this and always get a friendly wave from the guy turning in. Also, if youre an experience driver and you see someone struggling with a back, go over and spot them. More than likely theyre going to be worried about their blind side bumping something while backing, having a spotter can be a huge help.

LOVE your videos! My 2 cents, being a new driver, is for the experienced drivers to have patience, slow down and let the beginners time to learn to set up, back, have as many GOALS as they need. I’m currently sitting at the busiest truck stop I’ve ever seen and I can’t practice backing because of the horrible trucker etiquette, or lack thereof. Just sayin...

I have never been a truck driver but I learned everything you just posted when I was 16 yrs old and that was 60 years ago. I would travel from Mi to Tn and back then there were few freeways so most of it was two lane roads and travelling at night. I was with my older brother and he taught me all of those curtesy's which you have just mentioned and to this day I follow that advice. I appreciate it and so do the truck drivers. I hope everyone reads this and does the same.

Thank you for this etiquette episode. If I can add a couple things? Im 35 years doing oversized. When passing an oversized load, PLEASE get it done as quickly as possible! Oversized drivers are looking ahead to make sure nobody is on the shoulder changing a flat tire or? We move over slightly to the shoulder and now throwing rocks on our rear pilot cars while trucks pass. If we all come around a corner and a poor soul is changing a tire on the shoulder I WILL take out the truck next to me turtle racing me instead of killing the innocent motorist on the shoulder who knows nothing about what is about to happen. This situation happens all the time because most modern truck drivers don’t want to turn off their cruise control while passing. This is extremely frustrating.

And that driver is why I like my ungoverned trucks. I floor it and get out of the way. Lot's of people don't get that. The oversized isn't in your way, you and every one else is in HIS way! Also to add to your comment, please for the love of christ put a radio in your trucks, turn them on, and freaking use them to communicate with the oversized guys. I ALWAYS ask an oversized if it is good for me to pass if we are on anything else but flat, long completely open road.

Yes I do just that quite a bit. Half to sometimes! When traffic is busy though, slowing my truck so others can pass will quite often result in a different kind of traffic jam. Nobody wants to get stuck behind an oversized load (including myself) so there’s always one more, one more, one more truck that wants to get by. Maintaining speed with everyone else has always been the easiest and safest way for me to drive.

I been driving over the road for 5 years and I realized things were getting harder for me for being out of shape and having a bad attitude for eating unhealthy so I started working out and I changed my eating habits and every time I run into a truck driver with a bad attitude I just stay quiet and wait until I do my next work out and take out my anger on my work outs. I used to be 230 pounds and now I am 190 pounds and working out gets easier at this point because I dont have extra weight on my body and my muscles are more slim and flexible allowing me to do more with less energy. And I usually eat Grape fruit, Kiwi fruit, Honey Granola bars, Honey, Cashews, mixed nuts unslated, and water in the name of the father, son, and holy ghost. I can honestly say I feel so much better than before and I am working very hard to get a 6 pack.

Awesome vide! I grew up under 18 wheelers at my dad and moms shop. I had the opportunity to ride with some of the best truck drivers I’ve known. They taught me Truck driver etiquette. I don’t have a CB radio in my pickup any more, I still remember how to let my friends in the Big rigs that I am I here for them with my headlights and flashers. God bless our Truckers! ❤️

Thank you for spreading the good word about trucking, the real word about trucking and how fun and rewarding it can be!! 💪💪😎 When it comes to girls safety on the road or anybody’s safety .. When you see a newer truck with the headlights on while parked for a long time, he more than likely has the parking brake off and using the trailer brake handle or lever. Some tards do this to disable to auto idle engine shutdown to keep the air conditioning going. We had a driver who did this and the lever released while he was asleep. It rolled forward fast enough to cause $35,000 worth of damage to the truck when it hit a reefer in front of it. Imagine the surprise waking up to that!

My Father taught me about the "thank you light" courtesy years ago. I always smile at the reply! My kids also have been taught this and to be respectful of distancing between them a truck. The bigger the truck, the number of axels and trailers will all give a good indication of the extra stopping room the trucker needs to stay safe for themselves and you. I’m still marked as a rookie, I run OTR extremely rarely, but was trained by respectful drivers such as yourself, and must agree that we may only ‘know’ each other for a couple hours at most, usually only a couple minutes, and only as “hey swifty” or “blue Pete”, or if you got your CB on, could know me as Chowder, but I digress, though we may only see each other for minutes, we still should be treating each other like friends and family. Cause everyone is stressed out and in a rush because everyone wants there freight now and dont give us enough time too deliver and do the things we need too do like shower fuel and use the restroom and eat or get proper rest so sometimes people and lil delays such as swift trying too back for an hour can make you late and possibly lose your job.. but i agree if im backing and almost in a spot dont pull in front of me or go behind me i hate that shit just wait if its taking 5-10 plus minutes get out and help the driver too speed up the process safely..

I was a commercial contractor driving one of your 4 wheel vehicles that worked for United Van Lines for 20 years doing customer repair work in Md. and northern Va. and drove lots of miles. I always respected truck drivers and my father always told me to "blink my lights" when a truck wanted to pass as it was good manners and some day I might breakdown and need a truck driver to help me. I'm now 77 and I still respect truck drivers while driving from one Doctors appointment to the other. I retired when I was 75!!

Getting on with FedEx freight at 18 & running a lift on the dock, I’ve met a good variety of drivers and had plenty of conversations of advise and knowledge passed on in the last year and a half. All of course to just learn as much as possible while waiting on my 21st birthday. But one thing they all have in common is the days they gained experience by taking the otr position when first starting, they would never want to go back to, lol. I watch these videos and truthfully enjoy the perspective and vibe you give. Your days seem more filled of life, compared to our line haul/city drivers. No doubt every job has its ups/downs. Our positions are home every night, they love the set schedule, of course the money, but clock in at 3:00am and hop on a lift, you’ll hear plenty of complaining from any linehaul driver who gets back to the terminal at 5:00am who was told they can’t go home and must work the dock for another 2 hours, or at 9:00am you’ll hear plenty of city drivers complain about the ugly freight on their route, how many stops they have, etc. You’re videos definitely give off an inspirational feeling to people like me, a big “it’s what you make of it in life” kind of statement. & never fails to entertain me during my meals or car rides to work. Shelby, something I found to be helpful in my 20 years of experience is. when you are backing up, back up slow enough so that if you bang into something and there are no scratches or damage to the vehicle and to whatever the vehicle hit, then you were backing up just fast enough. If there are any scratches or damage when backing up to a vehicle or the thing that got hit, then you were going TOO fast. I hope this helps. Have a good day.

Here in Europe we flash the lights day and night .... and as thank you we use the turning lights like right/left/right/left

Since I often tow an RV trailer I have a new appreciation for big trucks and what they deal with. I always give lots of space, don't cut in front when they are trying to maintain distance and when the signal to switch lanes I accommodate them. Sometimes flash to let them know there is space. No fast moves. I've noticed it's always the truckers who are patient with me towing as well.

That might be terrain-driven. You need to anticipate that they're going to speed up after topping a hill and slow down when climbing one. Pass them on the ascent, get out of their way on the descent.

I've been driving long enough to know trucks speed and slow down depending on which side of the grade we're on. I'm talking about those dudes I have been driving at will say 58 miles an hour, and then I go to pass them and all of a sudden when I'm next to them they decide to speed up and match my speed. The thing that bothers me the most is when I do end up passing them either because they get distracted looking at their phone or they just slow down, they vanished out of sight. Those dudes suck

I work for a major Telecom Company. I've been on the road for 43 years now. Everything this wonderful young Woman says is gospel of the road. Simple etiquette goes a long way. I've done maybe 2M miles in a van.

Your point about moving over is really good. But the reason for lorry’s moving over is the air displacement because of the volume of the Vehicle can actually move parked vehicles or people by the wake of air. It’s great you talk about etiquette. The passing trucks is so important. In Europe they tend to have 2 lanes motorways (highways) so the 1mph speed difference and taking forever to pass is frustrating. Keep up these videos as love them....

While I've been out of the trucking vocation for some time now, one thing distresses me a bit: it seems that few [especially newer drivers] are using the CB to inform other drivers of local conditions. Few report "bear" sightings, or side-of-the-road issues, or even offer hints for a good truck stop up the road. I find that lack of "connection" or camaraderie of the road and the drivers traversing the country unsettling. Everything has gone to cellphones, which are not connected to others "in the immediate area". If folks understood that transportation in general is "getting everyone and everything" down the road in the most efficient manner, as safely as possible, they might be more accommodating of traffic conditions. I also thing it would be HUGELY beneficial if every young student driver physically rode with a truck driver for one day. A video isn't enough -- being IN the truck and seeing the challenges might help shape their understanding. JMHO

I have never driven a TT truck, but my brother drove one for years, and my sister and her husband owned a trucking company. That was many, many years ago, before automatic transmissions. It was a “profession” at that time, and I love the ride alongs, and loved the sound of reefers to get to sleep. Strange? Yes.

Oh I got another one to add! Even though us LTL drivers aren’t OTR, we’re still truck drivers and can’t back out of a fuel island. (Edit) also to echo what you said about passing trucks. if you can get around an LTL driver while on the road, do it cause most of our trucks are governed at 65mph.

I TIP my hat to you Ma’am, I do not drive big rigs, I keep people alive for a living, seriously, I work advanced Critical Care, Trauma and Surgical Critical Care. I’m not sure why, but I’ve watched several of your Vlog,s , videos and truly enjoyed the nature you have shared with us, I am old enough (60) to remember truckers being called the “Knight’s of the Road”. We live in such a fast paced life now, seldom does one see people looking around now, only one person with their head up, the driver. The others, well, they are looking down at their phones etc... I truly thank you for all you do, I can eat food, buy gas, type on this iPad because of people like you, you ALL make life as we know it possible but seldom does anyone thank you. I turn on my hazard lights for a blink or two to thank other people for letting me go in front of them if I want to change lanes. I also give turning trucks a lot of room when I'm stopped at an intersection so they can make a wide turn. I love it when I get a wave or drivers flash their lights when I do that. I learned a lot about driving playing the American Truck Simulator video game.

Shelby ,Thank You for this !I have had my life saved by drivers more than once. Also some of my most loved people are Truck Drivers' I am a witness to how much the 4 wheelers put Drivers and themselves in deadly danger. It is as if they think 80,000 lbs of truck can stop just like they can . As we know that is exactly how people are killed and it is tragic that the truck driver gets the blame. I see it everyday . People in passenger cars ...DO NOT JUMP INTO THE SAME LANE in front of and CLOSE TO A Big Rig.do not cut them off and if you do, never step on your break. You have no idea of the danger you put yourself in. They need space , do not fill that cushion they give themselves to stop. . I love Truckers and trucks , and if you do not respect those trucks it is your life you are putting on the line. Pass them as fast as you can . They cannot see you , that is another deadly spot for you to be , get past them. Do not tail gate , it is never safe to tailgate any vehicle. And guess what? When you are merging onto the highway, nobody has to do anything for you , it is your job to be up to speed and get in a safe place in the lane. ALWAYS use your blinkers. and if you are reading this it just might be your life that gets saved !!! Awesome video. I’m been diving since 1998. One thing I’ve been noticing is drivers putting cardboard and signs in drivers side door window.. I thought you need to see all around you. And that old saying if you can’t see me in my mirrors I can’t see you. Doesn’t apply anymore. Another thing is when passing other trucks and they do the flash lights. New drivers please don’t use your high beams to flash me over. The short bright lights in mirror is kind of blinding and more intense at night time.

Carlos Roman Trucker at night time your eyes are focus then you look in mirror then you get bright lights.. I’ll use bright lights to flash over in day time. Another one that gets me is drivers parking on side of highway with no 4-ways on at night time. They will have lights on and that’s it. Seen too many wrecks cause of people thinking the berm where truck is parked is a travel lane.

I started out in the transportation industry as a truck driver Ended up A railroad engineer. Honestly I enjoyed driving a truck much more than running a train. Everything on the railroad is down by committee. I liked the Zen of being alone and not knowing where my next load will take me. Truck drivers are usually very polite. Sometimes you have to be a bully when driving a truck or you’re not gonna get anywhere. This is true especially in city traffic.

Your tip near the end about the 66 passing the 65 was spot on. The only down side is the 65 keeps getting pushed back and they are already moving slower than everyone else on the Interstate. I have to keep reminding myself as a 4 wheeler when I find myself behind the 66 that I am just not in that big if a hurry and this too shall pass.

Thanks. This is useful info for non-truckers also. I try to be respectful of multi-ton vehicles no matter where. They have less room to maneuver, take more time to stop (and speed up). Let's all use common sense on the roads! I also try to thank truckers who flash their lights letting me know it's OK to return to their lane if the traffic's tight. I do that by flashing my emergency flashers 3 times. Makes me feel good anyway. 😎

10:54 you can also feel it sitting in your vehicle. What no one understands that that a car/truck not only moves... they "push" through the air and that air has to go somewhere. If a truck cannot get ino the left lane and passes you at 65mph you get a 65mph gust of wind knocking against your car.

When someone is barely passing you let off the accelerator for like 15 seconds to let them buy. If someone merges over to let you on, don’t box them in. Slow down and if you’re faster than them pass then.

I'd have to slightly disagree. If you're going to get well ahead before you merge onto a highway that's fine. But if a truck moves over to let you on, get behind him so he can move back. NEVER pass on the right side and risk getting blindsided. It takes 10s of your trip to do a proper merge and pass as you get upto your speed.

I'm just a regular pickup truck driver out on the highway, but I've always flashed my headlights on and off twice when a trailer has enough space to come back into my lane when passing me. And I do the double hazard flash when someone does something courteous on the highway for my benefit. I travelled the 401 highway in Ontario every single day when I used to live there, and I actually put a CB in because I'd come up on trucks/drivers that I knew just from the highway. It was pretty cool. I used to run really small loads here and there with an enclosed trailer with my diesel Dodge Ram.

I am 70 years old and I too was taught when learning how to drive ( on the road by the way ) to hit my bright lights then dim when I was being passed or passing a semi . Common courtesy! Still do it to this day

I'm a "4-wheeler" as you call us :-), I drive most of the time since I'm a field service technician and I do the Headlight Flashing when I see an 18-wheeler trying to get into my lane and for the majority of the time, I do get the 'thank you' flash back, I have some how also getting a few '18-wheelers' that just cut in without even having their turn signal on. Thankfully I drive defensively so I can usually tell when someone is trying to cut into my lane so I tend to prepare for it, but none the less, I wish all truckers would do those etiquette points, because they are very helpful for us "normal" drivers :-), either way, love the videos, wish you the best on the project as well as your new position. Hope I get to meet you guys some day (if you ever come down to TX :-) )

@Jeff Furrow It works a little less handily in Canada due to our daytime running lights, but they do still dim a bit. I usually blink my fog lights twice to signal that the truck is far enough past to come back in. I figure that's good enough. It's a good feeling out there that a small courtesy like that is appreciated.

@Jeff Furrow Problem is, most new cars dont give you that choice, they are automatic and cant be turned off, during the day time they are off and will only flash (high beams during the day are not that strong so should not bother people as much as during the night) however, these newer cars will have the lights on at night and you really cant turn them off, you'd need to flash the high beams (I.E. Vibe 2007 (my old Car) Will not let you turn off the headlights at night)
