My wife and I are owner operators and we lease our equipment to a nationwide RV Transport company. If that freight market in which you are currently running gets bad you might want to consider hauling new RVs. You will have to purchase a trailer. We get to pick and choose our loads, get to pick and choose when we load, we get to pick and choose how fast we drive, which roads to drive , where to fuel. We get to pick and choose when we unload. We currently run at 3 dollars a mile. The downside is we have to find our own back haul going back towards Elkhart Indiana. We haul automobiles back east just to cover our fuel expense. Yes you have to load and unload your trailer but that's easy work. Good luck on your endeavors.

We have insurance on our loads. It depends on who was at fault. If it is beyond repair, it is written off just like a vehicle.

A CDL trainer gave us a tip on backing a trailer. "Turn towards your trouble." If your trailer is going left (trouble) and you want to go straight or right, turn the steering wheel to the left. Obviously, the opposite for right heading trailer. I was amazed how many seasoned drivers appreciated that tip.

We live and learn, and in this case, you did the right thing. And I bet those drivers who stuck with you to the end would do it again in a heartbeat! You showed them you cared about them as people, and not just employees. You showed them respect and loyalty, and they did the same. All the best luck in the future for you and Bright Mountain!

I am from Denmark. I always thought, one or ten. One truck, you can park it when ur off, and be efficient when working, keeping costs low. Ten, you can manage them, step in when needed, make sure they have clear paths and goals in their work.

Since June of last year, things have been rough. I had to volunteer for a deployment with the National Guard to avoid getting laid off at ABF. At this point I am just considering getting out of trucking and going law enforcement, trucking is just too chaotic and unreliable for me to trust to support my family. Anyways, glad to see you are doing well. Sometimes rolling solo is just the way to go! Stay safe out there!

Thanks so much for walking us through what went on with Bright Mountain, Shelby! Sometimes things work out, other times they don't, but whatever the outcome, we learn and grow. I'm grateful you are in a better place mentally and physically right now, and as others have mentioned, looking happy and heathy after all the stress of the last short handful of years. I'd love to hear more about how you operate as a owner/operator in the industry and the good/bad/ugly of the options you have to pick from when you are hiring/leasing out your services. Take care, stay safe, and I'm looking forward to your next post! Hugs to you and Dakota! And mystery camera person! 😄

I think giving drivers all the nice things they want is a good concept however I also think that's what made a lot of companies go under. You need someone with a little ice in their veins to make those hard choices and you do have a heart of gold for sure. No one should blame you for shooting for the stars. They say you only miss the opportunities you don't take. At least you tried. Always forward my friend!

I totally get it. I drove for Swift for about 2 years then I went into the office as a Driver Leader at Swift. I have had to hire and manage a bunch of drivers, and unfortunately fire a few. I get how rough it is to have to fire drivers. It is absolutely awful. I recently decided that I’d rather be on the road than in the office, and I’m getting ready to jump back in at Swift. Running a small fleet (or being part of a team that runs a large fleet) is not easy, and I’m amazed that you have done as well as you have. Keep it up!

Some people don't know this, but the screen in the gladhand seals is to keep paper wasps out of the glad hand connections when the trailers are sitting not connected to a truck so they don't build nests in the trailers airlines. Happiness by the Mile, you are doing great as a business owner. You took on a huge responsibility & the opportunity highlighted where growth inside & outside are needed. Now you are being regenerated within. You are intelligent, hard worker & attached or attaching to the pulse of your emotions. Im excited to see the next chapter. If you are ever led to have emoloyees again, do more vetting of drivers, make sure your boundaries are set within & go slow in driver growth to make sure your internal boundaries stick/hold position. Patience. Patience. Patience. Its a growing process. Love traveling with you via youtube.

Every experience, especially as a younger person, is a learning experience whether it goes as desired or takes a turn. Learn from it, learn about yourself in the situation, and keep moving forward. Good for you in the Bight Mountain experience. Second, dealing with people who work with and for you can be the most difficult part of company ownership. Unfortunately not everyone cares about success, responsible behavior and being accountable for their behaviors as one would expect and hope for these days. Setting expectation and then holding them to those can be challenging but is an absolute must to be successful. Keep on learning and try to enjoy the journey, you will do well despite the hills and valleys that come your way.
