Allowing for the unexpected is good. I had a load one time going from the SF Bay area to Tar Island, Alberta. This was with my own truck, leased to a company. That company, when possible, would let you tell them when you planned on being there and call and set the appointment. For some unknown reason, after figuring out how long it would take to get there, I added one additional day. Weather was not a consideration, Summer. I was trucking along fine just west of Wells Nevada, I head a 'bang' and looked out my mirrors and saw nothing but smoke. I was sure I had blown an engine. I got towed to Wells and found out it was a blown air compressor that had spewed fuel all over my dual stacks. They didn't have one in stock and had to get it from Salt Lake City. It came and then installed it and I was back on the road almost exactly 24 hours after the breakdown. Made the delivery on time. Lesson learned. This was about 50 years ago.

I really appreciate this episode. I’m so glad that Crete takes care of their drivers the way they do. Not only do drivers have to negotiate crazy drivers and hectic traffic, dangerous conditions, but ALSO craziness from receivers and shippers (park here, don’t park there, this number there, this penalty there, and on and on)! You are awesome. You just take it as it comes and get it done. Keep on truckin’! 💯🦅🌟

So my take away from that story is ask your dispatcher before signing on to any load if there is a late fee and a lumper fee and if yes then have that worked out before taking any load and get it in writing via tex message going forward. Protect your self. Great job getting that load delivered. I have done many of those runs from Idaho to the east coast back in my day. They are no picnic in the winter. Love you. Be safe out there.
@TheJoyofTrucking9 ай бұрын
Thanks! Since Kevin communicated with dispatch and asked for his delivery time to be changed (with two days warning) (and a shut down), we don’t think this will be an issue for him or cost him money. In general, even if a driver is late, we haven’t heard of this type of payment request situation with any Crete drivers before. A very strange and out of the ordinary place.
@deanbarboza9 ай бұрын
It would only take one event like the load you did to trigger my mind to ask every load going forward about late load penalties and lumper fees. They did not tell you all that a lumper was needed ? The lumper just unloaded the truck without you being told and how much ? And you did not know anything about it. Let that be a lesson.
@deanbarboza9 ай бұрын
I don’t mean that in a mean way. It only takes one time to get burned. The fact they would not give you the bills signed till you payed the fee would piss me off.
@88KeysIdaho9 ай бұрын
It'd be a COLD day in hell, before I as a company driver would absorb the cost of a lumper fee. The broker or trucking company pays it. Not me.

Can you explain why truckers either leave their trucks in the fuel aisles long after refuelling OR pull forward only far enough for another truck to refuel but not far enough for the next truck to leave? I can see how that would be frustrating especially if you are on a tight timeline or getting low on fuel and need to get to a pump. Seems like lots of drivers do this.
@TheJoyofTrucking9 ай бұрын
Hi there…fine question!!! The unspoken rule is to fuel and then pull forward enough so next truck can fuel (truck stops are not designed to be able to pull forward enough to let truck behind them pass by). That’s when you go in to use bathroom or quickly buy something. Then you should get back in your truck so driver behind you can pull forward. Sadly, some drivers dilly dally. And some do it on purpose to squeeze in their 30 minute reset break. This is VERY rude as the truck behind is trapped. This is where sometimes nasty confrontations happen. Very unfortunate. The driver at the pump will sometimes need to go in to deal with payment. And sometimes they go in for other things if they are trapped behind another truck or inconsiderate of trucks behind him/her. Usually all goes well. But when rude and selfish drivers are inconsiderate of others it definitely is frustrating.

Wow, well I've never come across either late pay nor lumber pay in UK/EU. But as for stopping in bad weather? our companies do NOT do that, you just drive till you cannot and it your fault if your late. @TheJoyofTrucking9 ай бұрын
Not sure what your exact question is? Crete paid Kevin. And since he contacted Crete twice about changing delivery time I don’t think it will count as ‘being late.’ Especially since he was told to shut down. Crete tried contacting the receiver and hadn’t heard back. Don’t know how they will deal with the situation. Crete did give Kevin an EFT number to pay the ‘late fee.’ Given the weather this was ridiculous on the part of the receiver!
