Caryl Birke You are so right. Both De Niro and Duvall should've received Oscar nominations for this film. Kudos to all the supporting players in this film as well including the late, great Burgess Meredith.

@Shakti Prasad Mishra It's left unclear, although it's implied that Tom Spellacy did arrest him for it, which led to Jack's exposing Des's role in all the shady land deals and then to Des's banishment to the desert by the cardinal (Cyril Cusack).

@@edkeaton1085 So right; everybody in the supporting cast: Charles Durning, Ed Flanders, Burgess Meredith, Kenneth McMillan, Cyril Cusack, et al, was just brilliant in this. Sad they're all long gone now, except for Rose Gregorio, who surprisingly didn't get much work after this.

Unfortunately, "True Confessions" was lost in the compost of DeNiro's powerhouse performances of the early 80's but is an overlooked and under appreciated masterpiece of fall from grace and redemption both spiritual and relational. Two astounding performances, great Noir atmosphere centered around the Black Dahlia murder, the seamy underbelly of Archdiocesan politics when Catholicism was king and Georges Delerue's soundtrack into the mix. The ending, where the Monsignor, who has fallen from the purple ladder and dizzying heights of ecclesiastical power, follows his spiritual father into the purifying desert to end his days as a poor priest serving a poor community, is one of the most powerful moments in cinema. Showing his reconciled brother the windblown cemetery where they both will rest makes it one of the most poignant. Thanks for sharing.

It was nice to know Des spent some of the latter part of his career with Seamus, who he admired and respected.

A great movie and this closing scene gets me every time. They’ve both made their peace with each other, and realize that they only have each other. Fantastic acting from 2 great actors at the top of their game

I guess the acting is so great because of the minimal acting (minimal words and subtle minimal actions from eyes and hands). At the end of their lifes, they appeared to be true gentlemen. What a monumental movie. Thank you so much for posting.

Yeah! I thought they captured the minimalism of brotherly communication - how brothers can say say so much with only grunts and gestures. They know each other.

I love Delerue's version of Carrick Fergus, especially during the credits rolling in the end. The concept of the composer who can take an Irish secular song and turned it into a mournful yet acroamatic instrumental was one of George's unique talents. One of the cinemas' most exquisite movie scores.

It was great to see these two incredibly talented Academy Award winners on screen together for the first time. They both have great chemistry and each have left a legacy of land mark films over the years. I wish that they had done more films together.

Why do people don't talk of this film often? It's got Duvall and De Niro is starring roles and Georges Delerue as the composer.

One who had a loved bro can't avoid to get moved by this film; however I suggest to read also the original novel, in which many other things happen, many other characters are on the move, and there's a beautiful depiction of the Irish community in the L.A. of thirties.

Two great actors working together for the first time (they're both in "Godfather Part II", but they don't share any screen time) and the film was only modestly successful. Too bad because it is very well made with an excellent supporting cast. It's a fictitious rendering of the "Black Dahlia" murder.

The church where this was shot is in Lancaster, California. It was also used for the wedding rehersal scene in the "Kill Bill" films.
