When Hank tells Peter that "Blood is blood" before he raises his gun to shoot Danvers, I thought he was appealing to his son to let him to do it, not that he wanted to commit "suicide by cop." That would seem horrible to expect his own son to kill him.

@@Gawanji It's a bit confusing -- he tells Peter that "I need your help son" (to kill me or cover up this mess) and "Blood is blood." Also police are trained to keep their finger off the trigger until they are actually ready to fire -- Peter also did not have his finger on the trigger until he actually shot Hank as he pointed the gun at Danvers. But then again, why would Hank admit to Danvers that he moved Annie's body if he intended to kill her? The creators intention might have been for it to be suicide by police but it is a confusing the way it is shot. I thought Hank might have shot himself instead of making his son kill him.

@@ericdunayer6687 There are many indications throughout the season that Hank is suicidal-- wracked by guilt, self-hatred and fear of being caught for evidence-tampering with Annie. He's certainly no mastermind of crime or power-- he's a tool of an evil corporation who didn't even get the reward they promised. Initially, his catfishing by the Russian bride seems like it's being played for laughs-- but what if it was his last shred of hope? This would make his final act an attempt to help Danvers' investigation-- he is confirming that Annie's body was moved and that she was killed in the caves.

@@SuperRobertoClementehe’s a desperate man but he’s also extremely selfish and abusive. I don’t think he had any good intentions in this scene. Making Peter shoot him was probably the last worst thing he could do to Peter knowing that he had lost control over Peter who was taking Danvers side. It was his last F you to Peter when his attempts to manipulate him with the blood is blood dialogs failed. This is just my opinion, having grown up with terrible parents. I see Peter as a victim because now he’s screwed for life mentally and if Hank was truly a good man he could have just shot himself, sparing Peter his mind and career.

That was my first thought, actually. My guess is one of the "Night Country" writers read about it when that theory was first proposed a year or two ago. @@xuxon24 Yeah I sincerely understand how a slab avalanche is a considerably less interesting explanation for Dyatlov than "aliens" or "military experiment gone awry". Based on the evidence though it's almost certainly what happened. Reminds me of all this hysteria about alleged "UFO's" that's infected our culture lately, even resulting in Congressional hearings. I get the need certain people have for "UFO's" to be real, but all the footage I've seen can be reasonably debunked. It's usually birds.

I’m sure the writers were forced to shoehorn season one references. They’ve all been clumsy or even nonsensical. The crooked spiral very specifically was a symbol of a family cult that sacrificed women and children. People familiar with the spiral were people who had experience with the cult. Now it’s here this season… but represents something totally different? Why not just use a different symbol? And although spirals are extremely common in old religions, the crooked spiral is much more distinct. If the spiral doesn’t have anything to do with the Carcosa cult, what are the chances that symbol would be used in the same exact town where the family that runs the Carcosa cult are doing business? And what are the chances that said family has business in the same exact town where Travis Cohle lived, the father of the detective who brought down the Carcosa cult in Louisiana? It’s astronomical.

@@MrCodyRobison The worst is that we found out in season 3 that the Crooked Spiral cult became national news. Mahershala Ali’s character is asked if he thinks the missing kids in his case could have been victims of the Crooked Spiral Cult. So how the hell do our detectives this season not know what it means? A google search would surely show them it’s a symbol of a Louisiana cult. That won’t happen because it’s clearly not supposed to specifically reference the cult. But then why use it at all?! Especially the amount of times they’ve shown it. I can’t help but feel that this was originally its own horror story that the showrunner was forced to adapt and mold into a True Detective story in the same universe. I’m willing to bet the original version of this story did not even involve policing. The policing aspect and references to season one have been the weakest parts of the show.

I'm still not convinced that this show is tied to the Cthulhu myth and the Yellow King that related to the first season. If any supernatural relations, its more close to the Sedna Goddess of the Sea. I saw more clues and symbols relating to Sedna. Especially the drawings in Clark's trailer and the blonde headed girl with missing fingers. Not to mention all the shots and visions of hair of deceased people. My other theory is; the show doesn't any supernatural aspect to it and the town's water from the mine is causing mass hallucinations and deaths, that the Tuttles want covered up.

The series also draws inspiration to the real life case of the Dyatlov pass, where some hikers were found dead in the snow in a similar way to the Tsalal scientists. The yellow king/blue king feels like a stretch. If that were the case there is too much to fill in that last episode. Even tho im feeling we are getting a ”jazz hands” explanation. Feels more like there is some female group behind it all. The three-fingered crab-lady entered the drycleaners for a reason in the background. Also, her look when she is shown the symbol as she walks away tells me more than enough. Annie got killed by some mine-worker or guard after she found proof of the pollution. Clarke knows what she found and have helped her with her case against the mine, hence why he is scared that the group of females is gonna kill him since they chalk him up as a traitor or whatever. The females flash-freeze the scientists at the crabfactory and dumps them out there in a ritualistic manner. They probably cut the power after getting info from the former tech-guy. Hence is why he left when he heard they were all dead. He didnt belive that they would go through with it but his support of them still shows. She is awake probably means that mother earth is awake, or the spirit of Annie is awake through those others.

Posting for a friend: It's a very compelling argument supported by recent 3-D topographic and climate modelling done independently. Regardless of that, the screenwriters may have been inspired by an earlier theory that the soviets were experimenting with a sound frequency weapon and the hikers were in the wrong place at the wrong time. Sound frequency weapons, in theory, depending on intensity, could blow eardrums, scramble brains, make your skin feel like it's on fire, and cause heart attacks. Perhaps Tsalal isn't just drilling ice cores? It's a good cover story because they could do it endlessly for years and no one is interested until they actually stumble onto a mythic perfectly preserved prehistoric micro-organism. They are a pretty secretive group for what sounds like fairly mundane research.

I went to Lapland for a couple of weeks one Xmas. And we got 2 hours of sunlight the rest of the day was completely dark with the occasional aurora (amazing but different story) and it is really depressing. An an ice igloo maker called Erik told me his father is from the norther most city of the world (I forget the name) but that region has one of the highest rates of alcoholism, drug abuse and suicide. His theory was because of the long dark winters. It does make you very disoriented waking up dark and going to sleep dark for many hours either side and it’s very oppressive even if you’re surrounded by such a beautiful part of the world. The victims of the Dyatlov Pass disaster were found in the same state as the scientists in the show. The modern analysis of all the evidence points to a slab avalanche that terrorized the hikers and made them run away partly clothed. They then suffered from false heating as the blood rushes to the skin to heat it up while the internal organs are dying. Whether the showrunner for TD S4 will accept the Dyatlov Pass conclusions or call BS on the whole thing remains to be seen.

When Hank shot Otis, he expected/hoped Prior would side with him since “blood is blood”. “**I** didn’t kill Annie…” I’m still unclear about the scientists’ deaths, this last episode is 90 minutes, so curious to see how this all wraps up!!

She's shared that the polar night and polar day can be rough, but it's about how you approach them. She shared that polar night, which is about 3 months or so of darkness, is better if you have a structured routine and get outside enough, otherwise your body just wants to sleep for as long as it can. That's not necessarily easy for everyone, but I think going in to this story with the mindset, and that quote, set us all up for a very different expectation of a story that takes place during a long night.

The Spiral Cult is not reminiscent of a Satanic cult because there is no such thing as a Satanic cult, especially one that harms or sacrifices people. It’s important to make that distinction: it’s reminiscent of the made up stories Christians would tell about alleged “satanists”, who were really just people of other religions but even more often just fellow Christians. Satanists are just anti-theists. They don’t actually believe in God or Satan. They just use Satan as a metaphor for their rebellion against Christianity. Basically… edgy theatrical atheists. Nic Pizzolatto specifically chose the Yellow King because he didn’t want to demonize any actual pagan/occult beliefs that some people still hold today. So he thought of the creepiest fictional character he could think of and chose The Yellow King.

Before I go on my rant I just wanted to say I love your videos! They're so spot on and super informative. But now onto the rant! Okay hear me out. PLEEEEASEEEE HEAR ME OUT.👏👏👏 In this episode during the laundromat scene (the actual intro to this very youtube video haha) a girl walks in as a customer doing her laundry while Navarro is talking to Qavvik and his buddy about how he's seen the spiral before and told it was some kind of a warning by his grandma. While they are talking a girl walks in and even makes eye contact with Qavvik's friend and Navarro. Going back to episode 2 when Danvers goes to the "Blue King" crab company to question the employees who clean as a side gig at the Tsalal Station. She asks the older woman about the spiral and then the older woman asks "Blair" (the girl who was abused in episode 1 and Navarro saw to it at the crab company) and she say's no. BUT then walks away with a very odd facial expression that is definitely meant for the viewer to see. It is the same girl. I know it is. She's has to be involved somehow. Please someone back me up here haha.

There are two shots in episode 3 of Wheeler’s van & house. 1 when Danvers is telling Pete her version of the wheeler story… but a second similar shot in the opening credits there is the same view of the van in the same position BUT it’s shown through a car windshield and the windshield/car appear to have been in a wreck. (The opening credits shot immediately follows the second under water animal skull) Suspicion is Danvers windshield after a drunken wreck. Back to the her telling Pete…, Wheeler whistles Twist and Shout… I think he is taunting Danvers with in something related to the crash that maybe killed her boy and husband and wheeler was connected somehow. Maybe she was drunk, he was drunk and crashed the car killing while that song played on the radio

Another fun take, nice father/son juxta metaphor. So the spiral is a warning not a supernatural, looks like plain human evil again. Who shot Wheeler? Danvers is shown approaching from the left...another egg in this episode is missing-fingers Blair showing up at the laundromat...among friends with a purpose? And no surprise Ted for mayor is dirty, we knew Hank was. Psyched for the finale.

I have a big feeling all the S1 connections are just coincidences and this is just a completely separated story from part 1. No carcosa, yellow king, Tuttle family cult, etc. Just a Tuttle company, the spiral being a hunter marker, and it just being a story of the mining company and Tsalal tweaking pollution reports. With Annie’s boyfriend killing the staff after finding out they killed Annie seeing how much pollution there really was under the ice from the mine.

Poor Otis. I used to be that guy. Clean for going on 25 years apart from one relapse during the worst of Covid & lockdowns, as I had to work when the whole place was shut-in and isolated and the loneliness, pressure, and boredom brought my old frenemy back into my life, but not for long (around 5 months, and I got straight and back on the wagon) and I could so easily have found myself in a situation where I was a convenient mark, patsy, fall-guy or whatever, for some a-hole dirty cop (ACAB, never forget, even the cops who are good *people* are bad - because the job is bad, it makes you bad) and whether that would have been just a short stretch or a deep hole - it's just dumb luck and l never worked jobs that put me too close to centres of industrial, capitalist, or political power. So many of my peers are gone. Nothing to do with any conspiratorial shenanigans (apart from one...but that was never proven), just a sad, boring, cliched passing in apartments, parks, public bathrooms, and so on. RIP Otis. Here's hoping his death wasn't in vain. In a sense, it already made a difference in the exposure and death of Hank. Poor Peter. Goddam that's rough. He's too good a kid to stay a cop.
