That was a nice touch by the writers having Rust pull out a cigarette and the two detectives allow him to smoke because they wanna hear his story so bad. Pulls the audience in pretty well.

And so began the greatest cop drama ever... I hope that someday they'll get the guys back together. Woody and Matt are a force of nature in this thing. It's been almost five years since this series aired but you could wake me at 2 in the morning and ask me "when did the murder in True Detective take place?" and I'd answer in my best Rust Cohle voice "January the 3rd, 1995" :D
