@@vidmasterK1 I read some of those when it first aired on reddit and it seemed to be a bunch of edge lords mad that Rust started abandoning his nihilism/atheism at the end, which makes total sense because his worldview was born of the extreme trauma with the loss of his daughter/marriage/sanity. This season was a great character study, as well as the phenomenal building of dread throughout, regardless of your opinion of Rust Cohle's "change of heart." I really do think that some people missed the point/critique of Cohle's worldview that I feel Pizzolatto layered throughout. Pizzolatto wasn't kind to those "religious" folks either its just people felt like they had their folk hero and then had the carpet ripped out from under them in the end.

A big part of what made season 1 so good was the slow build and the tearing down of the main characters. The slow build allowed you time to take in story details and certain bits of information that would pay off later. Tearing down the characters means the building back up of them is more compelling. By the time Rust and Marty meet the killer at the end, you really care about them deeply because of all the events that happened leading up to that point. They were finally able to put aside their differences to catch the killer. They were both deeply flawed (and well written) characters who found redemption and friendship at the end.
@chromeviper5273
@chromeviper5273 3 ай бұрын
I didn’t get any of that from when I just finished the first season. To me it felt like Marty and rust were the same characters the entire time, no building up or down. Marty cheats on his wife at beginning and cheats on her again at end. Marty didn’t like rust for 9 out of the 10 episodes. Rust was always babbling non sense even in the last episode. Doesn’t seem like either one of their characters did anything throughout the season that they didn’t do in the first episode.
@knightridernz72
@knightridernz72 Ай бұрын
@@chromeviper5273 Well, I disagree. Not the way I saw it when I watched it. They weren't on the same page at the beginning but by the end they were changed people from their life experiences beforehand. Rust was cut off from reality and constantly babbling his life philosophy to a confused Marty. By the end they were not the same people. They came together in the hunt for Errol Childress. They couldn't hold on to any past grudges because catching Childress was way more important, especially after Rust shows Marty that shocking video. Their character arcs had depth. You knew all the bad shit about them as well as the good and that always makes for rich storytelling and season one was the only season that we got that.
@chromeviper5273
@chromeviper5273 Ай бұрын
@@knightridernz72 I don’t think my stance is one that you can agree or disagree to as I state literally what happens in the show. The same reason his marriage was in shambles at the beginning of the show is the same reason it’s in shambles at the end. Also how were they not on the same page in the beginning if rust literally tampered with a crime scene to save Marty from being fired. That’s not just something you do for anyone especially given the severe consequences both would receive if they ever was caught. What about Marty going along with rust doing drugs and kidnapping the biker guy? They definitely were on the same page from the beginning to end.
@knightridernz72
@knightridernz72 Ай бұрын
@@chromeviper5273 I don't think so. They didn't know each other that well at the beginning. They might've been on the same page with the case but as people, they definitely weren't. Rust was distant and in his own head and Marty was a bit bewildered by his odd behaviour. As cops, they cared about the case. As people outside their jobs, they were so far apart mentally and emotionally. By the time they reunited years later, they were both different people. Rust was more chilled out and so was Marty. Rust wasn't talking oddly anymore and Marty had accepted his place in his life not having his family around. Maybe a chunk of them hadn't changed much but they're both victims of their shitty pasts who've come to accept their fate. Outside that they wanted to complete the case they started years ago. Two different timelines. The first one is where they were younger, full of themselves and chaotic. The second one shows them older, more beat up, and giving less of a shit about things they cared about when they were young cops. That's what I see.

So my all time favorite show is Breaking Bad, but it took BrBa five seasons and 62 episodes to achieve what I consider television perfection. The first season of True Detective achieved that same perfection and only needed 8 episodes to do so. It is a masterpiece. You can watch the first season ten times and always pick up something new. The only negative I can say is that it left me wanting more but the seasons that followed dropped in quality.

@titoslounge1946
@titoslounge1946 Ай бұрын
The interview aspect is a way to reveal the story. It was also used to determine if Rust was involved in the Tuttle death. By asking Marty about Rust, we determine if he was a prime suspect and also get exposition on their relationship. Also Rust was working on this case from 1995 to 2012. It wasn’t just two episodes spent on determining the killer. The show isn’t just a clue hunting detective show, it’s a social commentary too. That’s why it’s good.

Most people that watch these type of shows like to know why the killer did it or how and what was the reason and they didn’t explore any of that.
