Hi Tony, I have just bought a second hand Discovery 3.3 with a Suzi 15hp. Also live in the Redlands. Keen to understand how you set up your transducer in terms of parts required - RTM in Capalaba sell all the railblaza fittings. I'm also keen to know where you got your boat numbers made up as we are using adhesive ones right now and am expecting them to peel off at some point. Best regards, Rob.

Hi Rob, congrats on your purchase! I think you can buy the transducer kit as a package but then you might have to buy a extra hinged adapter to go from vertical to horizontal if you are coming out of the top starport. You could add a starport to the side but because I had the adapter all ready I just placed the additional port on top of the tube. You can also get a sounder mount to go into the starport which is what I have though plenty of people just screw it to the top of the seat. I also purchased a FPV battery to run it all, from memory I bought that from Sunstate Hobie who also stock heaps of railblaza. Hope to see you on the water. Tony

Thanks for the review Tony. I like your fishing set up. Rod from True Kit suggested hanging the transducer off a QuickLoc backing plate. Do you think that would work? Also, I read that people have trouble getting the rego numbers to stick PVC? Was that your experience? I'm just waiting for mine to come out of customs in Brisbane.

Hi Terry, yes I have seen that somewhere, it had the sam type of holes cut in it so it was removable like the wheels so it didn’t get in the way when folding the boat. I think another option might be to just put the transducer in the little well just in front of the transom as I noticed a bit of water just sits there so it could be like a wet hull mount? I heard the same about the letters and didn’t really want to paint them on in case I ever want to either sell the boat as a tender or go to a small motor that doesn’t require rego. hopefully these will continue to work. Hopefully you will get yours soon and can get out there!

@@Australiais Thanks Tony. I'll definitely check out mounting it in that little well, but I was wondering if there would be ventilation from the tunnel hull as the boat is at planing speeds? I was also concerned about poor readings on the plane from the wheel bracket mount due to the same thing. I'm keen to see how your setup evolves as you have more trips out fishing. Any advice you may have will be gratefully accepted. I've only fished out of tinnies and kayaks in the past. Please feel free to pm me for a chat.

@@terrytailor you could be right about the cavitation in those spots, I was surprised my mount held bottom at all speeds where it was always a challenge with transom mounted ones in the tinnys I have had. I did get a little prop cavitation in some really rough water that I didn’t film (cause I was holding on!) but mostly it was good with a standard prop.

@@Australiais At least it's good to know that there is a way to get a good sounding reading. Rod Dawson seems to suggest that the cupped Solas propellers hold the water better. How wet and uncomfortable was it in the rough stuff? I've had times off Kalinga Bank when the tide is running against the wind that I could hardly make headway in my 4.1m Bass tracker!

Hi Graeme, great idea. we should actually have a flotilla somewhere one day for all to chat and compare. I don’t get too much cavitation but plenty of spray off the front of the motor. my next job will be to fit a flap on the transom to block some of it coming through. cheers

Hi mate, I have a friend in sales/printing who did me a favour and printed it up. You will find most print shops will be able to do it or some sign companies may just do it for a few beers as it is a pretty small job and probably not worth billing. Good luck.

What are the main benefits of this you have found over a tinnie?

Hi Jas, we travel a lot with a caravan in tow. Previously I had the rooftop tinny and it was fine, however the weight of the tinny plus boat loaders etc and the added wind resistance all proved less than ideal. With the True Kit I can pack it all down inside the Landcruiser or on occasion load it onto the roof inflated for short periods. All up less weight, wind resistance and more secure locked in the back of the car when leaving the vehicle for extended periods. Don’t get me wrong, it is not perfect and there will be a lot of benefits the tinny will have over the inflatable but this just works for us now. Thanks for watching Tony

I think durability will probably be the biggest, though you can repair yourself along the road if you have patches whereas with a tinny you would need to take somewhere. Probably just need to take extra care when coming into rocky shores etc. otherwise it is no more or less comfortable than any other small boat I have owned and easy to manoeuvre around.

Hi, how did you finding man handling the heavier 4 stroke from the car to the transom. I have the 3.3m true kit and are still trying to decide between the 4 stroke ~ 39kg and a two stroke ~ 30kg. What made you decide to go with the 4 stroke....regards Brett

@@brettmcmurchy130 hi Brett, probably the main reason was that I have found on previous motors that the 2 strokes have more of a residual oil and fuel smell when kept in the back of the car. The extra kilos aren’t too bad when loading into the car with the Almac trolley (wouldn’t notice the difference) but may be an issue when transferring the motor from the trolley to the transom.
