The point isn’t how much I make or save by working remote. The point is if I take a 10% pay cut the company is making 10% more profit, plus the increase from not having an office. No way, I wouldn’t take a 10% pay cut just so they can make more profit.

Exactly: an up to 20% cut in work-hours... the commute for 'only' a 10% pay-cut sounds good. But actively providing the 11.000 savings by doing them the favor the video starts with... AND add the paycut to that... I also would have answered no. Not entirely sure I would have the same conviction when comparing 2 job-offers though.

Depending on the job and the distance to get there, I honestly think it's healthier to actually go to work. My home is my haven, I don't want to polute it with work stuff. It's also nice to see your coworkers and hang out at lunch. Maybe go for drinks later? That said, if your work is completely computer managed and it takes an hour to get to the office, sure, go ahead and work from home. Just make sure you take long walks or jog or something because it's not healthy staying inside all day.

I would take a pay cut if it meant remote work not just because of the math involved, but also because in addition to the work spent you also expend more energy AND you also commute. I work way more efficiently home, and as an ND person having to go into an office or just leave my home is requiring me to spent way more energy. I would rather have less money even if it wouldnt be compensated by cheap housing or no costs on gas. And yea i would move on if my management wouldnt appreciate my work. I had a situation like that not long ago and i definitelly was silent quitting at the least. I burned myself out, worked overtime, all for a manager who didnt appreciate or support me and who stabbed me in the back to get a promotion herself. I am not doing that again.

At 8:00 it points at a self-referential issue I have with some of these questions. It started with 'this is the situation and the corresponding estimate. Is the actual number lower or higher?' (Including the opening: Is the cost to a (somewhat functioning) company when an employee works from home, bigger or smaller than zero?) But this one "The number of people who "don't quit jobs they quit managers (feedback edition)" is exactly 50%" Is obviously false, and set-up to present the either upcoming substantially higher, or substantially lower as a gotya, without significantly distinguishing between those options. Exactly the way "the manager people quit" would do. "Wow what a twist"

The 10% pay cut for working remotely is a reality for many reasons. I earn about 35% less than my equivalent in-person colleagues, but for my mental health it's more than worth the pay cut. Autism, ADHD, and social anxiety make in-person work very very difficult long-term. Even though my paycheck is much less than it could be if I worked in the office, I'm earning more than I've ever earned over a 3-year average because I used to work my butt off until I burned out, then had to leave. At home, the burn-out has been easier to avoid.

I'd definitely take the pay cut, but not leave just due to a bad manager. With my health, remote is the only way I can work at all, so 10% less of any amount of money is more than zero. At the same time, with large health-related expenses and a limited pool of potential careers, any decision to quit has to be thoroughly thought out. The only reasons I can imagine for quitting in my situation would be a return to the office mandate and/or pay that is not keeping up with inflation.

One of the factors companies are considering for why they're trying to force people back into the office are the tax breaks they get from the local government. Cities will give out incentives for companies that bring larger groups of employees into the office because more people in the area means local businesses see more customers and that makes owners more willing to invest in the city. Companies that are largely work from home don't get those incentives.

Working from home saves money. But companies are not there to save money, but to earn more money then they spend. So, if you need interaction between coworkers, home office is a killer. For innovation you need people who fire up each others neurons. That does not happen on-line. So it is not an universal good. But... that being said, it is probably much better, than cubicals in callcenters.

1. Try the indirect method: Friday morning, announce to your boss the time you will be leaving. Set the tone. Don't ask for permission. Remind the boss after lunch or 3 hours before your departure time. If they want a reason: granny isn't so well and I'm checking on her, ....I'm taking my parrot to flight school because it never really learned.....I'm joining a bookclub which meets at XYZ time. 2. Laura, in all of her videos, is showing you the direct method already. Be polite, be firm, and be clear that you prefer your personal time even more than overtime. Set the tone/expectation that you will be departing every Friday afternoon by XYZ. Somebody will dislike it, but those people are in every work environment. Be strong and good luck.

Taking a 10% pay cut would hurt me a lot more than remote work would help. For me, gas isn’t all that expensive because I drive an efficient car and it’s just relatively cheap where I live. I haven’t worked a full year at my job and current house yet, but I’ve extrapolated my fuel cost to be around $800/year. A 10% pay cut would be $6,750. Then I’d also increase my utility usage because I’d need to maintain my house’s temperature and I’d be using my own facilities throughout the day. My rent is also really cheap, not just for my area but in general. That pay hit would be a serious hindrance. I also don’t have a desk as of yet and have enough to pay on my furniture loan as it is
