Bronson Pinchot's acting here is sadly underrated. He PERFECTS a person who is so nervous that these crazy smiles and exaggerated out of control facial twitches come forward despite his best efforts to act casual. He also PERFECTLY captures the timing of thinking of what is the correct casual response, which makes it very jerky, while trying to be as CLOSE to casual without seeming too obvioiusly NOT-CASUAL. He dances the perfect line of someone you wouldn't necessarily KNOW is a rat, but is giving off odd signs that something is up. Its a beautiful performance.

@Ned Kelly There's a copy of the original script somewhere on the internet. I read it once, but I can't find it now. It had the same scenes and dialog but was told out of sequence, starting with Drexel getting shot i think, and jumping back and forward from there. Major difference was at the end, Clarence died, he didn't live with one eye shot out. And Alabama had a breakdown in her car reading the napkin that says "you're so cool", and she calls him an asshole since he's dead now, and she drives off with all the money. Much better ending in my opinion, makes the whole movie a question of "was it worth it"?

They honesty don't. In my opinion, the last golden age of film was the 80s and 90s. The 2000s was a transitional decade, with the saturation of superhero and franchise films essentially muscling out the auteurs of the 90s. Movies like this are going to be few and far between, as long as Hollywood is more interested in cartoons than they are in telling stories about people.
