I don't know about other states, but in Texas, lawyers have to defend criminals occasionally due to the fact that the person can't afford an attorney. They're called public defenders at that point, and the court assigns them the case. They don't have a choice. I'm sure the attorneys aren't in love with these types of cases. Especially since they're doing it for free.

Totally true. I was in my fifties and a widow when I could no longer afford the rent on my own apartment even working full time. I needed the help of my mother, but unfortunately she refused to help me. I ended up working and trying to live in my car which didn't last very long. Finally I got the help of social services but the whole thing was so traumatic that I never worked again. In this case, being that the man was a felon, he most probably was unable to rent anything. The same mother who refused help to me bought my brother, a felon, multiple houses because nobody would rent to him...

The prices in Seattle are truly skyrocketing & I provide my Grandma care so it’s a win-win. I do not think him being 42 & living at home is relevant (the word we live in is expensive). That was my only criticism-but I’m not harping on that. You both are wonderful & provide great insights.
