I have never heard a better teaching on Grace than this. It awoke in me a new love for God and gave me the desire to share the message with anyone who is willing to listen and talk about it. On my worst day I am Christ in Dave. God is crazy about me and you and is over the top extravagant in His expression of that love.

For alot of us including me... this is our story. We got caught up in the do better be better then maybe God will love us. When in the end we find ourselves worn out by religion empty and disenchanted with what we thought was where we were supposed to be. The reality is we want more than that we want the real relationship with the one who created us. The one with whom we were designed and created to be in relationship with. Without that it's like not knowing how to breathe.

Having lived as a part of this community of Grace since before this was posted, I have been able to walk in the light with my life. Not being afraid to be judged, but facing sin with my Savior by my side I am dealing with not only the sins that I have committed but also those that have been committed against me, taking it all to the cross. Trusting that God has dealt with it so now I can forgive, others and myself. I was not given power over sin, but I was given a savior who I can submit/surrender/trust. I haven't made it to perfection, but i know where to go when i struggle with life, not just with "sin". Thanks any of my friends who see this for loving me well.

Try watching it again without pre-judging it but just listening and let it speak to you and don't think of it as a trial but a blessing to work with God rather than by yourself to get through your sin. Also don't think of it as a task but as the start of a life change because it is a journey called life and God will help you through it rather than you trying to do it alone. I found that when I try doing it alone I usually mess it up and make things harder than need be. Good luck

I am assigned to watch this for a class. This is the second video by John Lynch I've had to watch. As a pastor, former missionary, and professional exegete with Wycliffe Bible Translators, I have to say that this ripped my heart out initially. Not because of there isn't beautiful treasure in this, but because he seemed to set that treasure against things that are also beautiful treasure. He sets up false dichotomies between things that are friends in Scripture. For instance, he says we all come to a fork in the road where we must chose between "trusting God" and "pleasing Him." He makes the "pleasing God" path have a tone and attitude of performance. Dear friends, as someone who loves God and reads his word, trusting God is viewed as a friend to pleasing God. The two paths are friends, not enemies. Both messages from Mr. Lynch were riddled with this kind of false dichotomies. This flattening of things that are very textured in scripture. This narrowing of grace to the non-effort oriented parts of the Christian life, and not the effort-related parts. Let me share a verse: Ephesians 5:8-10 "For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light ... and find out what pleases the Lord." (Ephsians 5:8-10) Notice part 1 of the verse talks about our true identity. Understanding this is healthy and huge! Mr. Lynch emphasizes this and that is wonderful! But Notice part 2 of the verse says in direct response to this that the healthy response to understanding part 1 (our identity as children of light) is to "find out what pleases God." Can you see? Understanding my identity as an accepted son of God-- and child of light is not opposed to trying to please him. In Paul's theology, the two are side by side as friends! As healthily connected! The first can and should healthily motivate the second. Where get it wrong is in trying to do part 2 (find out what pleases him) to EARN part 1 (our identity as his beloved child). THAT, I agree is performance. But Mr. Lynch is not careful at clarifying that! He seems to throw out the baby (trying to please God) with the bathwater (trying to please God IN ORDER TO EARN our identity). The baby is good! Trying to please God can be and is healthy and good when properly understood! ***Then I got to the 21 minute mark and he clarified that we can walk the "please Him" path WITH trust, so we really don't have to choose one or the other! Pfew!! But I wish he would have said that from the beginning! I think he tries to "hook" people by saying something edgy and controversial and maybe he has a kind pastoral reason for doing that. The other video was more concerning. Because there are two different kinds of parts in the Christian life: There's the passive parts (trust, rest, receive) and the active parts (pursue (1 Tim 6) fight, make every effort (2 Pt 1:5-7). BOTH parts are fueled by grace. Grace is like filling up the car with gas. Pursuing holiness (Hebrews 12:14) and the active commands of the New Testament is like driving the car. The two are distinct. But not enemies. In fact, grace is what fuels all the driving. We don't read a message: "Receive God's grace, then sit back and do nothing while God helps you live out your new identity." It's "Receive God's grace, now 'run' after living out your new identity (Heb 12:1-2), it's 'put your sins to death' (Col 3:5), because they belong to the old you not the new you. Notice how these active commands are given to us! We have a part to play! Does it earn us grace? No. That's legalism. But there is still a healthy way to follow those commands and we need them or they wouldn't be there! A passive dominated Christian life is apparently not healthy. So we take the grace and run! And its all motivated by grace and our identity as holy ones. Paul even said "I beat my body and make it my slave" (using imagery from athletic training, I believe, not literally)-- but the point is, he was saying point blank-- disciplining yourself for godliness is good! It's good! It's good! YES you'll stumble (James says this), YES you'll get tired (Hebrews 12 says this), YES you'll hear the enemy whisper lies and discouragement in your ear. Take aim at the discouragement. Don't take it as a sign that you are completely doing things wrong and not resting in grace. No-- if you're getting tired and discouraged congratulations! It's what every Christian has experienced! It's normal! You haven't necessarily been hoodwinked by religion. Paul knew discouragement and he followed the way of grace to the fullest! We have to take aim at the discouragement, not re-write healthy Christianity and take out all of the effort-oriented commands. Recognize its the enemy trying to get you down. Soak in more grace, and use it as fuel to "get up" -- "make those weak knees strong and those lame legs strong and get up and run" (I'm paraphrasing Hebrews 12), and remember that God is disciplining you because he loves you! This is literally what any good Father does for his kids. Now THAT is the kind of encouragement I see the Holy Spirit giving believers who are getting discouraged and tired in the pursuit or righteousness. The Bible is incredibly gentle and wise pastorally. And it gives us the perfect forms of encouragement-- healthy encouragement. I love Mr. Lynch's emphasis on Grace and on realizing Jesus has his arms around us AS we fight. Let's not be afraid of fighting! Every command of the New Testament comes with the promise of batteries (grace) included. In other words, if Christ commands it, Christ will empower it. Yes, there are lots of active healthy commands in the New Testament and none of them are burdensom (1 John 5:3), because grace is promised - a level of grace sufficient to try and win, as long as we don't give up. And its a lifelong battle to live out who we truly are now as saints. We can do it! We can't do it without grace but we CAN do it with grace! And grace involves us rising up and obeying the commands! We "will reap a harvest" if we do not give up! Don't use grace as an excuse to give up and go passive. Use it as fuel to keep going and not give up! That is what I hear the Holy Spirit saying to grace-oriented Christians in the New Testament, over and over again THAT is the form of encouragement I hear. Let us fill our tanks up with fresh grace from this message and use it to keep going and not give up! I decided to do a simple word study of the phrase "pleasing God" in the New Testament. I'll attach the results of that survey for those interested: drive.google.com/file/d/1FFXQ6nNzexlqBeUj2DSwx9IflHzZvq2o/view?usp=sharing

John bevere does an incredible teaching on Grace, where he defines it as not just God’s mercy (though that’s part of it), but it’s the empowerment to live out the life God calls us to live. I think that’s more in line with what you’re saying. This guy is spot on about God’s unconditional love for us, so I’m not detracting from that at all. But I think the real definition of the word grace carries action/striving/works inside it - and that each of those things are powered by this supernatural substance of grace which God gives freely to all who ask.

Excellent reply. I felt the same way when hearing this message. The two roads are false dichotomies. I feel the essence of his message is on the right track. But he falls into the trap of topical teaching and minimally supports his claims with Scripture. Because of that, he ends up in eisegesis instead of exegesis. Unfortunately many of his claims are not biblically accurate and is critical of the pursuit of godliness. The pursuit of godliness is a biblical command written all over the OT and NT. This pursuit does not yield eternal life, as this gift is by faith alone. But the Christian is saved for good works by pursuing godly choices and behavior. The rooms of grace and good intentions are not enemies, but friends as you say.

@@LuisArmadaJr You are 100% accurate in your assessment, in my opinion. He pits one excellent and God-blessed thing against another excellent and God-blessed thing. Even effort is commanded in 2 Peter 1. All is grace. Sometimes though, people flatten grace to only include the passive virtues like trust, belief, rest. The fact is, grace is equally involved in the active virtues (like pursuing righteousness (1 Tim 6:18), running the race (Heb 12:1-3), and killing off sin (Col 3:5) as it is in the passive virtues. I'll say that again, grace is every bit as much involved in the active disciplines as it in the passive disciplines. Paul understood this: "I worked harder than all of them-yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me." (1 Cor 15:10). It is true, grace fuels resting and trusting (Isaiah 30:15). It also fuels running. His picture and understanding of grace is too flat. I love his heart. It's just his exegesis is off when he makes things that are friends in Scripture into enemies. Others do this with fear of God vs. love of God. As if they work against each other rather than support and enhance one another. We need more people actually doing word studies on these things, getting out their concordances and looking up the occurrences of words like "fear" or "effort" or "trust", etc, and actually looking up all the verses that talk about them to get a wider picture of what God himself says about these topics. Not just noticing conceptual differences and pitting them off as enemies of one another. I hope listeners can take the meat that is here and spit out the bones. There is some good meat! His love for the passive disciplines is golden! Just need some discernment not to get jaded against some other beautiful things (like effort, and perseverance, and running, and fighting, and killing off sin) that he seems jaded against. Eat the meat, spit out the bones.

PERFORMING for acceptance is an art form that Hollywood has perfected, We validate performances, acting as if, with applause and golden statues. Standing before God I am naked, embarrassed, ashamed because I cannot be holy enough. Will I be rejected, cast out if i lie, if i gossip, if i cheat on my taxes? "You better NOT shout, lie, lust or steal cuz God is watching, listening...making a list of who is naughty and nice." Santa is a legalist, but God is full of mercy and grace.

I have been a Christian for over 30 year's. I have been in leadership 28 of those years. I have seen the hiding and the competitive side of ministry and it sickens me. 5 years ago the Holy Spirit slowly but surely lead me out of the mixture gospel into that scandalous message of grace. Remember that the goodness of God leads us to repentance, not the scowl of an angry disapproving Father. Conviction is an affirmation of the identity already provided by the cross and the person of Christ who dwells in us . Conviction calls us up higher and reminds us who we really are by revealing who He has always been and will never change.

i understand what ur saying about the room of grace. I think what he was trying to say though was that everyone admitted being imperfect and the point was that u cant really work on sin unless u trust God to do it for you. I agree id rather just not think about sin sometimes. so i understand. but it is in our lives no doubt about that. But yea the room of grace was about being real, and the kind of love and comfort that comes with that. thats what i thought of it

I believe trusting God pleases God, and if I truly trust God I will turn from sin because I know he wants what is best for me. It is not an either-or it is a both. His grace empowers me to overcome sin that is why I must turn to him confess and ask him to help me overcome. By his grace, he is changing me from glory to glory but I must do my part by obeying him and his word. David prayed search me and know me see if there is any wicked way in me and create in me a clean heart, and renew a right spirit within me. I must face my sin and deal with it, but I don't have to do it all alone God's grace is sufficient. I cannot confuse God's love for his approval. God will always love me but he does not always approve of me. We must be holy as he is holy, that is New Testament I Peter 1:16.

A study of the story of King Baldwin is instructive. Often our true self is so repulsive, we seek out filial community by helping others not get bogged down in what bogs us down- we mask up. The old addage that faith without works being a comfortable doctrine can inform this two road story. God loves us all and always. His love is not His action....it does not need action to be His love. We need His actions more than His love. His love minus action is Jesus minus the cross- unthinkable. Be loved, be saved, be lost in His love, be saved by His loss- He loves it when we let Him love us

I appeciate Brian Gammill's comment below as he brings balance to this good message. Hopefully he sees that we can't understand how to fear the Lord until we realize and believe deep in our hearts that God is a good Father, who always gives us bread instead of a stone, and that this goodness is the foundation of our relationship with Him. Unfortunately many Christians (for many reasons) don't receive this foundation, and the path of their Christianity takes a wrong turn early in its infancy and they compensate for their lack of an intimate relationship with Christ by wearing masks. None of us remember being an infant or a very young child, but it's at this time that we bond with our earthly parents and eventually understand that the foundation of our relationship with them is unconditional love. As we grow in their care we learn to fear them in a healthy way, a way that generates honor toward them, and any punishment we receive from them is understood as proper correction for incorrect actions/attitudes, NOT for a lack of love on their part toward us. Only this understanding of our heavenly Father allows us to walk in mature balance and wholeness, and John's ministry is desperately needed to reset on the right path the multitudes who tragically missed the trail marker that would have kept them on the path of grace.

This is a sermon with many encouraging points and self-evident insights, to which most of the comments left by viewers attest. Unfortunately, the following statements are at the extreme other end of the spectrum: 27:43 - 32:45 - The New Testament gamble is God saying, "...What if I told them that I'm their saviour and that they're going to heaven no matter what and that it's a done deal?...That is a lot of sin, my my my, and we'll work on it when you're ready, kid. I've got you covered." Sorry, but after reading the scriptures for much of my life, these statements present a gospel message I just don't recognize. If there was a passage that they do bring to mind, it would be Jude 3-4. Peace.

The new covenant is that God will write His Law in our minds and on our hearts. HIs law makes us righteous, it sanctifies us. We're not going to heaven no matter what. We're going to His Kingdom on the earth in Israel. There’s a promise to those who keep God’s commandments. We will share in the tree of life in the Holy City. Rev 22:14-15 "Blessed are those who wash their robes, so that they may have the right to the tree of life, and may enter by the gates into the city. Outside are the dogs and the sorcerers and the immoral persons and the murderers and the idolaters, and everyone who loves and practices lying." The Bible says something different than what you're saying.

I just saw John Lynch this week end at the church I go to, He gave his grace message, it was really something , my wife loved it, as for me. John said God loves us just like we are, He did not distinguish between the sheep of God or the world who were in the building with the sheep, If God loves people just like they are, then why did Jesus have to go to the cross, I know for a fact that When I feel guilty because of a sin it is because God the Holy Spirit has let me know something is a miss in our relationship, I am not condemned but convicted, and God lets me know it! God whats me to repent and sanctify myself of the thing that has been done, it seems everyone want to have a God who will let us continue on our own road with no worries at all, once we are truely save we know we are God's and nothing can separate us from His love, and we know that God is at work within us sanctifying us for Himself, but to imagine a Child of God who never has reason to feel guilt for their sin, when they sin, which is usually everyday shows a illegitimate son-ship, For the Lord corrects them that are His, this is very alarming and seeker sensitive (lets do not offend anyone about the sin in their life) Where has the message gone, that warns the planet of being under the wrath of Almighty God and unless we repent and God saves us we will all be doomed, no one gets saved unless the gospel of Jesus Christ is proclaimed, The Holy Spirit only quickens them who hear the word of God, this message was a feel good message to the world , even sinners who do not know Christ now have no need for concern when guilt comes upon them because you do not have to listen to that voice, this is dangerous people very dangerous, the Apostle Paul said that we have a stinking carcass tied to our backs and we do the thing s that we should not do, if that is the message to the saved what about them who do not know the Holy God of the bible, yes we are forgive, God sees us as holy, blameless and above reproach all because of Jesus, but the only reason we get to believe that is because God saved us, God made us aware of our sin and His Holiness and because He gave us faith to believe what He has done for us and we learn all of that all of our knowledge come from scripture that the Holy Spirit revels to us , making me think that guilt or even conviction of my sins is something other then God correcting me is wrong or worst making a unsaved person think that they are OK is very messed up,

God loved us while we were yet sinners, and he did not want to leave us that way, that is why he called us into a relationship with HIm, through His Son Jesus Christ. But i think you missed some of JOhn's point, Even after salvation, we have no power over sin. It is sin that no longer has power over us. We are totally dependant on Christ to deal with all of our sin. It is only with in the bounds of God's grace that we can have victory, we can not gain victory out of our own doing life right. Repentence is not us getting our act together, i would suggest that repentance is us takign our eyes off of the sin and turning our eyes to God, it is through maturing that we sin less, not through striving against sin. The message is not that we get off easy if we take the road of grace, it is we are more dependant on God then people who think God saved them now it is up to them to do life right. Christ message was IMHO was that we are nto alone in this anymore, we have Christ in us, it is no longer I who lives. but that is my two cents on your post. more than willing to engage in more conversation.

Hey Matt, I see that I am 2 years late, but unless John was on crack that day, he wouldn't teach what you are saying. I hope you don't miss the truth of what he is teaching, because it's beautiful.

I would say you need trust/faith to please God (Hebrews 11:6), but then once you have that faith/trust, it is not at all an enemy of the goal of living to please Him in our daily lives! I think he made a false dichotomy. In the New Testament, trusting God and pleasing God are actually both healthy goals every Christian is actively encouraged to go after! I would be interested to know what scripture teaches that God-Holy Spirit causes us to experience guilt because of our sin.

I personally think that the implication is towards shame rather than guilt, even though the word guilt is used. I have learned that guilt is God given in that guilt says, "I have done something bad" and that I need to restore. But shame says "I AM bad" and there is no hope for restoration of either party, Perhaps this is the difference between Godly sorrow and worldly sorrow?

Be doers of the Word and not hearers only I believe that these aren't the two roads. Hyper-grace is false teaching and God can end HIs grace whenever He wants to. Ananais and Sapphira are great examples. Following Jesus isn't empty. He said "IF you abide in me, you keep my commandments." We're called to action.

I'm curious why you even left a comment. What brought you to watch the video. No one was speak hate or condemnation. There is great encouragement here. My heart breaks that you are so hurt that you want to hurt others with your comment. Perhaps if you seek this"fairytale"as you call it,you might just be blown away by an awesome God that loves you and was crazy enough to take all your sin(guilt, shame, hurt, bad choices) and in exchange accept you totally through his sacrifice, why mock that?

There's no such thing as too much grace. We either have either received the grace of God or we haven't. There is no middle ground. We contribute nothing to our salvation except the sin that made it necessary for Jesus to die in our place.

While some of this is ok, the description of the room of grace is sad. Even with grace, sin is the issue and we'll be working on sin? That sounds so depressing. That's like my children never being able to relax with me, but together we'd look at what I define as 'sin' in their life and then together we'd try to work on that sin. Ugh! Life and love is beautiful and I can't believe it's about working on my 'sin' all the time. Instead find what makes you feel alive and then go live life well!

I realize that the message of grace is extremely popular, as evidenced by the nearly universal positive comments about this video. The problem is that listeners are not scrutinizing this message with the whole witness of the holy Scriptures. Though it may appear to be biblically orthodox, I think this is subtle and deceptive teaching that can lead to the wrong kind of freedom. This message has elements of truth, but it seems to shun core concepts like the fear of the Lord. Being made to feel guilty for our sin is the work of the Holy Spirit and leads God's people to repentance and righteousness. Grace too often is an excuse to view God as your "friend" without balancing that with awesome and fearful awareness that He is also judge. The righteousness of God's people should be real, not just imaginary, a legal status or a future hope based on an intellectual trust in a particular theology. I pray that God's people can discern between the message of grace and the message of the Kingdom. Fear the Lord, but do not fear feeling guilty or sorrowful for your sin, for the Holy Spirit may use those feelings to bring true healing.

This is the message of Romans in a nutshell. Grace is extremely popular because it was God's grace that saved us. The Truth of the message is we are imputed with his righteousness so if he is perfect how shall we perfect, perfect righteousness? Romans 4 talks of faith and how Abraham was counted righteous on bases of faith not works. Gal. 3:1 -4:31 is the Gospel of grace explained. Galatians also being the antidote to legalism. We have freedom in Christ and he isnt saying its free license to abuse God's grace but to live in this TRUTH. We were chained and God broke those chains why stay chained up everytime we sin when we can walk away free. Being free is trusting Christs work and not our own (eph2:8-9). Dont except wooden nickles my friend. Stop striving start thriving!

Iz G God's grace is that He revealed himself to us. We cannot know God's will or God's ways through philosophical speculation, analyzing life experience or natural phenomena. Abraham was counted as righteous because of his "faith", but his faith was synonymous with his faithfulness. As such, you cannot separate faith from works. Faith without works (application/faithfulness) is dead. This is what I am trying to point out. One-dimensional (or one-book) analysis of grace doesn't fit with the whole testimony of the Scriptures.
@izg2383
@izg2383 10 жыл бұрын
If works and faith can not be separated then ephesians 2:8-9 becomes nullified. Galatians is the antidote to human legalism. Romans reveals our freedom in Christ. It is by his work we are saved not our own doing so no man should boast. However I am not in this to debate and i am sure you are not either because it will get us nowhere.

Iz G If you continue reading in Ephesians 2 (verse 10), you will see that we are rescued (saved) in order to do good works. This is why God reveals things to us: so that we will obey his commandments. I am not into futile arguments but I am interested in what is true. In this case, I am concerned that many Christians (and listeners of this message of grace) do not think it matters how they live. The Scriptures refute such an interpretation of Romans and Galatians and any other passages that talk about grace and salvation.

Like I said earlier grace isnt license to do what we want but the fact is that we are saved by grace not our works plus faith.

Joe Hallam Joe, I am truly sorry you felt so attacked and condescended to. I know you may not sense that I mean that, but I do. I have a rather wry sense of humor and my pride leads me to forget that it's not always understood. I hope you can forgive me. I made my comment because for years - like Saul/Paul - I zealously strived for something that I later discovered Romans says is already done. Anyway... God loves you SO MUCH and that gives you amazing worth and value. Even if I disagree with you, (and I do,) how could I not give you the honor, the respect, and love that His love for you deserves? And you bet; I'll keep asking God to provide me deeper and sharper spiritual discernment.
