The point of the Gordy chimp story is actually the general theme of the entire film-the exploitation of life in the pursuit of a spectacle, which usually resulted in innocent life being harmed or, worse, killed. From the chimp on that show, to the horse freaking out when the commercial people wouldn't listen to OJ's plea to let it rest, to Jupe's fatal attempt to create a spectacle out of the alien creature.
@BJMurphy
@BJMurphy Жыл бұрын
@@blaketarno4145 well, their initial goal wasn't to kill the creature. That came as a result of self-defense. But it all did occur due to their attempts to get that "Oprah shot." But even then, there at the end, they no longer cared about that. They didn't even pick up that photo from the well, focusing instead on each other, happy to still be alive.
@AteezHoney

Yes! And also the lengths people go through to witness and capture a spectacle. The actors and audience members that were killed by Gordy, the horses that died for the monster, Jupe and the people at the show died, the TMZ guy died and the photographer guy died all in order to witness or capture the spectacle. It's a never ending cycle because people will always want to see it so people will never stop exploiting things in order to provide the spectacle. We even see it at the end when Emerald took the picture instead of hiding. There's also a subtle and beautiful point that Peele made was when OJ had the accident with the horse at the shoot and they quickly switched it out for a CGI horse when they could've just done that in the first place.

I don't know how much or little it has been talked about but I heard a bit from Bobby Lee on his podcast but Jordan put a little Easter egg in the Jupes office with the poster of Gordy with "MAD" on it. Jordan made himself Gordy to show his frustration with his time at MADtv and how things ended with him. Towards the end of Jordan's reign on MAD he was supposed to transition to SNL but MAD ended screwing up that deal due to contract disputes and scheduling. So I thought that was a fun Easter egg especially with the themes he had in this movie.

For those wondering about the people/victims. Jean Jacket is basically like a squid, it sucks prey up inside its mouth and the inner muscles push it into the stomach (the inside scene with the human victims) where it is digested alive. Hence all the screaming. But since it ate the horse statue/replica, that thing was big and not organic so it clogged Jean Jacket up. And then it ate the big group of people, while previously it only ate a single horse at a time (Jupe was feeding it with horses for six months). Basically it overfed and could not even swallow properly, so it finally just crushed all the people (the scene were all the screams stopped suddenly) and expelled the junk out. That is why the blood rained over the house. And yes, the inspiration for Jean Jacket is sea life like squids, octopus and cuttlefish + biblically accurate angels. There is a theory that Jean Jacket is actually an organism from Earth, like a skywhale, and in ancient times it was mistaken for an angel that guided people into heaven.

Ikr! Makes me think of bears, squirrels, and other wildlife that approach people for food (and become aggressive when they don't get any food from people). It fits perfectly for the general theme of spectacle and exploitation in the movie, since wildlife start begging for food from people because there would've been some unthinking people in the past that fed them to begin with.
@moderndaymedusa82

I think it's important to note that Jean Jacket could have eaten any of them at any point. He was fast enough to do that. The last half of the movie was a warning to the Heywoods because Jean Jacket had been living peacefully on their property for over 6 months with no problems. I think it was just trying to get back to that peaceful coexistence and it was mad that things had changed. You gotta realize that for six months it never at OJ or any of the horses that were in those fields chilling. It just waited to be fed once a week by Jupe (oh and one time it snacked on those hikers but it didn't like all those inorganic things they had with them so humans weren't his favorite). When Jean Jacket felt like the OJ and his friends weren't following the rules, he bucked up on them a little. And it did that intimidation display as a show of dominance. Anyway, I love this movie!!!
@RaptorNX01
@RaptorNX01 Жыл бұрын
I've noticed over many reactions that it seems most miss that Jupe is basically Betty White's character from Lake Placid. that He's the reason the story happens cause he had been feeding the thing. which then ties into the gordy story as that is the reason he's been doing that.

This creature is called an Occulonimbus Edoequus by its creators. It's such a great design meant to be truly alien, as in we have no idea how it works. And when you think of other animals out there in the world, like cuddlefish, jellyfish, octopi, and many others, that can change color, shape, and texture, it seems realistic to me. And the reveal is perfect! That bit in the stomach is scary. It's almost got some biblical Revelations-type of themes going on there where all these gawkers literally get cast into the belly of the beast.
@RaptorNX01
@RaptorNX01 Жыл бұрын
I've read that biblical angels (and the angels from Evangelion) were part of the inspiration for it. so that checks out. But another aspect to it that adds some realism, is that it also seems to be based partly on the concept of solar sails. IE the idea of ships flying thru space using super large, super light sails that catch solar winds. actually the first thing I thought of what it first opened up (in addition to looking a bit like a weather balloon, something skeptics use to hand wave away UFO sightings, despite the things never looking like weather balloons) was an ep of Deep Space nine where two of the main character go on a sort of vacation, flying in an ancient solar sailing ship. it even vaguely looks like Jean Jacket.

Loved the movie as well! SPOILER below: . . . . . . So the point of Gordy in the movie is connected to both the animal behavior of the animals in the movie, where the Chimpanzee that played Gordy was used as a Spectacle (the main thing of the movie, hence the Bible quote) for the show, with them having a real Chimpanzee that was "trained" to be a cast member. However, at its basis, it is still an animal and has specific behaviors. It is said that if you have not established Trust, with a Chimpanzee/Ape/Monkey, and you look it directly it its eyes, it is a sign of Aggression towards them. So with Gordy, being startled by the Balloon and everyone staring at him, he attacked them since they never established Trust with him. Now with Jupe (Steven Yeun's character) he was also somewhat used as Spectacle, as being always the typical Asian character in a white ensemble cast, so he and Gordy found a connection together of being used as Spectacle for showbiz, and had their signature fist bump they shared together of everything's okay. Which is also why, Jupe was spared, because since he had the tablecloth separating him and Gordy, he wasn't directly looking into each others eyes, and Gordy could sense it was Jupe and wanted to give him their signature fist bump, since they trust each other. Which then all ties together of the theme of a "Bad Miracle", with Jupe being spared with Gordy, and OJ being spared the 1st against the UFO/"JeanJacketAlien"

Pretty good take, but you got one thing wrong in my opinion, Gordy doesn't necessarily trust Jupe or at least doesn't have that special connection with him that Jupe might have grown up to think is part of what saved him..... The movie dispels this idea, IMO when it is mentioned that it was only "one of the Chimps that played Gordy" went crazy day and attacked everyone that day. IMO the fact that they had multiple chimps playing Gordy makes it even less likely that Jupe was spared because of a special connection with the Chimp, rather its like you say only survived, by avoiding direct eye contact with it which avoided communicating any attempt to assert dominance over it (unknowingly to a young Jupe), first by transfixing his gaze on the shoe, and then through the veil that the table cloth provided. What I didn't immediately grasp on my first viewing was that Jean Jacket didn't attack Jupiter's landing just because it decided that was "today is going to be the day to finally attack the crowd, for reasons", but instead because it had been conditioned to expect a Horsey meal around that time, but when Jupe couldn't corral Lucky to leave the small pen and run down the hill, Jean Jacket got impatient and came over to lucky instead. Just another example of people (Jupe in this case) treating animal like another prop in their show that is just going to do whatever they command it to without respecting it as a wild animal.
@phousefilms
@phousefilms Жыл бұрын
I think, because Jupe wasn't instantly grabbed by Jean Jacket, he thought he and the "Visitors"had a connection and believed he could use them as entertainment for the crowd. This lead to his and the whole of Jupiters Claim being eaten. I had another theory that, because JJ was "blocked up"(because he ate the fake horse), he tried to remove the blockage by eating more than normal too(as we see, not only are the Star Lasso guests eaten, but EVERYONE in Jupiters Claim, who might not have even seen him.

The true meaning in Nope is never tamed a living thing or be controlled by because of the fear of something spectacle or unusual. The Bible verse or the message in Nope is like a representation of the movie like OJ is Nahum and Emerald is Zephaniah and the spacecraft is the city Nineveh because something spectacle or unusual happened in the city because chaos happened and Nahum thinks that God punish all the sinners inside the city like a lion's den or predator that chewed the citizens of Nineveh.

"Is that a trick? I can't tell if that was a trick, or if it's sick." ...It was a sick trick, bruh. :) I loved this movie. I look at each of the characters as representations of the neurodivergent spectrum. OJ is autism (his difficulties looking people in the eye become a strength that save his life). Em is ADHD (she can't stand still and focus on one thing, hence her many skills she tries to promote and her aversion to the ranch). Angel is anxiety (he's anxious about his ex, about his work performance and about the alien conspiracy). Antlers is depression (chasing those perfect shots to get that release of serotonin, only to come back down and be unsatisfied). Jupe is PTSD (he was exploited as a child actor for entertainment, which resulted in the Gordy's Home incident; he goes on to perpetuate the cycle of abuse by doing the same to his children, which results in another traumatic incident).

Loved this movie. Loved it. The barn scene freaked me the f' out, as I, too, have motion sensor lights and they go on at times that creep you out. Very imaginative to have the alien be the ship. And I loved every single character. For once, in a horror movie, the characters may take chances, but they never do anything stupid. Angel saves himself by using his brain even at a desperate time. Em and Junior do the same thing, no matter how terrible their situation. Great great movie.

I love how after Jean Jacket picks up the biker, he flies RIGHT NEXT to OJ trying to bait him to look with the Bikers screams, then once he realizes OJ isn't budging, he just kills the Biker. Its a territorial dispute and Jean Jacket is trying to make himself look big and scary.

Its implied that the director that they eventually convince to get the impossible shot, is actually dying from a terminal illness, which is why he sacrificed himself for the shot.

i personally liked the theory that Jean jacket is just an undiscovered species/animal from this earth that has no clear motive/evil and it’s just doing what it does to survive, eat just like any other animal or apex predator. I guess because of its territorial form(last scene) in this universe ppl have mistaken for angels back in ancient times. idk why this thought makes it more scary and unknown to me

I liked how Jean Jacket formed into a biblical angel type figure; I personally took its new form literally as the result of the barbed wire it ingested and spat back out having ripped up its intestines and insides, hence them all kind of falling out in the end to look like a jellyfish lol

It's so funny, I watched this movie a few days ago and enjoyed it, but not to a huge degree - though I did LOVE the sister (she was so hilarious and a fire ball!) and loved the relationship with her incredibly low-key and smart brother. Sorry, I forget the character names! Anyway, I enjoyed it so much more watching it again with you two. ❤ Also, so great to see Michael Wincott (he was the filmmaker) in a big movie again! Hope he can get more roles now and not just bad guy roles (in his heyday).

The interesting thing I noticed were the forms Jean Jacket took. Obviously one form is the Flying Saucer, another was something similar to a hot air balloon, and the last was an angel near the end.

I really feel like OJ definitely survived because we see OJ as he's distracting JJ so Em could get away, but then JJ starts chasing Em. He never returned to his saucer form (which is how he eats) until he attempts to eat the Kid Sheriff balloon, therefore OJ should still be alive and well.

To her question as why the monkey story is important is because it’s essentially the alien. They both end up dying from balloons. You’re fine if you don’t look it in the eye.
@phousefilms
@phousefilms Жыл бұрын
Also spectacle throughout the movie. The director ignored OJ when he says they should let the horse rest and it kicks the makeup cart. Gordy is used for spectacle and panics when the balloon pops(and since chimps consider anyone looking them in the eye as a challenger, attacked the audience and crew). Jupe tried to make JJ a spectacle for the audience and ended up getting them all killed. And our heroes attempted to make a spectacle of JJ and nearly died(though at the end, they were happier to be alive than that they got the shot).

Jupe was doing it for fame..The Haywood’s were more so doing it for survival in a sense. They had to keep selling horses to stay afloat and not lose the ranch. Both were trying to exploit it but for different reasons.
