@@kellyappel3015Fair share? You don’t have a clue. Nancy Pelosy made so much money off stocks with her insider info, she single handedly beat top 10 investors in the industry by a mile. It would take her 300 years to make that from her salary. If she don’t pay all that back, I don’t want to hear anyone paying their “fair share”. And if congress was serious about balancing the budget, they would mandate that their salary cut to 25% and they cannot be reelected unless they balance the budget, and I’m not talking about reduction on proposed increases. Democrat only spent more when they had full control and it destroyed our economy.

Since taxes are on wages, SS definitely doesn't fit the Black's Law definition of "wages". Wages Black's Law Definition: The compensation agreed upon by a master to be paid to a servant, or any other person hired to do work or business for him. In maritime law. The compensation allowed to seamen for their services on board a vessel during a voyage. In political economy. The reward paid, whether in money or goods, to human exer- tion, considered as a factor in the production of wealth, for its co-operation in the process.

Not always. Sometimes they are accidentally correct. Those people who think that the current administration is going to solve the debt or inflation crisis are employing magical thinking because they are blissfully unaware of how fiscal deficits are caused, and the impact of interest rates on inflation. We have 2 inflationary causes that the current admin is planning to increase - anyone who thinks inflation is going to come down are going to be surprised in the next 4 years as it accelerates. The only solution at this point is significantly higher taxes for SOMEONE, and a more restrictive monetary policy with higher rates. I hate to say it, but Brian is right - even a deep recession couldn't fix this because we have structural deficits and interest expense crowding out all other government spending.

Be real folks. I like taxes being cut but lets not pretend those types of cuts helped the average joe. It was meant for corporations, shareholders and high income individuals. It disproportionately benefited higher-income earners and corporations, while providing more limited benefits to lower-income individuals. Here's why: 1. Reduction in Income Tax Rates The law lowered tax rates for all income brackets, but the biggest percentage reductions occurred in the higher tax brackets. For instance: The top tax rate dropped from 39.6% to 37% for individuals making over $500,000 (single filers) or $600,000 (married couples). Middle-income earners saw reductions from 25%, 28%, and 33% to 22%, 24%, and 32% respectively, but these were less substantial in comparison to the upper brackets. For wealthy individuals, these reductions translated to substantial dollar savings due to their higher incomes, whereas lower-income individuals saw relatively smaller reductions. 2. Corporate Tax Rate Cuts The law slashed the corporate tax rate from 35% to 21%, which disproportionately benefited wealthier individuals who own or invest in large corporations. This cut provided a massive windfall to businesses and shareholders but did little to directly help the working poor. The expectation was that corporations would pass on savings through higher wages or job creation, but studies showed that the majority of corporate tax savings went into stock buybacks and dividends, which primarily benefited wealthy investors rather than employees. 3. Limited Impact on Low-Income Earners: Lower-income individuals saw less of a benefit overall. For example, the standard deduction was doubled, which was a positive for many, but this only resulted in modest savings compared to the benefits enjoyed by the wealthy due to reduced rates on larger incomes. The child tax credit was expanded, but the income thresholds for qualifying were still relatively high, meaning many low-income families received limited or no benefit from this expansion. Additionally, the law capped the State and Local Tax (SALT) deductions at $10,000, which impacted wealthier taxpayers in high-tax states (like California and New York) far more than low-income earners. 4. Long-Term Benefits for Wealthier Americans: The tax cuts for corporations and high-income individuals were permanent, whereas those for individuals were temporary and set to expire in 2025. This means that wealthy individuals will continue to benefit from lower rates for the long haul, while middle and low-income individuals will see their cuts reduced or expire in the future unless Congress acts to extend them. 5. Wealth Inequality In the years following the tax cuts, wealth inequality widened, with the rich benefiting far more than the poor. While some workers did see small wage increases and companies gave occasional bonuses, the overall impact was less pronounced for those in lower income brackets. In summary, while the Trump tax cuts were framed as benefiting all Americans, the benefits were disproportionately skewed toward higher-income individuals and corporations, leaving lower-income earners with smaller gains or in some cases, with little change at all in their financial situation. The wealthiest Americans were able to capture the largest benefits through lower taxes on their income and investment returns, whereas the poor and middle class saw more limited, often temporary, advantages.

Companies take their tax cuts and do stock buy backs and do not raise wages, taxes for average Americans decrease marginally, tariffs increase costs by more than the tax cuts, then all the deported farm workers results in massive increases in food costs. So in the end you take home slightly more money, but then pay even more money at the store...and the rich get richer. Sounds like a loss to me.
@danc2682
@danc2682 16 күн бұрын
Your argument ignores key facts: After the 2017 tax cuts, GDP grew 2.9% in 2018, unemployment hit a 50-year low of 3.5%, and median household income rose by $4,400 (2017-2019). Companies like Walmart raised wages, and labor only accounts for 10% of food costs (USDA), so blaming deportations for price hikes is misleading. The tax cuts clearly benefited the broader economy.
@Atray2
@Atray2 16 күн бұрын
Dude, there aren't people to replace the laborers. Food is going to rot in the fields because people aren't there to pick it. Supply drops drastically, prices rise drastically in response. We're going to get screwed. It has nothing to do with the cost of labor.
@danc2682
@danc2682 16 күн бұрын
@ Inflation is primarily caused by excessive money supply and government spending, as Milton Friedman stated: “Inflation is always and everywhere a monetary phenomenon.” It’s not driven by labor shortages. In the U.S., there are 6.5 million unemployed individuals (BLS, Dec. 2024) who can fill unskilled labor roles if incentivized appropriately. Additionally, advancements in agricultural technology are reducing reliance on manual labor. The agricultural robotics market is projected to reach $5.78 billion by 2030, with innovations like autonomous tractors, robotic harvesters, and AI-driven precision farming boosting efficiency and productivity. Labor accounts for only 10% of food costs (USDA), so even if deportations occur, the impact on food prices would be minimal compared to the broader drivers of inflation. Also, you realize with your “illegal immigrants pick our crops, cheap!” argument, you are literally advocating for slavery.

The problem with that analogy is that the rich kids aren’t dependent on the poor kids to make them rich, but big business is, not to mention big business is often public business which is a large part of retirement accounts for working class citizens. There’s also the fact that the rich pay all of the taxes anyway, did you know almost half of Americans don’t owe a dime in federal income taxes… meanwhile the top quartile of Americans are responsible for 80% of the overall tax burden. Not to mention I think people are better than the government at spending money so I want everyone to pay less in taxes. People should stop simplifying complex problems and complicating simple ones.

I see a lot of people saying that the country needs to reduce spending but I don't think people actually know where our tax dollars are going to. They think a majority of these dollars are going to illegals or Ukraine when the truth is the tax dollars are going into essentials like health care related expenses, govenment contracts like SpaceX, our military, and social security. I saw the common right wing stance of cutting education from our funding to be the answer, but if we cut funding for education not only are we weakening the future of America by making ourselves dumber as a population but we also hurt the people who WANT to succeed in life. FASFA gives out $120B each year in financial aid to poor and middle class kids who go to school to be things like doctors, nurses, engineers, scientists, economists, etc.. The only way to deal with the debt crisis is to raise taxes and lower spending. That is an incredibly unpopular stance that no president will ever take. I believe that President Trump is desperate for a short term win, but in the long run this will be very costly to the country and will inevitability put us in a position to go into a massive depression unlike the world has ever seen before. I am not here to scare people, but I want people to be aware of the oncoming disaster. Be ready for the inevitability, don't be scared, be prepared.

Brian is the GOAT for being the only finance podcaster discussing the Fed buying bonds to lower rates-finally! The Fed should resume MBS purchases-or at least stop runoff-to inject liquidity and allow mortgage-locked homeowners to move to better economic opportunities. High mortgage rates are trapping people in place, limiting job mobility and slowing economic growth. Homeowners with significant equity can afford to wait, creating a bottleneck in the market, while institutional investors stand ready to scoop up distressed properties if rates stay high. If the Fed waits until unemployment rises to ease policy, they’ll punish families and reward cash-heavy investors, accelerating the shift toward a renter economy. The current policy mix of high rates and quantitative tightening is strangling housing market activity, with 1 in 6 accepted offers falling through and stagnation taking hold.

We used to only have income tax to fund the civil war. I think our mindset of "well, we have to have income tax because we spend all of this money all the time" is the issue that needs to be addressed. Your analogy of the person that makes a bunch of money keeps spending and borrowing more is a good one. If that person loses their job, their money source, either the person can keep trying to borrow money or change their mindset of how much they spend. We need to stop thinking in "spending more" and start thinking in "spending less". When we start seeing that we don't have to spend a bunch of money, cutting income tax makes perfect sense. Especially since it was only implemented to fund the civil war originally. I guarantee you that the intention was never to allow it to explode beyond that when the amendment was written.

Here's the thing, we need taxes. The middle class contributes significantly to our tax system. However, the issue arises when corporations and the wealthy exploit loopholes to reduce their tax liabilities, often to levels lower than those of the middle class. Furthermore, we need to reduce spending, whether it be on wars abroad or into the pockets of some politicians, and instead reinvest in our local communities. Together, we can make sure our taxes are invested in our shared prosperity, creating a better life for all citizens.
