The current polling results can have an effect on the amount of voters that turn up. If your party is far down "eh why bother we won't win anyways" same if far ahead but for the opposite reason. Apathy, somehow worse than hate. In a country where we're all logical and virtuous this wouldn't matter. But in reality where the election is a vibes check it might matter.

the idea that pollsters don't want to be the first ones to be wrong, they want to say others misslead them, kind of shows the issue. pollsters should come to their conclusions independantly of what other pollsters think, so there can't be any missleading like that. they are supposed to gather data and analyze the data. they are not supposed to copy eachothers homework.

I think the Overton window has moved. Pre-2016 asking are you going to vote for Trump was like asking are you going to vote for for Hitler. So even people who would vote for him would say no. And post-2016, in some parts of the US, are you going to vote for Trump is like asking are you going to vote for the new incarnation of Jesus Christ. So even people who wont would say yes.
