IIRC, Japan was more afraid of them invading than they were of the US. The real pity is that Putin and other Russians forget the we were all allies once.

As an Australian I actually knew Canada was a part of WW2. I also remember, Americans didn’t want to, because they thought the same way as Fking Nazis. It was only after the Japanese bombed pearl harbour that they joined the war. Amazing to think that Americans used to think the same as Nazis….. Oh did they ever stop? Maybe 🤔 Not.

Veterans of Canada, USA and Great-Britain.. you fought for the freedom of European countries - far too many sacrified their precious lives for our freedom, for my freedom and that of my children, leaving their families at home, mourning. Each year on May 4 (one day before our Liberation Day). we officially honour all those who gave it all, including their last breath..., but may every single one of you and your children and spouses know that we thank you often in our thoughts, especially in times like these when autocrats like Trump and similar European politicians have different opinions about freedom. With gratitude and a huge thankyou!, love from The Netherlands.

I nearly fell over. In all of the nightly news coverage, not a mention of a word of our joining early and voluntarily, including my Uncle who saw it as a moral issue, and in all modesty flew overseas bombing sorties in Avros, looking for U-boats and subs, and piloting the immense amphibious Cansos that took personnel and materiel into the North Atlantic. I was lucky to have learned at his feet, as he managed to tell me so much while keeping it clean, and I had him until 2007. My aunt was a war hostess and they had the war romance of a lifetime. It was only after he passed that I discovered he had medals. I had never seen them, and he got on with the business of raising a family, working and enjoying living on the Ocean in Nova Scotia for many long retirement years.

@@sstills951 you are quite mistaken on that. Please look this up. Canada contributed more soldiers and lost more soldiers per capita than the US. Also Canada declared war immediately after the UK did, after Poland was invaded in 1939. Canada lost over 3,000 in Dieppe in 1942. 3,300 in one battle. Only 2,200 canadian soldiers survived Dieppe to return to the UK. Remember that the Allies did not invade Europe until 1944. Canada liberated The Netherlands and that fact is widely acknowledged to this day. Please get your facts straight on something this important

@@sstills951 Thank you for accepting shiz's comment so well. Yes, Canada signed up right from the get-go. Much as we all know that, without US assistance, defeating the Nazis would have been a big ask, it always infuriates me that so many Yanks think it was they who "won the war." There were five beachheads at Normandy, three of which (Gold, Juno and Sword) were taken mostly by the Brits/Canadians. My British uncle parachuted into Arnhem, was captured and spent the rest of the war as a POW. If you want to learn more, the series World at War is brilliant.
