Biden must clarify that the real economic pain people are feeling is due to 40 years of trickle down Reaganomics B.S. people have been squeezed for so long that whenever there's a shock to the system, people simply have nothing left. They have no buffer, no savings, so this inflation eats into that. However Biden has to clarify that what HE personally has done is to make things better for us in the last 4 years. Inflation has gone down faster than any other advanced economy. Unemployment is at 60 year lows, GDP growth is still good though it's slowing down because the fed is trying to reign in the inflation. We need to keep going, we need to do MORE, and that's what Biden needs to get across.

I 100% agree with you. Part of the problem is that at a certain point Democrats succumbed to Reaganism and then seemed to buy into aspects of it that were extremely harmful to middle and lower class Americans. When you have a Democratic president like Bill Clinton buying into the Republican narrative about poverty without actually addressing the underlying issues that people were actually facing so that he could try to get a few more white suburban voters then you have lost. That’s just one example. The worst part is that the white people who believe those types of messages still voted Republican. So he, like Democrats for way too long, participated in harming constituents who were far more likely to vote for them than trying to make their lives better while reinforcing views of those would never consider voting for them. I don’t know at this point it is possible to change the way the wider public thinks about Republicans and Democrats on topics like the economy. The media has been pushing the message that Republicans are better at handling the economy since the ‘80s even though macroeconomic analysis shows the opposite. People don’t know what any of this means and that’s a sizable part of the problem.

*BINGO.* He needs to adopt some of Bernie Sanders’ & Elizabeth Warren’s ideas & talking points. Talking about things like the severe imbalance of wealth & how it’s turning us into an oligarchy. And addressing issues where successful businesses are keeping their employees reliant on government assistance instead of paying them a living wage. Like how Jeff Bezos is now worth $203 billion & Amazon stock broke it’s all time record in April, while a third of their own employees have had to rely on at least one government assistance program.

@expfcwintergreenv2.02 Obviously, Canada has no ability to resist a US military invasion, so I see your point. However, I don't think the historical analogy quite works. Unlike the Sundeten Germans, the Americans in Canada left the US to get away from US policies and right-wing governments. For example, there are many Vietnam draft dodgers who never went back. Plus, much of Canada's identity is Not-American. Much of that is petty bs, resenting our larger neighbour, but it still means we're not going to welcome becoming part of the US. Perhaps a closer historic analogy would be France, which didn't put up much of a fight against Nazi Germany 's invasion.

@dfuher968
@dfuher968 20 күн бұрын
@@arlenewipfler5475 Yeah, thats the name, Shrinking Trump. I started noticing his beginning dementia back in 2018, and Im just an accountant, who had a greataunt, who had dementia. And he got worse over the years, especially after he lost in 2020. And its exploded in the last year with all the indictments and, u know, actually being held to account for the first time in his life. What ppl need to understand is, that dementia is not like flicking a switch, and thats it. Its intermittent. We often talk about sundowning, coz it often shows late in the day, when the person is getting tried, under stress etc. But Trumps episodes have gotten worse, more often, and also on other times of the day. All of which shows the progression of the dementia. Maybe they get lucky, and he has a good day on debate day. But judging from the few public appearances and rallies thats not a good bet for his campaign. Theyve kept him away from the vast majority of usual campaign events, and hes only sat down for an interview with a real journalist (if u can still call Bret Baier that) once since leaving the WH, and it was a disaster, so much so hes now calling Fox a hostile network. I'll believe, he shows up to the debate, when I see him waddle onto the stage. I still fully expect his campaign to come up with some lame excuse to back out. Theyre already backpeddling and whining about the rules. In my laymans opinion, Trumps dementia has gotten bad enough to A. impair him and B. make him lose, what little impulse control he had, and let us all see his full awfulness. Coz thats part of dementia too, whatever the persons personality was comes out on steroids. But whats more important, psychologists and psychiatrist, including dementia experts, are saying, that its bad and getting worse every day. Trumps campaign already has him on a minimum schedule, its important to get him out there for all to see. Normally, some1 in Trumps state wouldve had a family intervention long ago, and they would move to protect him. His family doesnt care about him, any more than he cares about them. Its all transactional. They see advantage for them in him running for president, so theyre egging it on. And since hes insisted on putting himself out there, hes fair game. And it is imperative not to have this demented person elected to the WH, who was a clear and present danger even b4 the dementia. We've learned later, that Reagan in his last couple of years was pretty impaired, but at least he had ppl around to hold it together. Trump wont have that. We've all seen the ppl around, using him for their own purposes.

Mona and Chris, your poll punditry leaves a fair bit to be desired. Poll methodologies and models have been adjusted to death to account for 2016 underestimation of Trump support, and the last few elections have shown us that the pendulum may have swung too far in the other direction. Further, the NYT polls were replete with foolish assumptions, such as the extremely high percentage of currently unregistered people included in the model.

At some point we might have to dispense with such conventional wisdom.

@@burntorangehorn Look, the cost of living IS inordinately high when compared to 2019. That’s NOT Biden’s fault. He shouldn’t feel defensive when asked about it. It’s the PANDEMIC that gripped the world in 2020. We (both Trump and Biden) poured a shit load of money into the economy to help Americans and small businesses stay afloat while things were shut down. Then we had the supply chain issues as we were coming out of the pandemic. Inflation exploded and it was a worldwide phenomena. While it’s down now in our country (due to the Fed’s tightening of the money supply), the cost of living IS extremely high, particularly when compared to 2019. When asked about that, you simply cannot say the polls are wrong or that the people are wrong for understanding how good the economy is actually doing. Sarah Longwell’s response IS THE CORRECT RESPONSE when asked to compare prices now and then. You should NOT blame polling methodology or the American people for not understanding.

I hadn't realized until recently that Chris Cillizza wrote at least 50 times about Hillary Clinton's emails in the Washington Post. Why he felt the need to do that over and over and over again has me shaking my head and suspecting it helped contribute to Hillary losing in 2016. Thanks Chris. I hope Donald sent you a thank you note.

Mona's point about not wanting the Republicans to run the Senate makes me wonder how Larry would respond to the question "If you are aware of how dangerous the Republican party is currently, why would you risk giving Republicans power in the Senate?" If he answers with his worries about progressive policies, I would question if he clearly understands the country's situation.

I despise all this talk about polls. Who are they calling, people who still have a landline? Most people with cellphones don’t answer calls from people whose number they don’t recognize. I don’t know if anyone has tried to “poll” me since I don’t answer unrecognized numbers. So how are they getting their poll numbers?

Re the polls, perhaps the average Trump voter is more willing to express their enthusiasm for their chosen candidate than the average Biden voter. In the clip shown, Biden makes a reasonable point that a lot of calls have to be made to elicit a single positive response in poll surveys.
@PaulTopping1
@PaulTopping1 21 күн бұрын
Biden said the polls were wrong because they reflected voters' estimate of the US economy while, at the same time, they felt their own financial situation was good. Biden just presented that argument poorly. On the other hand, the voters are wrong. The US economy is good while the poor and lower middle class are hurting. Biden needs to explain all this without stepping on the obvious mines. Never tell voters they are wrong. Instead, tell them what you think. Explain your point of view and hope that they adopt it.

Problem is, hes been trying, and the media wont bring his speeches or arguments, they would rather spend hours following Trumps insanely large motorcade go through town to his latest court appearance. But yeah, Biden is correct, if they would just let him explain it instead of interrupting and then misrepresenting it in their "reporting". He is absolutely correct, that there is a huge disconnect between ppl thinking, their own economy is great, while the countrys economy is awful. And the media isnt helping by constantly harping on bad news, never the good news. And we all know, that half the media are deliberately lying in very bad faith about it, while the rest are doing toxic bothsides-ism and being rating whores.

I can't understand how Trump is ahead in the poles when he hasn't told America any of his plans, how he actually plans to help Americans. Instead all he does is complain about his opponents. Meanwhile, Biden isn't really saying much either. I'm hoping the debates will make them stick to the issues and exactly what they plan to do about it.

Bill Galston is ONE HUNDRED PERCENT right. I have to make choices like what food to buy or not, whether to pay bills on time, etc because so many things have risen in price in the last few years. It's been relatively slow but all at once and it's a real struggle despite working full time. I don't think these struggles get a lot of REAL coverage in the media. They're usually covered from the perspective of presenters, pundits, forecast makers, etc., not from real working poor and working class people. If your household earns $44,000 a year, the daily choices you're making barely leave any resources to make sure you feed your kids, much less pay close attention to politics.

In my experience those making a low income haven't felt much different because they always feel poor, but they also know how to buy groceries cheaply. The people complaining are making 90k and higher. They bought a $1/2 million or more house in the last few years which left them with no wiggle room in their budget... They are still shopping exactly the same as before and are bleeding money. The reality is we have now a generation of people who actually can't afford their mortgages because they got caught up in the real estate boom and decided to gamble but not realize that's what they've done. I don't know how to get to these people other than clobber Trump over the crazy low mortgage rates when it was obvious it was fueling inflation, how terrible Trump handled covid and specifically remind them what a shit show 2020 was. That we couldn't buy chicken, hamburger or freaking toilet paper. They've allllllll rationalized that 2020 either was Biden's fault or Trump handed it great... Not grasping that every President is going to be handed disasters, and Trump was epic in how terrible he handled them... And if he can't handle a disaster he has no business being President.

This election reminds me of 1992 Presidential election. President Bush didn't capitalize from the Persian Gulf War victory when he had 91% approval rating. He had a political mandate but he failed to properly utilize the capital. He didn't take Clinton and Perot seriously. President Bush didn't have any surrogates advocating for him. President Bush didnt campaign until Labor Day and it was too little to late. But this is totally different times with greater access to information with the internet and smart phones. Majority of Americans don't consume their news from traditional outlets. Late night talk shows play a big influence with people who don't normally watch or read the news. I believe in the goodness of the American people and President Biden will be reelected. This idea that Trump doesn't over poll is not correct. The polls gave Trump the lead in Arizona and Wisconsin but President Biden won those states in 2020.

Another good addage is the mic mute so the ramblings of a mad man doesn't bully over the air time. Questions asked is also going to make a difference and they won't be softballs. The first question I would ask is who won the 2020 election.
