Actually, I believe it used to be policy for children whose parents had committed a federal crime after or during their crossing of the border, such as attacking one of the ICE, to be separated from their families, but under Trump it became policy for anyone crossing the border.

@TADionysus no clintons policy made it so that an unaccompanied child traveling across the border would be assigned to a legal guardian or a relative when caught. However, if there were no relatives available, they would be assigned to an adult. Trump made it so that any family crossing the border would be separated automatically. The parents would automatically go to jail and the children would go to the centers.

This is definitely going down as one of the most critical, dangerous, and bizarre times in the history of the US. While a horrifying shock is now simply expected on a daily basis, it is nonetheless utterly depressing and horrifying to all of us with a conscience to find out what Trump’s racist, misogynistic, bullying antics are for the day (Trump du jour? - ugh 😑). Honestly, it’s impossible to get used to stuff like this. I'm fourth generation half Japanese. My grandparents and their entire family were locked up in internment camps. Back then no one spoke out against the breech of civil rights that were afforded to them as Americans. Its nice that so many were against this. It kind of brings back hope that America can be the beacon of ideals it proclaims itself to be to so many in the world. And hope I believe is a good thing.

Warblade Saint The difference here is that Japanese in the internment camps were predominantly American citizens and what happened to them was 100% wrong. These people are not American citizens. They illegally crossed our border to try and get into our country and they are being detained until their cases can be adjudicated. There is a HUGE difference. Why is there such outrage about this? Erroneous Monk We cannot act like we are the symbol of civil rights when we commit acts like these. Civil rights for only one group of people is not civil rights at all. When children ten and younger are sent to "tender age" camps where they are recorded crying for their mothers or any family at all while border patrol officers laugh at their plight then the only feeling I get is that these actions are reprehensible. You wish to make this about politics but the simple fact is this is not about politics. This is about being a human being. About putting yourself into another person's shoes and thinking outside of yourself for one moment. What if your father and mother traveled hundreds of miles away from their home they have lived in for generations to escape a life where more than likely they would be murdered, forced into a gang, or starved. What if when you get to a border seeking asylum you get turned down countless times to the point where it may take years for you to get in. What are you supposed to do? You have uprooted your whole family. You have no money. You have no hope behind you. Where are you supposed to go? Until you yourself have experienced this or spend a single moment to empathise for someone outside of yourself then don't justify these actions. My family experienced this and because of that I can see its wrong. To put it simply if a man is beaten because he likes the color blue does the morality of that beating change if the man instead likes the color red. No it does not. Which is why this will never be acceptable. And seeing as how 70 percent of America agrees I'm gladdened by it. This reassures me that these actions even today are unacceptable. So unacceptable that it forced the presidents hand. If you can take a moment and close your eyes to imagine yourself in a situation like this then hopefully your empathy will grow for others.

They’re not. Their parents don’t give up their kids without a fight or at least being reassured that they’ll be given back in a few hours. They trick them by saying they’ll give them showers and baths but that’s not the case. Over the centuries, many thousands of Native American children were also ripped from their loving families/communities & placed in boarding homes or with Caucasian Christian families in an effort to assimilate them to the Euro-American way of thinking. Indigenous South/Central Americans were first colonized by the Spanish who murdered them by the thousands & also tried to assimilate them to their culture using missions. Than the US basically stole half of Mexico dividing some remaining tribes that had moved freely on either side of the boarder for thousands of years. Now in the era of Trump, indigenous Americans are still being mistreated. When the US backed numerous violent coups in Central & South America, many of the natives in these regions were forced to flee for their lives or face being disappeared or killed. So basically the US created this refugee crisis at the southern boarder, but does nothing to fix the underlying problem. This administration only adds insult to injury.

It's not surprising seeing our history. The US gov't has repeatedly stepped on the Constitution many times in the past (e.g. Japanese Internment camps) and this is for the US citizens. If you're an immigrant that's not from some 1st world European country, the gov't sees you like you're less than human. It's saddening having to learn that the cycle is repeating itself again. The statement "I'm an American!" is rarely used to symbolize pride for the country but it's become an excuse. Even more saddening is that we don't learn from history but omit it when it doesn't shine the US in a good light like the Vietnamese war (especially this) or, again, the internment camps.

The problem here (other than racism) is largely a combination of imperialism & unregulated capitalism as an economic model for a finite planet with limited resources. Being Jewish is irrelevant to the actions of the world bank, IMF, & other financial institutions who use debt as a justification for looting a poor country of its natural resources or overthrowing the governments of those unable to pay off these debts. If all else fails they may look for an excuse to use military force & use corporate media as a loudspeaker for their propaganda/agenda.
