Today I found a friend of mine in the bathroom at work crying. She said her brother is a govt worker and one more missed paycheck and they won't be able to pay their rent. They've spent what little savings they had already. I tried to be understanding and supportive but she was still really upset. She finally confessed. You don't understand, she said, I voted for trump! I was shocked. She didn't strike me as a trump supporter and we don't talk politics at work. She said most of her family voted Republican and they are all feeling awful now. This is maybe the 6th or 7th friend i have encountered that is really regretting voting for trump. His base is unraveling.

The Berlin Wall surrounded West Berlin for 28 years. At it's peak, there were 186 observation towers and 259 dog runs. It was something over 140km (87 miles) long. That's more than 2 observation towers per mile. Even with all the horrifying things the East German government did to prevent escape (including orders to shoot any escapees, and preventing West Germans from recovering wounded and dying people stuck in the middle, 5,000 people escaped. Because walls are so wonderfully effective.

Actually if you take a $1k loan with 8.99% interest, you would be paying back just $1,094.16 with interest compounded daily. So taking out a loan really not that bad, except for the fact that you shouldn't have to do that in the first place. However, the bigger issue is that there is no guarantee that the government is ever going to pay you for the time you've have been off work. (Trump is well known is his field for stiffing workers, so why should this time be any different?)

There seems to be some misunderstanding as to why Ross's advice is absurd. I've seen comments about going further into debt, not having an income, etc. Ross rightly points out that the employees are Federally guarantee back-payments, and thus, in theory, should easily be able to repay any loan they get. BUT that only works when dealing with large sums of money for people with a good credit history. The banks are not going to lend money to many people no matter what because of the problems in getting them to repay the loan. The next problem is that the fees and hassle of getting a loan is significant for such a small amount. Next it takes time to process a loan, especially if 800,000 people all do it at the same time. Next - how much do you take out a loan for. The length of the shutdown is indeterminate. Is Ross suggesting that the workers renegotiate their loan on a fortnightly basis? Also, I really don't think that the banks will be interested in the temporary propping up of 800.000 workers and most would probably baulk at the concept. Finally, if that is the solution then why doesn't the government get a loan and pay the workers that way? Because congress won't allow it because it would be irresponsible. If it's irresponsible for the government to do it, why is it responsible for all the workers to act as proxy for exactly the same thing? Because then the workers, not the government, burden the inherent risk, because despite what Ross is claiming, the risk is not zero. This is why a rich person is not the best person to be put in control of government finance. He is only capable of understanding things from the context of self.

All in all, I think that this shutdown has taught that if you can, it is a good idea to set aside some money for a rainy-day fund in case of situations such as these. I realize that not everyone is able to (and have seen the stats about how many in the US live pay check to pay check), but even $5 here and there will add up over time. At least it gives you a little cushion.
