Europe needs a defense capability that can last 2 to 3 weeks maybe a month, against Russia and China. The reason for this is, the United States would come to Europe aid, however, it will probably take 2 to 3 weeks to a month to get the full logistics and weapons train going to support Europe. I wonder as an American if Europe can last even a month against Russia? As an American, I look at my countries, hollowed out defense industry. We made the grave mistake of deciding for peace time dividends after the follow the Cold War, now our own defense industry is as brittle and weak as ever. The reason for this is consolidation. The United States used to have multiple options for defense vendors to the pentagon. Now we have one or at most three, usually just two. This means that the United States is not able to acquire more than one submarine per year. I have heard that it will take a minimum of 86 submarines to 100 to put the Chinese navy on the bottom. The United States does have issues in defense procurement, we went with the European model, although more muscular still very brittle and weak. Joe Biden signed a Bill trying to increase shell production. The United States needs to have flexible surge capacity in its military industrial complex. We definitely need to get to 86-100 attack submarines, for example. Maybe some of the Ford class aircraft carriers should be canceled in exchange for many more destroyers and missile platforms. My point here is, the United States heck of a long way to go to fix it defense industry. Europe also needs a massive upscaling of its defense industry. The problem is Russia has China in its corner, which is an industrial powerhouse. Do not underestimate Russia back by Chinese dependence industry. Both the European continent and the United States needs to look in the mirror and fix defense yesterday. However, that being said, the United States is also not an a mood to have another war. My fear is that one will be forced upon us by China whether we like it or not. The simple reason is, there’s a line of thinking that the United States will give up Taiwan, the problem with that is, it can very easily lead to a Chinese mistake of pushing much farther due to perceived weakness… Then the world‘s next major war starts. That’s my fear. Thanks for reading, thoughts?

A PM isn’t ever elected by the voters. But (s)elected by the Parliament. As was Sanna too. It isn’t possible to just replace a PM without having a majority in the nation’s Parliament accepting her. And you aren’t the PM of a party! Parties appoint their leaders internally. And among the elected MPs a MP is selected by the majority. And obviously after every election the Parliament selects a new PM. Sometimes also between two elections. As is common in Scandinavia, what is in Europe considered moderate left wing and moderate right wing governments replaces each other quite often, just like in most nations, governments replaces each other. You always leaves office as a PM after an election. Although if the new Parliament selects you to be PM once again, you don’t physically have to leave your physical office. Should we say that every PM after every election is “kicked out”, or that the many right wing PMs who have had to end their government also were “kicked out”, or does that term only apply to Social Democrats? The Finnish President on the other hand is elected directly by the voters. And in Finland right wing Presidents and left wing PMs (or vice verse) is knows for being able to cooperate enad compromise. Although in Finland the President has little power compared to how it is in France or the USA. I would suggest you learn more about how a Parliamentary system works.

Well said about "we don't want to have a world in which big powerful countries decide for small countries!" Sadly that world was in the past and seems that the present is not different. The idea that powerful countries can unilaterally decide the fate of smaller nations is deeply troubling and undermines the principles of sovereignty, self-determination, and international law. This is exactly what makes the war in Ukraine so morally and geopolitically complex. Russia's invasion is, at its core, an attempt to impose its will on a smaller, independent country, disregarding Ukraine's sovereignty and the will of its people. It raises the fundamental question of whether might makes right, or whether nations have the right to chart their own course without being dominated by larger powers.

Europeans (I’m Canadian and we are just as bad or worse) have been freeloading our collective security off the Americans for decades, they have been “politely” asking all of us to pull our weight since pre 911. The USA is absolutely right in what they’re saying this mentality of attack the Americans if they do anything or attack them if they don’t do anything is getting tedious(scapegoating is what it is). Watching Eastern Europeans lecturing Americans on democracy in the middle of an election was just stunning, the equivalent of a kindergarten student telling the teacher the curriculum. Lost allot of respect for Europeans, also realizing they’re becoming a problem again with their “this time we’ll get it right” socialist/collectivist group mentality. None of us has the right to lecture the USA, never in human history has any rising tide floated all boats until Paix Americana and in reality most American intervention can be traced back to are the eco of toxic European colonial exploitation of the “small countries” this European cake eater is pontificating on. The idea that European failed deterrence should be paid in full by the American people is like saying Europeans didn’t want to pay for the ounce of prevention so now they EXPECT! Americans to pay the two ounces of control……and bad mouth them, interfere in their election and now, the guy you slandered got a overwhelming mandate and you have to walk back your childish/irresponsible rhetoric…..it’s like none of you matured past high school, zero ownership. When USSR was split the countries formed many kinds of collaborative unions because that was necessary for their economy, defense and trade. Russia, Belarus and Ukraine also formed such a union and they did not create official borders between them (to avoid sovereignty) ... but USA started to chase Ukraine and organized color revolutions and military coup 2014. The union was an important tool to be safe and enable cultural development without pressures from outside. The will of Ukrainian people has always been peaceful co-operation with Russia (83% of Ukrainians are ethnic Russian Slavic, they / their parents are Russian speaking. False. Finnish economy survived the pandemia way better than most European countries and Finland reached the highest employment rate in decades during her term. The current conservative government is doing way worse, unemployment is rising and tax revenues are falling. They mostly like the position of Superpower, but don't have any idea of what it takes to be a Superpower. Here's a hint, it isn't nukes and aircraft carriers. I mean that helps, yet other countries have the same. Things that have been rock solid for decades are now on shaky ground. When you lose influence, you LOSE. The European Union (EU) and the United States are both economic giants, with comparable GDPs: the U.S. stands at approximately $29.35 trillion, while the EU’s GDP, when adjusted for purchasing power parity (PPP), is roughly $28.04 trillion. Despite this parity in economic output, the EU’s defence spending is disproportionately low compared to that of the U.S. In 2024, the U.S. defence budget is approximately $842 billion, while the combined defence expenditure of EU nations amounts to only about $380 billion. This disparity places a substantial burden on American taxpayers, who find themselves underwriting European security. Former U.S. President Donald Trump was particularly vocal about this dependency, calling out European nations, especially Germany, for their insufficient defence budgets. He argued that Germany’s reliance on Russian energy not only jeopardised its own security but also undermined NATO’s collective defence strategy. By purchasing energy from Russia, Trump claimed that Germany was enriching a nation that posed a direct threat to European stability. Despite his efforts, his warnings were often met with resistance from European leaders, including German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who defended her country’s energy policy. However, the implications of this energy dependence became starkly evident following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which exposed Europe’s vulnerabilities due to its historical ties with Russian energy suppliers. Trump’s administration went beyond mere criticism; he actively sought to compel NATO member states to meet the alliance’s defence spending guideline of 2% of GDP. In 2018, he threatened to reduce U.S. military support for NATO if European countries did not increase their contributions. His approach, perceived by many in Europe as confrontational, nonetheless underscored the urgent need for EU nations to take greater responsibility for their own defence. The underfunding of European militaries highlights the necessity for the EU to bolster its security measures independently rather than relying on American support. In the context of Brexit, the EU has asserted its political presence in the UK by appointing an EU ambassador, an action viewed by some as a demonstration of its political cohesion post-Brexit. This move indicates the EU’s ambition to act as a unified political entity on the international stage, reflecting its commitment to solidarity in foreign affairs. If the EU can function as a cohesive bloc in diplomatic matters, it raises the question: why can’t it do so in matters of defence? Given its considerable economic strength, the EU has the potential to increase its defence spending significantly, thereby reducing its reliance on U.S. taxpayers. However, despite its aspirations to become a global player, the EU’s collective defence policy remains fragmented, constrained by the individual military commitments of its member states. Analysts argue that a unified EU defence strategy would not only enhance European stability but also diminish dependence on American military support. In an increasingly complex global security environment, Europe’s economic power should be matched by a robust, integrated defence capability, ensuring its security without imposing an undue burden on American taxpayers.
@cletusvandamme6262Ай бұрын
EXCELLENT, Sir! I clearly remember the Germans disrespectfully laughing in President Trump's face when he warned of the dangers of Germany signing away their Energy Security to Russia. How foolish and shortsighted! Russia has a history and bad habit of shutting the energy taps to compel compliance with its authoritarian demands. This isn't Rocket Science! "Those who do not learn from the lessons of the Past are doomed to REPEAT them." As usual, DONALD TRUMP WAS RIGHT (yet again). The EU needs to expand its military budget from $250 billion per year to over $1 trillion per year to even approach equity with the US. It is the reason the US should leave NATO. Other NATO countries are abusing the US by failing to commit equal funding. There was a reason for the discrepancy when Europe was rebuilding from WWII. That reason expired over 4 decades ago.
