My first kit was a motorized USS Rudderow from Lindberg. My first Bismark kit was the very, very, very old totally inaccurate Lindbergh kit; also motorized. Back then as kids we new very little about accuracy and details, but we had lots of fun building them.

I'm definitely liking how more and more often these days modern ship kits are able to put out single-piece hulls. Trying to fill seams on some of the older 1/350 kits, like the Dragon Scharnhorst waterline seam, is a right ass, so not having to worry about that at all is going to be quite lovely.

WRT the shell painting, you appear to have coloured the two copper driving bands black, instead of making them bare copper coloured. I would also ballast the cartridge to improve its balance and heft. You should also note that later (in the war) German ammo mainly used steel cartridges as brass was in short supply. Fuzes are made of brass, and generally don’t get painted. WRT to the shell’s colour, it was painted to show what type of shell it was, so that is worth researching. For example, British shells might be golden yellow for HE, black for solid shot or AP, pale blue for practice, etc., and it would have the type stencilled on too. Modern combat shells might be NATO green, but with coloured bands to show the contents. Sometimes they might have several different bands for composite construction.

Hi Andy, nice to see a kit of a 88mm shell as the real deactivated ones (propellant, explosives, fuse and primer removed) are expensive - I have recently seen advertised for sale, by a dealer of a rare 88mm Flak 41 shell and casing with most of its original paint and stencils for £1,200 ($1,480). I would be interested to see if you could show modellers how to add extra weight (probably by gluing something solid inside the bottom of the cartridge casing) to give it a more authentic 'feel'. For information there is a paperback book you can buy on Amazon called ' HANDBOOK OF ENEMY AMMUNITION: War Office pamphlet No.15; German Ammunition, markings and Nomenclature. It's a reprint of a 64 page document originally written in 1945. Another point of interest, is that I have seen a picture of a post-war 88mm shell with an additional stamp of a lion on the casing (this was a symbol used by the Czech military) I don't no any details, but it appears that some of the Warsaw pact countries might have used captured 88's post war.

When I saw the start of this I thought Wow! that Andy has been working-out he picked up that 88 shell like it was air, it used to take two German soldiers to load them into a tank! The Bismarck model looks fantastic I remember making an Airfix one as a kid, 1:700 scale I think, it would be great to make the much more detailed one. Funny how the Nazi insignia seems to be taboo everywhere after all of these years, I know Airfix didn't include it and it came as a bit of a shock to see old photo's of the real ship as a youngster with it clearly painted on the decks. I hope they make a 1:350 model of HMS King George V being the RN battleship that finally silenced Bismarck - all seems such a huge tragedy now though.

I find it a funny that the old Monogram Bismarck kit also had the lower pert of the bow as a sperate piece. To this day i have no idea why much less on this new kit . The only thing i have thought over the years is if the Tripitz had a different bow shape. Lol
@73north
@73north 4 жыл бұрын
probably as the bulbous lower bow would be more accurate and easier to mould and then produce in injected plastic - even with slide moulding - as a 2 part insert . Hasegawa did this technique with a insert a lot to produced a different variant - and cut down costs and expensive metal moulds .

You used to be able to get a kit to turn a Ruger 10-22 into an MG-34. There was a bipod scaled to fit it and it fired regular 22LR bullets and didn't require any special paperwork to own one. You may still be able to find one but I can't remember where I saw it.

@DavidSmith-ss1cg
@DavidSmith-ss1cg 4 жыл бұрын
The shell would be 22 1/2 lbs. 10 Kilos. That's kinda heavy to keep on one of those glass countertops. The Germans anti-tank guns used large propellant charges to squeeze a shell out of a tapered bore, giving it tremendously high energy and velocity. It was designed to loft a timed fuse shell to 5 or 6 miles in the air where the Allied bombers were, and proved wonderfully capable of going through tank armor. 22 pounds on the counter top, where a careless customer could knock it over, and smash into the counter - which looks like it's made of glass - or else land on them(lawsuit time). I think that Andy mentioned that it was cool BECAUSE it was light in weight.

Damn, that 88 shell looks so tempting but price seems really steep if you think about what you get. Few plastic parts, most important parts are empty so no weight to them, big ass seam to fill in, in a 4 part 80 dollar kit, and a piece of paper that you have to cut yourself for easier use. Great idea but bad execution.
