I’m an RX owner, and have insisted my beloved daughters drive RX’s. As safe and efficient as they are, you brought to our(and their attention) that as magnificent as they are, listen. As a reactor operator, sound profile is everything. My beloved firstborn survived a high speed t-bone(red light runner) and was in awe at the tow yard that it was perfectly intact inside where she was. Plus, college trips, camping, and miles for any reason. I stress to her maintenance, a knowledgeable mechanic, and…sounds. Just listen. Thank you for being both sharp and honest. I’m a mechanical design engineer (agricultural sprayers) and I try my best to keep future service in mind, I.e. hardware access, common hardware size if possible, etc. This is because I’ve been quite frustrated doing repairs on my own vehicles and having a relatively simple repair take forever due to complications such as you’ve shown here. Complications due to two reasons which follow. First, modern automobiles are designed for ease of assembly. This is to ensure the shortest possible assembly time per vehicle per day to keep the man hours per vehicle as low as possible. Obviously this is to maximize the margin on each vehicle. Not to keep the cost to the consumer lower. Second, the power train engineering teams are independent from the chassis engineering team. The power train engineers are typically not involved in packaging the engine into the chassis. Therefore serviceability is not a priority. Making the engine and all ancillary components fit in the engine bay is. Pretty shitty in my mind. My thought has always been that for each new car design, once the first preproduction unit is built, the automakers should invite mechanics and require the lead engineers to work with them to identify serviceability issues and ways to improve them.

Had a scraping noise when driving. Thought it was my friend's doing, as I just let him drove the car 1 day earlier. He does NOT dodge potholes at all, & this isn't the first time he borrowed my car, so I'm used to hearing noise after he borrows my car. So I just ignored it for 2-3 days. Luckily, my 5k oil change interval was due, so I went to my trusty mechanic. He spotted the low brake pads, hence the noise. Moral of story -- always investigate the noise. Don't ignore it.

I replaced the waterpump on our 05 Avalon XL. I did it the same as you where I removed the dogbone top mount but also the bottom engine mount center nut, lifted the engine a little to gain some clearance. I changed the waterpump on my 2009 Avensis 2ZR-FAE 1.8, back in 2020 (UK). I noticed the noise nearly a year before but it was barely audible. I noticed it, but strangely my mechanic friends didn't. The coolant only dropped a little but it took months. I did thectest by removing the drive belt and briefly ran the engine. No noise. The pump pulley didn't feel rough. I replaced the water pump myself along with new drive belt and longlife Toyota coolant. Such an easy and rewarding job. Engine back to being quiet. Some cars even with small engines, a water pump replacement can be a major task!

February, four years ago, I bought a 2008 ES 350 with only 100,000 miles. I thought I heard water pump, then my heater stopped putting out hot air. I knew what that meant. Good thing it was winter. Water pump and a thermostat that was almost as big as the water pump. About a thousand. A few weeks later, both front axles, pads and rotors, and a new battery. I was surprised that it used the 24F size that was originally made for the first models of 12 volt Ford trucks. The car and the repairs were mostly paid for by the $600 per week covid unemployment checks. 24000 miles later, still going strong!

But this was a good video showing what we DIYers all encounter when tackling a project; tight spaces, uncooperative bolts, etc., etc. But it was also helpful in showing how the serpentine belt can be replaced, and how easy it is to check the water pump, and the tensioner and idler pulleys while the belt is off. Plan on replacing the serp belt on wife's 2GR Venza later this summer when temps cool down a bit. Replaced the rubber oil cooler pipe assembly with the all-steel one last year after watching your video. Had to support the engine and lower the subframe a bit to do it. Haven't found it yet, but at least have a method to check. Also up is the water pump. Found the reservoir empty last fall & refilled it. Crawling under found a dried streak in the area of the weep hole. For instance I have a 2020 4Runner that the lane departure alert, pre collision alert and now the cruise control system comes on all showing “malfunction” and bring to the dealer. Is it the radar component or the camera component or the cruise control module or a sensor or something else like a software issue? This is the second time bringing it in for the same issue. Truck has never been in an accident. Has 20,000 miles and I take very good care of my vehicles. I’m awaiting the dealer diagnosis and what the vehicle needed to fix it.
