you should vacuum the matten filter during a water change to remove a lot of the detritus. You can siphon with a gravity feed or have a pump pull it out

It looks to me that your sponge ppi is on the lower side. A lower ppi means larger pores which allows more flow, both into and out of the sponge. A higher ppi sponge will hold onto the detritus better so you'll have less (but still occurs) leakage back into the water. The downside to a higher ppi is less time between saturation of the sponge, so more frequent cleaning is required. You are going to end up with the detritus entering back into the water either way. Comes done to how often cleaning is best for your setup. I prefer 30 to 35 ppi. 20 allows too much leakage during cleaning IMO. On the tank divider issue. Why not just have either a plastic divider, or a 2nd sponge in place before removing the sponge that needs cleaning.

Matten filter are meant for smaller tanks, shrimps, fry. And with 20-30 ppi sponge its not meant to clean it for like 1-2 years. Maybe even more. Anyway, thx for sharing your experience!

I've never bothered to try and catch the run-out water from any kind of sponge filter when removing it from the tanks. It's always during a water change, and like you said, once the filter is back in it will clear it up pretty quickly anyway. ✌️

It seems like this is being maintenanced far too soon. You should be able to go a few years between cleanings, and by that point it makes sense to scoop everything out and drain the tank first. Go for a 20ppi pore size, forget about mechanical filtration; this is for biological... and let it go for years and years.

Tipe filtrasi ini bagus. Tetapi .... Saat ditetapkan di dalam tank dengan ikan yang berenang dengan cepat dan menimbulkan kibasan air yang besar, maka debris yang tertahan di matten, akan berhamburan lagi. Butterfly Koi. Contohnya

Running matten filters on my neocaridina shrimp rack going on 21 months with out being cleaned lol

Exactly! These filters are *awesome* if you're comfortable with natural processes. If you tend to be more obsessive about the appearance of cleanliness, and wanting to keep your sponge filters looking clean, these are not a good match for that personality type.

Its not the matten filters but your system of removing them.

Have you tried using a bar of soap to polish your glasses and camera lens. If done right they won't fog up

I reckon matten filters are absolutely fantastic for shrimp tanks, maybe some fry tanks but thats about it. Only because fry tanks will be packed up at some point and could just never clean them in shrimp tanks

Dude.. HMF filters are better suited for shrimp/planted tanks. I've had a HMF corner filter for over 6 yrs. And I have only needed to clean it once. Using a HMF for ciklids is just plain stupid 😂😂

I have a corner one in my 4ft community tank, works great. Much less running costs and maintenence and the shrimp clean it for me. Plants can also grow on it.

This video simply tells me you don't know how to use a matten filter, you never remove a matten filter once you put it in. You vacuum the front surface of the matten filter if you must, while doing your water change, what you are trying to do is grow a living community within the sponge itself that eat the detritus. It also provides food for baby fish born in the tank. You are literally causing your own problem that you complain about, stop cleaning it, it isn't a sponge filter it is a biological filter, leave it alone and let your biologics develop and you won't need to clean the sponge wall. So many aquarists kill their tanks by trying to keep them spotless, ever see where fish live, it isn't spotless.
