TRUTH ABOUT THE RANGE OF THE CE DJI AVATA 2 AND SOMETHING CLEVER!

Theres been a lot of talk about the DJI Avata 2 and it's ability to have great range and penetration without the need for a modification. The fact is it's still unclear whether the ham_cfg_support mod which improved the range of the previous version of the Avata actually has any effect.
I investigate my Avata 2 which does actually have the ham_cfg_support file on the goggles SD card and compare it with my Avata 1. Also it seems the Avata 2 has some tricks up its sleeve which might mean we dont even need a mod after all!

Why don‘t you just measure the Max Speed? In CE- mode you get Max 68 km/h. In FCC nearly 100 km/h

I do enjoy your tests😊 Occusync 4 has been out for a while as you know on the air 3 and mini 4 Pro and now the avatar 2. This has given us in CE areas the addition and advantage of 5.2Ghz (less busy frequency) allowing us the permitted maximum 200 milliwatts ! Massive advantage compared to the 25 milliwatts in 5.8Ghz (very busy frequency). With the better antenna technology and increased power output on 5.2Ghz resulting in FCC like connectivity.

This drone does not use occusync 4 because it has terrible latency compared to what is needed for an fvp drone. It's an entirely different technology called o4 video transmission

Andy great video as usual! Please test your top speed in manual now that you have the latest firmware and the FCC is no longer running (it seems) and either do a video on the results or at least pin a comment as a lot of people are interested if FCC actually removes the speed limit in EU or if your drone did not have the limit in the first place.

So as a summary for the UK does it have better signal then the Avata 1 ie not go behind a tree or bush near you and lose all signal? And does it have the bank issue when if you turned too hard it would flip out and crash? Thanks alot pal.

I have a dense forest behind my home. Would it be OK if I flew above the trees then drop back down to ground level beyond the trees? Trees are 80ft tall, distance I would have to travel above the tree line approximately 1/4 mile. forest very thick, I cant see beyond the 1st row of trees. Basically, fly up to 100ft then east for 1/4 mile, then drop back down to ground level then fly around. I would think that the interference from the trees would be about half as much as a tall building? I dont want my new drone to fall while flying above them trees, it would probably never reach the ground and i would not know how to find it. Anyway, love your channel and will sub.

Andy have you ever thought about attaching a hellcat 32 to the bottom of a drone and flying it up to increase the range of your meshtastic network? It could be used to find the height when installing node. Just curious if it would work. Your thoughts. KE8UHD SHAWN

Hi Andy, great seeing you comparing the two Avata's. If I understand well, the RC FPV 3 works only at 2.4 GHz, not 5.8 GHz, unlike the previous generation. Is this a limitation? I'm subbing. Greetings from Montreal, Canada.

Andy great couple of Videos. From what I know you did probably have FCC mode but with the last updates the Hack was removed. Would be interesting if you still get 60Mp/h now after. In regards to the performance improvements in CE mode you will still get improvements over the Occusync 3 used in the Avata 1. Avata 2 uses 4 x Mimo to begin with this gives it a improvement over the Googles 2 and Integra which uses 2x Mimo. What I dont understand is the 2 antennas at the front of the googles in all 3 of the google versions. This is in a cross format, this is obvious DJI trying to implement Cross-polarised antenna gain but I believe via Madstech that these are Rx (Receive Only). If this is the case I do not understand what rf performance improvements this gives as when implementing this you need to do this in Uplink and Downlink paths. Do 4 x Mimo will give you 3dB is rf gain (50% improvement). Also using the 60 Mhz channel this will also give you a rf gain as Shannons law comes into effect vs the 40Mhz carrier matbe 1-2 dB of gain. If the x-plolar Atennas ar Tx/Rx that will be another 3dB of gain. Overall 5 dB of gain from the Googles2 and the Integra. Apparently there is another hack to get FCC back, again mentioned in MadTech video. FYI the drone for the Avata 2 has 4 antennas and the Avata 1 has 2 antennas again a massive jump from 2x Mimo to 4x Mimo.

FYI EU rules state that speed should not exceed 19m/s (42.5Mph) this is stated on DJI tech specs for the Avata 2

Thanks for your insight. I haven't updated again since the speed test I did in the last video. But the speed test was done after the first update. Apparently the lower top speed doesn't apply to the UK as we are not part of EASA. I think you are bang on about the increased MIMO array this drone uses being responsible for the impressive signal strength. Also I think the usage of 3 bands, particularly 5.1Ghz at 200mW and 2.4Ghz at 100mW are helping pentratation hee as well.

@@gravur-art Unfortunately still bound by those laws I'm afraid via OFCOM/CAA we still come under CE region rules. I know Andy uses the Ham radio excuse to change the power, but that maybe not quite hold out in a court of law if police stop you and check to see if you are using FCC hack. Tbh I don't understand why 200 mw is the limit, I have a feeling this is a spill over from phones being limited to 200mw from 3G devices onwards. 2G devices used 1W but a study was conducted in the early 2000's and it was seen that devices didn't go above 200mw.

U have to remember there is something like 6 antenna in the goggles 2 antennas on the drone the remote link to the goggles then goggles to drone or something like that

Yes we beleive the ham_cfg_support file on the SD card probably did nothing so it's fair to assume the drone is just in CE spec.

yeah O3 and O4 are just LTE with all the auth stuff taken out. they use SDR transmitters in it.

My guess is the RF power and frequency is constantly changing acording to distance and conditions. Rather like Crossfire does....25mw on 5.8g wont get you far at all....🤔😀🇬🇧

Correct. Then it switches to 5.2ghz @ 200mW with MIMO, the range seems comparable to FCC mode. Crazy.

Yep typical is 2.5KM and the best I saw was 4.5KM in CE mode before it auto RTH.

@@changeagent228 No self respecting FPV pilot would limit themselves to 25mw on the 5.8g band, useless...It's been a 25mw limit for as long as I can remember, and I'm old...Nobody takes any notice of it either, in fact it would be irresponsible to limit your video link to 25mw. Especially on analogue. DJI Drones I believe operate on 2.4g when you start pushing the range. All well and good provided your well clear of high output WiFi routers..🤔

Agreed! I was flying mine in CE thinking bloody hell this is giving some serious signal penetration. I know this because of when I flew it in my local spot. I know it so well and which trees etc normally cause the beef!

@@Brandon-jf9cv It’s basically a regulation of signal output, therefore reducing range and signal penetration. The UK and EU has CE, along with various other continents or countries I believe.. and the US has FCC, which is a higher power output. However, if you’re not in the US either, I wouldn’t be put off it, because as Andy describes, this thing is extremely clever and uses an extra frequency too. I was flying it thinking it was like FCC mode, but I had not installed that. Plus, the goggles have plenty of antennas on them. I think the drone has 2 extra VS the Avata1 as well but don’t quote me on that.

@andy Kirby a good comparison would be the Avata 1 in CE mode vs the Avata 2 in ce mode as DJI state the Av1 is 2km under ce whilst the av2 is 10lm

Well the hack is here now and it increases the output power upto 64 times. (from 25mW to 1.6 Watt on 5.8 GHz)

@@sweetmosquite Go into Notepad++ Make a new file. Leave it empty but call it ham_cfg_support, In file types choose: all types, save it to your desktop. Now put that file in the root directory of the SD card in your goggles. Then power up Goggles first, then controller and then the drone. There's no way to see if it worked in the menu's but you should notice a big improvement in reception. Try flying in a spot where you normaly almost loose connection and fly there again with the hack installed. You'll notice it working.
